Place 72 – Day 62: Vancouver, BC – Free Fancy Lunch & 20,000 Views!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis spent his morning catching up on tickets from yesterday, as well as setting up a laptop for someone to replace their old one.

A lot of new tickets came in throughout the day in general, so Curtis was very busy!

Curtis learned a few things today, as well as spent a while trying to fix a specific problem.

For lunch, Curtis went to the food truck directly outside his office building and got a buritto bowl.

The afternoon wasn’t much less busy and Curtis was juggling multiple things at once.

Some things needed testing around 16:50 for a change that was happening in the evening, so Curtis helped with that and then left for the day.

Kim’s Day

Kim spent most of her day on just a few things. When Kim got in she started her day by going through her template emails and adjusting them slightly.

Then Kim moved on to updating her contact and info list of vendors she has frequently used. It’s much easier to have everything saved in one place with active links rate than checking multiple areas!

Kim then spent some time trying to get a quote that she requested yesterday. Having received no answer from one of the companies Kim proceeded to place an order with a different company.

Kim then headed out with a colleague to a local hotel to join their sales rep for lunch. It was a great way to properly and informally catch up. It was also a great excuse to sample a few dishes from their sharing menu. They started with a lovely beetroot and cheese dish, it was so beautiful and tasted phenomenal. Then the show started!

The whole table was covered in plates! There was, scallops, squid, tuna mac and cheese, brocollini, korean chicken, a quinoa salad and a lovely egg plant dish. The girls tucked in and Kim even tried a bit of a scallop. It wasn’t lovely but it wasn’t the worst food she has ever eaten! After trying all that food, and even boxing up a little to take home, they then brought out a small dessert platter! The platter had 3 little blueberry tarts, orange cheesecake and a little chocolate orange truffle. Just the right amount after a massive feast!

After lunch had flown by, Kim’s colleague had to head back to the office while Kim got a tour of one of the rooms, a few of the meeting rooms, the ballroom and the amenities room. It was so lovely to see the hotel and be able to make solid recommendations to any visitors we may have while Kim is here in Vancouver.

When Kim rolled herself back to work she found a few items on her desk that needed to be sent out. She popped them all in envelopes and was ready to use the post stampy machine thing to weigh and out the postage on the envelopes. However, when she went to do it, the machine had an error. After about 5 attempts of trying to call and receiving a dead line and one answer and being hung up on, Kim eventually spoke to someone to trouble shoot the issue and walk her through putting the machine through it’s update. After that long call Kim was able to put the postage on the items and have them ready to be sent out.

Kim then focused her attention to completing the booking for the bus hire for the upcoming summer party.

After she made progress with the paperwork for the bus company Kim then looked into and contacted a company about a cake that needs to be ordered. She emailed the company and then left to go home! It was a productive and filling day!

Today, we hit 20,000 blog views! Thank you all so much, especially if you read the blog every day!

When we got home, we went right out for a walk. The weather was perfect for a stroll, so we walked and discussed our days some more.

Once we arrived back at our apartment, Kim had a tuna sandwich and Curtis had some toast as we both had big lunches so we didn’t need any proper dinner.

We sat and started the new series of Lucifer and then had a bit of an earlier night, in comparison to recent evenings.

Place 72 – Day 56: Vancouver, BC – Homemade Games & Quiz

Curtis’ Day

Curtis got to work and there were a few tickets waiting for him to complete.

It was a pretty busy day today, similar to yesterday where he had a lot of small things to do. There were a few different things, too, such as giving someone access to voicemail and some other things he hadn’t done before.

Curtis had to complete an offboard in the afternoon as well as setup some laptops for the summer camp that is happening next week.

Curtis had a beer at about 16:15 whilst he did some final bits of work and then the voicemail website access went down so he spent some time trying to figure that out with his colleagues.

Curtis walked home and got home in record time!

Kim’s Day

Kim set to work once she arrived and spent the morning catching up on emails and general ad hoc administrative tasks. This kept her nice and busy for a while. Kim then got on with organising some things for the summer parties which was fun!

Kim then went and set up some seating for the end of month talks. At the last friday of each month the office orders a few pizzas and people have the opportunity to talk in front of the company for 6 minutes on a topic that interests them!

Before the talks can start people need their pizza! So Kim set up the pizzas and people dug in and grabbed their seats ready for the talks. Today the talks were about keyboards, fishing, something to do with time and relative distance and scrapbooking. It was really cool to get an idea of the things people you work with find interesting. The thing that surprised Kim the most was that at the end of all the talks, everyone restacked all the chairs. Not even badly wither! Neat piles exactly where they were before the talks! Kim was gobsmacked, she was expecting to be picking napkins and plates off of the floor. Its a small thing, but makes a huge difference to Kim’s day.

Someone had some visitors coming in today so Kim made time to ensure she was at her desk when they arrived. This gave Kim time to organise a quiz for the end of week drinks this afternoon.

Once the visitors had arrived Kim went and decorated the kitchen area for Canada Day! Kim put up flags, banners a table cloth and weird hanging decorations. It looked so cool. The snacks were typical canadian snacks of all dressing ruffle crisps, lays (walkers) ketchup crisps and Canada day m&ms. Another thing that mim made was a fun game of ‘pin the leaf on the flag’. Kim was unnecessarily proud of this!

Kim enjoyed standing around and chatting to people and then someone asked where the games were. So Kim set up pin the leaf on the flag and everyone got involved, had a go and really enjoyed themselves.

Just after that someone mentioned the quiz and everyone then wanted to do that as well! So Kim ran out, grabbed her quiz and premade answer sheets and laughed her way through the quiz! It was so much fun and so nice for Kim to see people enjoying something she had put together!
After the quiz Kim had a quick chat with people and then headed home, it was 17:45 at this point!

Friday Night!

We were both tired when we got home so we chilled out and even had a little nap! We watched some Youtube and then some TV! Curtis ate a combination of some leftovers for dinner and Kim had a sandwich which she didn’t eat at lunch today.

Place 72 – Day 55: Vancouver, BC – BC Tech Impact Awards

Curtis’ Day

Curtis’ day was packed today, mostly with small things.

There was the odd thing here or there and quite a bit of purchasing to do, too.

Curtis gave out 2 laptops today too, to replace old ones, and also had a 1 to 1 with the office manager.

Curtis got to work quite early so he left a early.

Kim’s Day

Before Kim got to work she popped across to the fancy supermarket to grab some breakfast snacks for her meeting. She is hoping that bribery will encourage attendance.

It worked! The meeting room was full, and the meeting about the project went really well! Some snacks were left and they went in the kitchen for other people to help themselves.

Kim then kept on with general admin and updating her fancy new computer.

At 12 Kim was expecting some pizza to arrive. When Kim called to ask if everything was okay it was said to her that she had ordered for next week! So Kim and her colleague popped over to the fancy supermarket to grab some sandwiches and sushi to replace the pizza. So all was saved!

Then suddenly it was 1 and Kim had organised to help someone get a standing desk. The plan was to take one and lower it to her height. However after a few minutes of twisting the table legs they realised the height wasn’t changing. Kim then gave up and took a smaller table and replaced the legs for adjustable ones. This took way less time and was much easier!

After this Kim sat in a meeting room and had lunch with her colleague. It was nice to sit and have a chat!

After lunch Kim headed to the arts and crafts store to buy decorations for the Friday afternoon drinks! Given that its Canada day on Monday the theme for the drinks are Canada Day themed! We also wanted a game or 2 to play as well, so check out tomorrows blog to see the genius game Kim made!

When Kim got back she played catch up for the last day and a bit. Having her computer switched over meant basically starting over, so much logging in and reorganizing things.

Just after 5 Kim went and got ready for an event she said she would like to attend, the technology Impact Awards (TIA).

Kims company had a few spare seats and Kim took the opportunity to go and see some of the innovative awards being given out in Vancouver.

It was such a fun evening and a really good way to meet a few other people within the company!

At about 1030ish the awards came to an end, about an hour late, so there was no hesitation to head home for Kim. So Kim walked to the train station.

While she was finding her way someone asked for directions and they happened to be heading on the same line as Kim so Kim had them walk with her to the correct platform. They had a lovely chat about the guys home, Korea and the differences between Vancouver and Korea, as he was here for a month to learn English. He was very sweet and thankful to be on the right train!

Lazy Evening

Curtis did nothing all evening and didn’t even have dinner as he wasn’t really hungry all day.

Curtis played some games and watched some streams and just lazed around.

Place 72 – Day 21: Vancouver,BC – Delicious Coffee & Sandwich

Admin Morning

We had a bit more admin to do before we start work, which included completing forms for the roles as well as organising pickups for furniture we are buying and other things like this.

We are getting close to being ready for everything and once we move in we should have most furnishings!

Coffee

We got a little bored so decided to go for a coffee. The rain had stopped so it was the perfect time.

We had walked past a cafe just down the road a few times and thought it looked nice, so we went there for a change.

We each got a coffee, Curtis a cappucino and Kim got a ‘mocha madness’ which was coffee, milk, chocolate, caramel & cinnamon…it sounds a lot but it was amazing!

Along with this, we shared a sandwich which was ham and salad with a delicious sauce inside!

All-in-all, this cafe was very well priced with great food and pretty good coffee.

We left here and walked back home.

Once we got back, we did some more admin and then made dinner.

We had beef sirloin tip strips with our usual rice and vegetable combo but mixed with a teriyaki sauce.

We did very little throughout the rest of the day.

Place 80 – San Antonio,TX 🇺🇸 – Old Meets New

San Antonio

We actually got up on time today, got ready and drove out to San Antonio.

We had been told that it was a must see multiple times by different people, so we had to check it out.

We drove for around an hour, found some parking and went for a walk around!

We started with a walk around the river as it was the top thing to do there.

The river was beautiful. It felt very European, especially Italian. It was more of an urban river walk, than a traditional green river walk.

The city is a very interesting combination of old meets new as the majority of it is old but there are hints of new areas around. From each place we have visited in the US so far, we’ve not seen anything like it.

We walked up to the main plaza which has a cathedral on it also. The Spanish wanted to make it similar to Spain, so they made the cathedral the centre point and built a square around it, which is the Main Plaza.

We got hungry when we left this area and found a sandwich shop which we got a Banh Mi from and it was surprisingly good.

We were feeling refreshed after some food so we went to check out The Alamo which is a old military fort area from the 1700s.

The Alamo wasn’t very interesting so we left and had a brief walk down the other side of the river walk before heading to the car and driving home.

Once we got home, Curtis watched the Leafs game and Kim got some packing done. We then ate a pizza and went to get a hot chocolate from Starbucks with the hope it will make us sleep tonight!

We fly again tomorrow…it’ll be a fun time for the next week or so.

Place 73 – Day 3: Seattle,WA – First Starbucks Store & MOPOP

The Actual First Starbucks

We had to pay for the bus this morning, which was a change from yesterday!

We got into the centre and went straight to the actual first ever Starbucks.

We waited in line to get into the store and before long, we got in!

It is a little tight and crowded and you cannot sit inside, but we got our coffee and headed back outside.

We sat and had our coffee on a bench with a great view of the mountains!

Museum Of Pop Culture

We next planned to go to the Space Needle, so we walked towards it.

Once we got there, we got some good photos of the space needle and then realised we didn’t have enough money on us to go in, so we’ll have to do it another day, but we did have other plans anyway!

The Space Needle

Instead, we went to the MOPOP (Museum Of Pop Culture).

This has all things from video games to movies of different genres to TV shows and also music.

There were a few different sections within the museum and the first we came to was the Sci-Fi section, with a brief stop off at the video game area!

Video Games

We played a few indie games and it felt like we were right back in the UK at EGX!

Sci-Fi

The science fiction section had mostly costumes that had been worn for science fiction characters, such as enemies from Doctor Who, the hoverboards from Back To The Future as well as Star Wars and Star Trek items.

Star Trek Weapons

Horror

We accidentally went through to the next area which was the horror section.

It was similar to the Sci-Fi section, but with horror. There were a lot of props as well as things like the costume from Friday 13th.

There was an area which had fake dead people wrapped in sheets and hanging, which was quite creepy!

Fantasy

We moved on upstairs to the fantasy area. This spoke about movies and games based in the fantasy genre, the big two it mentioned being Harry Potter and Lord Of The Rings.

There were more items on display from both of these films, as well as other items.

Pearl Jam

There was a whole floor on the band Pearl Jam, from Seattle.

We had not heard of them, but we enjoyed reading about them as well as looking at their memorabilia.

Lunch

We left the museum after this and found somewhere delicious for lunch.

Just before we left for lunch, we found the International Fountain, which is just a big fountain which is synchronised with music.

We went to a place named Michou.

This place was fairly busy when we arrived but it was an Italian style deli with a lot of, large, sandwich options.

Curtis got a roast chicken & chipotle sandwich and Kim got a beef and cheese sandwich. Both sandwiches were delicious, so we ate those up and then got out the way.

Cinema

We walked down to the cinema to watch the film Fighting With My Family.

Neither of us realised this was based on a true story and then when Curtis realised who it was about, it all made sense!

We really enjoyed the film, actually. We aren’t sure how anyone from any other country would understand it as it has a lot of British humour and slang, but it was good for us!

Dinner

We got back home via an Uber and had leftover Thai green curry, which was, as last night, delicious!

We watched some TV and did some research for tomorrow and future travels before hitting the hay.

Place 68 – Day 6: Kerikeri – Singing Bird & Split

We were up a little later at about 09:00 today as we were doing just 2/3 hours of cleaning today.

Kim spent the time washing the outside of the house and Curtis cleaned the inside of the windows. We got a lot done in the short time, which felt great!

Curtis watched hockey and we had tuna sandwiches for lunch.

We then booked up a place from Wednesday for a few days.

After that, we made dinner. Dinner was steak sandwiches, which were delicious as ever. Whilst making dinner, we had music on and soon realised that the bird was chirping along! We tested this by stopping the music and playing again and, she enough, when the music wasn’t on, the bird didn’t chirp…we found this much more entertaining then it should be!

We ate dinner and then spent the rest of the evening watching TV and films. We watched the film Split which was an excellent film!

Tomorrow, we have a plan to go out for the day, so that should be a good read.
