Place 72 – Day 996: Vancouver, BC – We Had Rain!

Curtis’s Day

Curtis had an onboard orientation at 09:00 this morning. After that, he had some other work to do and then went right into back-to-back meetings.

The two meetings were both with his team and they were super helpful! They garnered some discussion and he then managed to book another meeting for the afternoon to have further discussion about something related to the office.

We had some rain today! Curtis looked out the window in the morning and thought it would rain and luckily it did! We hope that improves the situation with the forest fires here.

The afternoon for Curtis was setting up accounts for a new hire, doing tickets and having the meeting he scheduled earlier in the day.

He got a bit of Norwegian homework done in the afternoon, too.

Kim’s Day

Kim had an interview heavy morning! She started her morning with an interview, went to FedEx and then had two more and the reviews too! It was a great start to the week.

In the afternoon Kim started with a meeting with finance before having a recruitment meeting to align on all the open roles! She then joined a team meeting that ran over and finished the day with a quick catch up with one of the recruiters from the consultancy firm!

Evening

Kim went off to pole and Curtis played games until she got back.

Once Kim was back, we had a chicken caesar salad for dinner.

We didn’t do much for the rest of the evening, just watched a bit of TV and relaxed.

Place 72 – Day 407: Vancouver, BC – Fresh Tomato Pasta

Curtis’ Day

Curtis thought the issue from yesterday with email was resolved, but it turned out it was not! Curtis spent a lot of the morning figuring out the new issue that arose from it and it seems that it is now fixed!

Curtis did some asset management and figured out if they need to order anything more for the office.

Curtis did a good amount of reading today for his Business Analyst training, which was interesting and he really needed to get that done.

Once Curtis finished lunch, he had a meeting to create a flow chart for a project and figure out what the flow will be.

After Curtis had this meeting, he emailed a new hire to find out a few things before they start, so he can get their equipment ready for them next week.

Kim’s Day

Kim did the same thing during the day, had a slow morning and then applied for jobs.

Later in the afternoon Kim made a pre pole snack and watched some TV before heading out to the shop to get tomatoes. When she got back she had a call with her friend from her old job and they had a great catch-up while Kim prepped dinner. It was so nice to talk to her and laugh, Kim missed seeing her everyday!

After the chat Kim got ready and went to head to pole, obviously the elevators weren’t working so Kim walked down the stairs and down to the car via the car ramp. She was then a little late to pole but joined at the end of the warm up.

Both of the classes were great! Kim was in a much better head space this week and so she was able to concentrate a bit better and enjoy the class more. In the first class they did one of Kims favourite move called an extended butterfly and they went over aerial inverts, which was great because since leaving the UK and losing some of the skill she had Kim had been struggling with that. The class today really helped and things seemed way easier now! In the second class they learnt the last bit of the combo from the week before, Kim wasn’t great at it, but then they tried a new move and a flip from that move. Kim loved this she got the move on the first try and tried the flip with assistance. It was so much fun and Kim really enjoyed it!

Fresh Tomato Pasta

When Kim got home, she added some mushrooms and onion cooked in balsamic and red wine to the sauce and we had that with pasta…It was delicious!

We watched some TV for the remainder of the evening.

Place 72 – Day 390: Vancouver, BC – The Megadesk Lives!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis did some tickets and then at 10:00 he had a 1 hour long Norwegian lesson! He had a really good time doing that and again, as like last time, it was a full Norwegian conversation which was excellent.

After this, there were a lot of tickets for Curtis to do and then after lunch he walked to the office.

Whilst at the office, Curtis noticed a server had an error on it! Luckily, it’s not fatal, but some parts need to be fixed or replaced.

Curtis got a new monitor from the stock room and got that ready for someone to pickup, which is why he was at the office.

The person collected the monitor and Curtis went back home again, but with a stop at a Starbucks to meet with Kim briefly and to get a coffee.

Curtis did a bit of admin when he got home and then was done for the day.

Kim’s Day

Kim spent the morning labelling peoples desks that she will clear out. For some she was able to use their instructions over messenger to find their desk and for others Kim had to call them and be directed.

She also took some time to draft up some emails she will send out over the coming weeks as had a brainwave of communication that she wants to say. So she quickly wrote it all down while she could remember!

In the afternoon Kim moved all the monitors from the desks where they were being stored and moved them to another area in the office so she could work on setting up the first couple of mega desks.

About halfway through reorganising the furniture Kim went and met the vendor for the plants to let her into the office and Kim took a little break a while in to go and meet Curtis for a coffee.

Once Kim had removed all the furniture she started measuring out the distance between the banks of desks and also put a few of the drawers that are not being used under the desk for storage. Kim then emptied a few of the desks and stored those items under the new desk.

Once Kim finished the desks she worked on emptying other people’s desks. She cleared the tables, put everything into their drawers, labelled the items and tagged the table so she knew it had been done. It was a very successful day and Kim is happy with how quickly the desks come together when the spaces is empty.

Evening

When Kim got home, we took out the recycling and we then had some homemade tomato and mushroom pasta!

We watched some TV and played some games, but not much as it was almost 21:00 by the time we finished eating.

Place 72 – Day 369: Vancouver, BC – Early Morning Cocktail Class & Virtual Summer Party!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis did some tickets and answered some questions in the morning.

After this, Curtis and a couple of different project meetings and then had some lunch.

Post lunch, Curtis completed a contractor onboard which was pretty easy and fast and then he did some more tickets, some admin and answered some more questions regarding contractor onboarding.

Kim’s Day

Today Kim helped host the first virtual summer party, for the UK folks. So as it is held in UK time, Kim was up and in the office by 6! She finished setting up the last few things for the Zoom call by getting extention cables and getting all the aspects ready for the cocktail masterclass.

Once her colleague arrived they popped out to to Tim Hortons pick up some breakfast. Kim had a cheese and egg muffin and they ate while the did the audio and visual tests.

Then it was time to go! They started with a couple of introductions and then went straight into the cocktail class. It was so much fun, Kim made a long island iced tea and showed everyone the steps on how to make it and her colleague did the same for a pina colada. After this they went into the pub quiz. There were four rounds, two rounds had general questions about the past two decades and the other two rounds were about the people and the company. All the rounds went so well and people had a great time.

After the party was officially ‘over’ some people still stayed on the call to hang out. So Kim and her colleague hosted a couple of jackbox games which were amazing.

Once the event finished Kim and her colleague had a catch-up to see how well things went. We had a couple of people reach out and say they enjoyed it, so that makes all the work totally worth it!

Kim spent a little time working on her expenses before she had a team meeting with her manager and colleague to go over the event. It was a great meeting with some good feedback, easy changes to implement for the next two!

After this meeting Kim made a few notes and a game plan for the next few days before heading out and catching up with a couple of people. The colleague who left a few weeks ago is flying home this weekend so it made sense to have one final meet up and another colleague joined too! When they met Kim was suddenly hungry, so they went and got a taco from Tacofino and enjoyed that on the enclosed patio thing, as distanced as possible. Then after that they all went and got some cheese tarts and they were amazing! The colleague still at the company will be joining the summer party next week, but didn’t want to make cocktails so they went to pick something up for her to make instead. After that Kim said goodbye and has made plans to go and visit the colleague again sometime when the world opens back up!

Kim then popped back in the office to hang out with her teammate and just have a chat. It was so lovely to just sit, talk nonsense and plan for the next two events a little as well.

Evening

When Kim got home, we had some tomato and mushroom pasta which was delicious and then watched some TV and played some games.

Kim was pretty tired as she was up from 5am, so we tried to head to bed at a good time.

Place 72 – Day 240: Vancouver, BC – One Working, One Not

Curtis’ Day

Curtis was the only one of us working today, due to Kim having the day off as her company has a UK office and they have today off, so Kim does too!

Curtis had a meeting right at 09:00 with his team to discuss about the projects for the last 2 weeks and then after that, Kim was up and we went for our walk around 10:00.

We did our usual walk and then when we got back home, Curtis started working on a SharePoint site which he accidentally spent a couple of hours on, but it was worth it in the end and he got some really good feedback on that.

After lunch, Curtis had a meeting with his team which ended up being very short and then after that meeting he had a project meeting.

Curtis spent the last 2 hours of the day doing tickets and doing some training.

Kim’s Day

Kim got to sleep in a little and then once she got up she went for a walk with Curtis.

Once Kim got back, she got showered and ready to head out to the shops!

Kim was out for around 2 hours, heading to a variety of shops she needed to go to, including the drug store, supermarket and a couple of other stores.

Once Kim got back, she led in bed and watched some of the Babies Netflix show.

Evening

We did our workout and Kim did some stretching and then we did some laundry.

For dinner, Kim made tomato and mushroom with spaghetti and it was excellent!

We watched the first episode of The Mandalorian and then some other shows, including finishing Borderliner.

We played a bit of Need For Speed and then headed to bed.

Neither of us slept very well last night, so we’re hoping for a good night’s sleep.

Place 72 – Day 57: Vancouver, BC – Quarry Rock & Honey Doughnuts

Quarry Rock Hike

We were up at 08:00 and had bagels for breakfast.

We left the house around 10:15 and walked to the train station. We caught a train to the city to then catch a bus.

We got on the bus which took us all the way to Deep Cove, about 45 minutes from downtown Vancouver.

We got off the bus and just started walking. We walked for a bit and then noticed a sign saying we had gone the wrong way and had to turn back and walk all the way back to where we had come from! Luckily, other people had done the same so we weren’t all alone. We also got to see some really nice houses here, so not all was lost.

Once we returned to the right place, we began the walk up to Quarry Rock.

The trail up to the rock was 1.2km with the majority of it being on stairs but through some gorgeous woodland and higher up and up the mountain.

It took us about 30-45 minutes to get to the top, dodging people and crossing rivers (on bridges).

Once we got to the top, we had a stunning view! The weather wasn’t great, so there was no sun, but it was still nice to sit down and admire.

We walked back down the trail as we were very hungry and thirsty!

Lunch & Doughnuts

We were recommended a cafe called Cafe Orso so we went in, grabbed a table and each got a coffee.

Along with the coffee, we got half a tuna melt each with a tomato bisque, which was great!

Cafe Orso | Deep Cove, BC

Rating:- 8.5/10

We left after our lunch, incredibly full, and went for a bit of a walk and sit down by the beach.

We then went to Honey Doughnuts to see what all the fuss was about. This place was recommended to us by more than one person and the queue was out the door, so we had thought it would mean it was amazing!

Honey Doughnuts | Deep Cove, BC

Rating:- 7/10

We weren’t amazed by the doughnuts, they were just OK. Kim had a chocolate glazed and Curtis had a cinnamon sugar.

We left here and had a bit of a sit down whilst we ate.

We then left and caught the bus back, which took about 50 minutes.

We stopped off at the liquor store and bought some cans of Jameson, Giner & Lime to try.

Evening

We got a lot of admin done in the evening, as well as going for an evening walk.

We weren’t hungry after our lunch so Kim had a salad and Curtis had some toast.

We watched some TV and went to bed. We were exhausted!
