Curtis’ Day

Curtis got to work around 09:00 and today was the start of the Hackathon.

For the hackathon, Curtis’ team is making an application which links to another application that the company uses, which will help everyone find people that can do a certain job within the company.

Curtis is very passionate about this idea and luckily his team was able to find a great developer that can develop it!

Most of the day was spent having meetings and making decisions around the application.

There were a few things to help with regarding other people’s ideas, as they needed some permissions for things.

Curtis did a bit of configuration work at the end of the day for the new helpdesk software, and then waited for Kim to arrive at his work.

Kim’s Day

Kim started her day with having to call FedEx, this is never a fun task and this call was in regards to something being held at customs.

This isn’t something Kim has dealt with before so she called twice and spent while with them trying to figure it out.

Then, Kim stepped away from her desk before she was able to send the information to sort it and when she returned she had recieved an email saying the laptop had been released from customs. That means that it was all a waste of time!

Kim then sent out a few letters and headed out to the post box. On her way back she checked the mail box and distributed the mail.

After her lunch Kim had a meeting with her two colleagues to go over the Wiki project.

They went over how to format and the set up for storing information so it was a really productive and useful meeting, especially given that Kim hasn’t given this project much of a second thought for the past few months.

Kim spent the rest of her afternoon closing of mini items before she goes on leave for the rest of the week.

Kim ordered pizza, orgnaised the plates and napkins for that and made reminders for other things and cleaned up the reception area.

Aurora Winter Festival

After work, Kim met Curtis at his work and then we went, along with two people from Curtis’ work, to the Aurora Winter Festival.

This festival was at the PNE Amphitheatre, so we had to take a bus to get to it.

It was raining and had been all day, so it didn’t give us much hope for good weather! We caught the 95 bus for 30 minutes until we got to PNE.

We had already bought tickets and so got those scanned and entered the park.

It was a little disappointing right off the bat as it wasn’t busy at all, so the atmosphere wasn’t great.

We had to buy tickets to go on any rides, so Kim bought two tickets to go on a tube slide!

After this, we walked around and looked at the market stalls, but they weren’t too interesting.

It was also still raining and cold, so that didn’t assist us.

We went for a walk around a short trail which had gingerbread houses on.

There was then a craft tent which we went in and we all made baubles!

Kim had to concentrate, so here is her concentration face.

We left here and did another walk, which took us through the forest and to a few different light displays.

We got hungry after this, so we went to look at the food trucks.

We both decided on noodles, so Kim got chicken teriyaki and Curtis got pad thai.

Neither of the meals were great, but it was food!

We were all pretty tired and fed up by this point, so we went our separate ways.

To get back home, we had to car the 95 bus back to the city and then take the Canada line home.

Hot tub!

We got back and Kim went in the hot tub to warm up, whilst Curtis went for a long, hot, shower.

We watched some TV, had a hot chocolate and relaxed.

Kim doesn’t have work tomorrow and Curtis is working half of the day so we can travel to Victoria to spend the weekend!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis got to work and was pretty busy from the offset.

He didn’t have too much planned, but new tickets that came in filled the gap.

Curtis was meant to have a training session at 11:00 but this got cancelled so he had a bit more time to do things.

At 11:30, Curtis went for lunch with some people from the office. This happens each Friday, but Curtis usually doesn’t go, but fancied it today!

They went to Tap & Barrel for some food.

Curtis got a raspberry beer which was really good, as well as a southern fried chicken burger and fries.

Whilst eating, there was a big yoga session going on due to the Seawheeze event. This is a marathon organised by lululemon and they had a pre-marathon event in and around the convention centre.

Curtis got back to work and got back to trying to get the virtual machine sorted from the last week or so.

Curtis was able to move forward with it a bit, which was good, but it still isn’t complete!

Curtis had to walk home pretty quick so he was at the bus stop at the right time.

Kim’s Day

Kim had a long meeting that took up most of her morning, so she set up some snacks in the meeting room before everyone else went in. She also went through her emails and made sure that everything was sorted.

The meeting was for the wiki project that Kim has been working on for the past few months. There was an external consultant who was advising, this was great for support and guidance. There was a good outline of what content will be under the HR side of the site and what will be under the Facilities side. This is great becauae it means that Kim and the other lady in facilities can start making progress on their parts with a bit more confidence and certainty.

Kim then had half an hour between this meeting and her lunch meeting with Marriott so she sorted a few emails and went on a search for the coffee urn she used yesterday.

Kim and her colleague then went to the restaurant to meet the gentleman. They then had a great chat and he explained his role and how everything works. Kim ordered the chicken and waffles and they were wonderful! Everyone had a good catch up and ate. Then they ordered dessert so Kim had a tiramisu and it was delicious!

After the meeting and lunch Kim went and got the drinks for the Friday afternoon drinks and then set them all up in the fridge to cool. She then went across to the post office to send the letter she tried to send via FedEx the day before.

When Kim got back to the office she cleared out both fridges and freezers. It was so good to get rid of all the mostly empty takeaway containers and free up loads of space in the kitchen!

The final thing for Kim to do today was to set up for the afternoon drinks. Kim put out the snacks and the drinks and then left them to it as she was leaving at 4 today because she was in so early the day before.

Kim walked home, packed the bag for herself and Curtis. Then on the way to the bus stop she grabbed some sandwiches for the boat ride over to Victoria and waited for Curtis at the bus stop.

Weekend Away

We met at the bus stop and actually got there very early and waiting for around 30 minutes.

We got on the bus and then had a 45 minute ride to the ferry terminal.

Once we got on the ferry, we went straight to the coffee shop and Curtis got a coffee whilst Kim got a hot chocolate.

We sat and watched some Wipe Out on TV for the 95 minute journey.

Once we got off the ferry, it was another bus ride to the city centre.

We got into Victoria and walked up to Linda’s apartment!

We are here to celebrate Linda’s birthday (which is next week). We are only here until Sunday afternoon, but it should be a good fun weekend.

We relaxed for the remainder of the evening and caught up with Linda. We went to bed early as we need to be up for breakfast tomorrow morning!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis didn’t sleep well at all last night, but he was up and ready for work this morning.

Once Curtis got to work, it was full on from there.

There were a lot of tickets, so he was doing those, but he also had to configure some Macs and took a delivery of some new Windows laptops, too.

Curtis got to do a wide variety of things today, which kept it fresh and before he knew it, it was 16:45!

Curtis left and went to meet Kim at SportChek as he needed to get some hockey socks.

Kim’s Day

Kim spent the day in a state of confusion. It was so hot during the night and it seems like no one in Vancouver slept well. People even told Kim it looked like she hadn’t slept well, that’s when you know you’re looking off!

She started the day by booking the day excursion for the people on the east coast. Then went the fruit arrived Kim organised it all and put it all away.

As there is another visitor coming towards the end of the month, Kim arranged their flights and hotel and sent that back across to HR. Kim then realised that the form they are currently using didn’t ask for all the information needed to make the booking. So Kim drew uo a new one and sent it to HR for approval and they loved it so that was a massive win for the day!

Kim then treated herself to pop out to the post box to post stuff and grabbed a doughnut on the way back. Because they are delicious.

Kim then started her afternoon by doing some more work for her project. She set up some questions she needs a little help with, a meeting with her colleuege to go over things that still need to be done and actually did some formatting and making of pages which was great!

As two more people will be attending the first aid course in a couple of weeks Kim had previously arranged a meering for the afternoon to answer any questions they may. Its also a good time to go through the first aid cupboard and ensure we are fully stocked. Kim rearranged this meeting until next week to allow for people to start their reading and for Kim to have some time to organise a few more things.

Hockey Socks & Evening Swim

We stopped in at SportChek as Curtis needed some hockey socks due to his new team jerseys and socks being delayed so he has to get some temporarily.

Once we got that, and had a bit of a walk around, we walked home.

When we arrived home, we were hungry so we started on dinner.

We noticed that we had recieved a letter which was meant to go next door, so we took it there, to our landlord, and had a chat with him.

We got back and finished dinner, having a similar meal as yesterday but with rice.

We relaxed for an hour or so and then Kim went for a quick swim, before she got hiccups and decided it was a bit too dangerous to swim in that condition!

Once Kim got back, we watched some Vikings and then had a fairly early night, with hopes we might actually sleep tonight.
