Place 71 – Day 3: Portland, OR – Chinatown, Downtown & Food Trucks

Admin Morning

We were up early and were ready to go!

We went down for our breakfast and were reunited with some of our crew from yesterday.

We then went upstairs, got showered and planned to start the day.

We did a bit of admin and before we knew it, it was 14:00!

We decided we should go out for a bit, so we walked down to Chinatown for something to eat.

Very Stylish Looking Buildings Near Our Hostel

Chinatown

We had thought that Chinatown would be awesome, as it is in most places, but it was very disappointing.

There was very little to eat and it was very run down.

A Bit Of Wall Art In Chinatown

Downtown

We left Chinatown and went to the downtown area, which was very built up and actually looked really nice.

We walked around a bit and around some malls, but before that we stopped at a Vietnamese street food place called ‘cuòn‘.

This place had really good (but not perfect) Banh Mi & incredible Vietnamese iced coffee.

Beer Tasting & Uno

We got back and chilled out for a bit before we did the free hostel beer tasting.

The hostel has beer on tap and we were able to get 6 to try and then a pint for $2 discount after, so we got the group from yesterday all back together and had some drinks.

2 girls, one from France and another from Denmark were playing Uno next to us and so we all joined in and had a few games of Uno, which was great fun!

Food Trucks

We planned to got to a comedy show at 22:30, so we all headed to town to get food first.

We were informed of some food trucks, so we went to find those and see what there was.

There was a lot of greek/turkish, so we decided on kebabs!

Kim had a chicken kebab and Curtis had a pork one. They were just what we needed. We all stood around and ate our food before going towards the comedy show.

The Gang!

The Comedy Show

We got to the venue and were unable to get a seat at the comedy show, so we sat up in the bar area instead.

We had a drink and chatted between us, as well as speaking with some other people in the bar.

It got pretty late so everyone headed out, but we had another awesome day!

We have fun planned for tomorrow so should be an interesting one.

Place 65 – Day 1: Nelson 🇳🇿 – Antiques, Friend Meetup & Large Beach Stroll

We were up around 08:00 and got ready to leave Christchurch.

Once we left, in the incredible heat again, we drove on towards Murchison.

We had visited Murchison on our previous road trip so we knew how awesome it was and that we had to visit again!

The drive there was beautiful. Very hilly & scenic. This drive took around 3.5 hours.

We arrived in murchison and were a little confused at the amount of people as when we were previously there, it was almost empty!

The temperature was over 30°C, so it was certainly very hot. We were all rather peckish, so we found a place to eat. We all had a large coffee and a bite to eat. Kim had pancakes and Curtis had an eggs benedict.

We walked to the Antiques store which was just around the corner. There was an old car, type writers, old cash machines and lot of other items, all for sale!

We left the antique store and got back into the car.

We drove down to the campsite we stayed at last time to show Kim’s parents as it was a really nice area. We then drove onward to Nelson.

The drive to Nelson only took us a short amount of time. In Nelson, we visited Kim’s friend Matt. We met at his house, where we met Hannah, his partner.

We sat and chatted with them at their house for a little and then Tom and Matt did some mountain biking whilst we went with Maggie down to a beach.

The beach was very, very long and beautiful! The sand was perfect and the water was the perfect temperature.

We strolled along the beach, in the water, for a while and then went to get an ice cream. we got the standard ‘Mr Whippy’ ice creams, which didn’t last too long!

We walked back on the beach again, for a long while, eventually reaching the dog beach and petting all the dogs.

We left the beach eventually and walked over to a pub where we booked earlier in the day and sat down for some food.

We had to wait a while for Tom, Matt & Hannah to arrive, but once they did we were all very hungry and couldn’t wait for our meals.

We ordered but the food took over an hour to arrive! We shared a meat platter which was just OK.

We left here around 22:15 and said goodbye to Matt and Hannah. They were lovely and we’d love to keep in touch!

We then drove all the way to Picton, where we are catching a ferry at 02:15. We stopped én route to Picton and looked at the stars which were stunning.

We got to the ferry port and we will be boarding the ferry. Once we get onto the ferry, we will have a cabin to sleep in for 4 hours or so, and then we will be up around 06:30 to head off the ferry.

Place 49 – Day 365: Auckland – Belgian Cafe Dinner, Mini Christmas Market Walk & 1 Year in NZ!

After waking up at a similar time as yesterday, Kim went out to McDonald’s to get a breakfaost from there and we sat and watched videos in bed for a while. The perfect Sunday morning.

Kim went out early afternoon to see if Danielle’s mum had any shoes she could borrow for the last week of work. Turns out that she didn’t, but Kim still got to see Danielle and even went for a milkshake!

Today, it is apparently 1 year since we arrived in New Zealand, which is odd because we arrived on the 18th, not the 16th!

Once Kim was back, we waited for a bit and then we drove down to the city to meet Colten and Sarah at a Belgian cafe/pub.

The Belgian cafe is somewhere we’ve walked past a few times and really wanted to go in, so we’re glad we got to go! This place does remind us of Europe.

We had to wait a little for a table, but Colten & Sarah hadn’t arrived yet either. There were way too many beers to choose from, but the food looked incredible!

Once we got a table, it was time to order! Curtis got the Venison Pie which had a cinnamon gravy and Kim got the lamb shoulder. Curtis’ was tasty but the peas and carrots were cold. He’d give his 6/10. Kim’s was OK but a lot of fat and just nothing special, she gave it 5/10.

After we finished up there, we went for a walk to the Sky Tower where there was a small christmas market.

Curtis and Colten got a coffee each and Kim got a chocolate sundae from McDonald’s. Colten and Sarah got their portrait drawn and we had a bit of a walk around.

We had a chat for a bit and then it was home time. We walked back to the cars, said goodbye and went home.

We got home and Kim had a chat with her mum and dad before we went to sleep.

Place 49 – Day 315: Auckland – Halloween Party!

We woke up at 09:00 when we planned to wake up at 10:00 but we had an alarm at 09:00 from last week which woke us up.

We got out of bed at 10:00 and Kim started to make crepes whilst Curtis put a wash on and had a shower.

Danielle and josh arrived around 11:30 and we had crepes, strawberries and bananas.

We left our house and went to Albany Mall with Danielle and Josh to get halloween costumes.

Curtis got a pirate costume and a pirate hat and then Kim got a pirate hat, too.

We then went to Cotton:On and Kim got her costume for the evening and we then went home.

We were only at home briefly and then we got back in the car and drove to Glenfield Mall where we got a coffee and some coffee beans from our favourite coffee shop and then we on to do the shopping

After shopping, we got back home and got read to go out! We were both pirates so we donned our pirate hats and waited for Danielle and Josh.

When Danielle and Josh arrived, we had a Jaeger bomb, a whiskey and a wine and then Danielle drove us all to the city.

When we got to the city, we met us with Kim’s friend who was running the party at Holey Moley. Holey Moley is a mini golf bar which we played 9 holes at and had a great time! Curtis even came 3rd out of 10 people!

We finished at Holey Moley and left there for another bar. Unfortunately, a lot of people left so we tried to get into another bar but were unable to due to our costumes, so we went to an Irish bar and then got a drink there.

We then got a lift to Takapuna and went to The elephant wrestler where we had a whiskey each followed by an espresso martini.

After that, we listened to the great music they were playing and then decided we’d had enough and got an Uber home.

We got home and then that was bed time at 01:00!
