Place 72 – Day 991: Vancouver, BC – Beach, Drinks & Snacks!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had a company wide meeting at 09:00 which unveiled some very interesting news!

After that, Curtis had a team meeting and then he talked a colleague through how to do something.

Curtis then had some tickets to do, followed by a meeting to help someone with something. The afternoon was mostly tickets and then he also did a bit of security work.

Curtis got some of his Norwegian homework done in the early evening, until Kim got home.

Kim’s Day

Kim had another busy and productive day! She woke up and got ready. Then she had breakfast and started whiteboarding with her managers. They managed to get into some really great topics and iron so much out.

In the early afternoon they left the hotel, popped things in the car and headed over to a nearby cafe to finish the day. Kim was able to get a few things done while everyone else was on a call and then they continued the discussions. Later on Kim did a mini presentation and tour of some research she had been doing and was really happy to know she was on the right track and getting stuff done!

Evening

We walked down to the beach and met a couple of Kim’s colleagues who were down there. We sat and chatted for a little bit but then needed to head to the hotel Kim was at last night to meet another colleague and friend of Kim’s there as they had some drink tokens for the bar! Curtis finally got to meet her after speaking with her a few times on Zoom but never in person.

We had a drink and a snack and had some really good chats. Overall, a pretty fun evening!

We stopped at our favourite Vietnamese place to get a banh mi for dinner.

We got home and watched a bit of TV together and headed to be fairly early, for us.

Place 72 – Day 961: Vancouver, BC – New Glasses!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had a quick onboard orientation in the morning and then joined his team to use a new software for 2 weeks!

Curtis had to setup accounts for another new hire and then he got right into a team meeting followed by some project work, which lasted really for most of the day.

After work, Curtis got the remainder of his Norwegian homework completed and thrn played some games whilst waiting for Kim to finish up work.

Curtis’ new glasses arrived today, so he can actually see well again!

Kim’s Day

Kim went to start her day with a meeting just as it got moved. So she was able to get some admin done. She then joined a meeting about a research project that will start over the next week or so.

Around mid morning Kim joined the recruitment meeting that was pushed from earlier in the morning. It was interesting and involved lots of interesting discussions. She then joined three different one week check ins before also having a one month chat. Kim really enjoys interacting with new employees and seeing how things are going.

In the afternoon Kim joined a team meeting before having a quick break for lunch. She then joined another recruitment meeting for a department to see the new roles they may want to hire for over the next 12 months.

Kim then had a a while to get a bit of admin done before she had a chat with a few people about another new role and how one team is likely to look and be shaped over the coming months.

In the evening Kim worked on setting up some laptops. Two worked fine and the final one has been a nightmare. Kim has totally set it up yet it still isn’t working as expected. The plan is currently to leave it overnight and try again in the morning. If that doesn’t work she will have to factory reset and start the whole process again!

Evening

We had a delicious dinner! Kim had a mushroom sandwich with caramelised onions and relish whilst Curtis made a steak sandwich with caramelised onions and relish. Delicious! We were still a little hungry after though, so we had some salad.

Kim finished up a bit more work and then we went out for a night walk.

Place 72 – Day 920: Vancouver, BC – Nearly Overslept!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis did indeed stay up and watch Great Britain play their final game. They ended up finishing 13/16 which was a huge achievement for them! The game last night ended 6-3 to Switzerland which was a much better result than anyone expected.

Whilst it was great to watch hockey, going to bed at 04:30 and waking at 08:30 wasn’t too great and Curtis paid the price today! He felt very tired in the morning but felt better as the day progressed, which was good, as it got busy!

It also didn’t help that we almost overslept as we forgot to set the right alarm!

Curtis had a bit of work to do in the morning and then had a call with Microsoft about a few different things.

After his call, he had a Norwegian lesson an it was really, really good! He was speaking without really thinking which was great.

After that, and for most of the rest of the day, he was in and out of meetings regarding one particular issue which he also had to write up some documentation for and make some notes.

He was able to get some tickets done in the afternoon as well as some other admin before calling it a day.

Kim’s Day

Today was a long and meeting filled day! Kim started her day having a chat about a trivia night that the company is parking up with another company for on Friday! She then gave a quick update at the finance meeting before having a quick chat with a new starter to see how their first week was.

After giving an update in the weekly meeting Kim joined a great meet the team to hang out with her new team members, it was awesome! She then had a connect with each of the new starters to give them an overview of the past few months or allocate work for the next couple of weeks.

To start the afternoon Kim joined a recruitment meeting and then went into a candidate review and mini forecast meeting. She was then able to get some admin done before showing her new teammate the folder structure and where they can find things.

In the late afternoon Kim sat down with a few executive members to discuss a new role. She then went into an interview and spent the evening working on some admin of emails and reorganising a couple of documents.

Evening

We had chicken burgers again, Kim made a bunch the other day so they’re nice and easy to have!

We had those with some leftover sweet potato fries and chilled out for the evening, along with a nice walk.

We were meant to be selling our old sofa tomorrow, but the person cancelled which is frustrating!

Place 72 – Day 913: Vancouver, BC – Forgot To Book!

Curtis’ Day

We were both up at 06:00 this morning. Kim was to do work, but Curtis got up to watch Great Britain’s next game against Denmark.

The game went to overtime and whilst GB lost, it was a terrific game.

Curtis then started work and was meant to have a Norwegian lesson about an hour in, but then realised he hasn’t actually remembered to book it! He’s booked in for next week, but that’s a little annoying. On the plus side, he had some more time to get things done.

He got tickets done throughout the day and also reviewed a policy as part of a project.

Curtis had his weekly team meeting before lunch and then got more tickets completed.

Once he was done with work, Curtis watched the Toronto Maple Leafs edge that little bit closer to the 2nd round of the playoffs with another win!

Kim’s Day

Kim had a long but super productive day! She started by checking the laptops she sorted over the weekend and getting them sent out. She then did some research and got some other admin done before having a quick check in with a new starter. She then gave her update in th company meeting.

After the big meeting Kim had a call with an exec to have a chat about a hopeful new hire. Then Kim had some time for some collaborative work before giving an update to the finance team.

After lunch Kim joined a recruitment meeting and then continue some collaborative work with her teammate. She had an interview and interview review after that.

For the rest of the day Kim had one long meeting that she kept jumping out of to attend other meetings. The long meeting was to discuss a role and the applicants in the hiring process. She left the meeting to do a review of another interview and then she left again to go over the onboarding plan for two new starters for next week.

Evening

We had leftover Mac and cheese for dinner and chilled out for the evening. We were both very tired from waking up early this morning.

We did get out for a walk around 10pm, which was really nice and needed!

Place 72 – Day 899: Vancouver, BC – Delicious Risotto

Curtis’ Day

Curtis thought he had a meeting at 09:30, but he didn’t. This freed up some time to get some work done.

At 10:00, Curtis had his Norwegian lesson and then right after that he spent a lot of time trying to get his project completed, which he thought he eventually did.

Curtis also had to talk someone through doing something to hopefully fix some issues that Curtis has been trying to fix for the last month or so.

In the afternoon, after finally being able to have some lunch, Curtis did plan to do some training he needed to do to prepare for later in the week, but unfortunately it turned out the thing be setup for the project earlier didn’t actually work as expected, so it was back to the drawing board and he discussed it with his team as well as trying to figure some things out himself. That means a lot of tomorrow will be taken up with that, too!

Kim’s Day

Kim had 9 meetings today! The first was to discuss a software that the company are thinking of putting in place but then it morphed into a planning meeting to discuss how to review software requests in general. It was a very productive and interesting meeting. Before the company meeting Kim had a quick call with a teammate to hand over a few items. She then joined the company wide meeting and took notes.

Kim then had a planning meeting with a couple of the exec team members and the meeting was crashed by a few people who jumped in. She then provided an update to the finance team in their meeting.

She then had a little break and got some admin done before joining a recruitment meeting and went from that straight into a meeting with Development and IT to organise a few things. She then had a chat with a hopeful new employee before ending the day by reviewing candidates in the pipeline.

Delicious Risotto

We went out for a walk after work and stopped by the liquor store to get some white wine to put in our risotto!

Kim was making her incredible risotto, which took about 45 minutes once we got back. It was terrific as ever and we watched some TV whilst we ate that and afterwards, also.

Place 72 – Day 897: Vancouver, BC – Switching Up Our Walk

We woke up fairly late, accidentally, and then had some french toast for breakfast.

Once we were done with breakfast, we watched the Formula 1 race and then got ourselves ready to go out.

We went out for a walk, as usual, but we walked a bit of a different way once we got to the park.

We walked around a lake that is in the park, which was a little quieter, greener and had some herons in the lake that we watched for a bit.

We walked back home and were pretty hungry, so made some dinner when we got back. We had vegetables, egg and chicken on top of rice, which was really nice.

We went out to do the weekly shop, but we also went to Canadian Tire to pickup some new cutlery.

We did our shop and headed back to the car, where there was a bit of an altercation happening. Nothing physical, but we waited with one of the people until the police arrived. That was a bit of excitement for the evening but luckily everyone was ok.

We headed back home and watched a bit of TV, then we did a little bit of reading in Norwegian. Curtis bought Kim a book for her birthday and she took a look at it today and enjoyed reading in Norwegian!

Kim then had a bath whilst Curtis played some games, then we watched some TV for the remainder of the evening.

Place 72 – Day 873: Vancouver, BC – Evening Event

Curtis’ Day

Curtis was meant to have a Norwegian lesson this morning, but his teacher was sick so that didn’t happen.

As a result, his morning was very quite, right up until just before lunch when he had to reach out to some people to check some things on their laptops.

After lunch, Curtis had a project meeting and then after he did more work with people on getting laptops setup how they should be.

Once he got that done, he had an interesting thing to get done for someone, but he had to do some research and some playing around but still couldn’t get it done quite right, so he’ll have to take a stab at it tomorrow.

Curtis then watched hockey and played games for a lot of the evening, whilst Kim was in her interviews.

Kim’s Day

Kim started the day with a quick meeting with her teammate to discuss a virtual event happened in the evening. She then attended a webinar before joining two recruitment meetings back to back.

Just before and after lunch Kim had two interviews and then she joined a chat to discuss how they went and the next steps.

In the afternoon Kim had a few meetings. The first was her weekly meeting with her teammate and then she had another chat with a different teammate. After this Kim decided to take a break and run a couple of errands as she was joining an event in the evening so she wanted to actively take time off to recharge and get fresh air before.

Kim timed her break terribly and had to join a call while out and about. Once she was home Kim hosted a quick introduction meeting to discuss the event they were all about to join. This was a speed dating style networking / interview event. It was so interesting and Kim met some wonderful people through 1-1 chats and by being on the virtual booth. After the event everyone joined a call to discuss candidates and what happens next. It was a long day but so interesting!

Late Evening

Once Kim was done, we had some chilli for dinner and watched a little TV before heading to bed. It’s been a busy week this week!

Place 72 – Day 582: Vancouver, BC – Informative Meetings

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had a company-wide meeting to discuss what’s currently going in around the business and to get some updates on some things. These are always super interesting and informative.

Once that was done, Curtis had a few tickets to get done throughout the day and also he had quite a few discussions with his team and other teams about different processes, getting an order of laptops completed as well as getting some information about some onboards.

Curtis did some very interesting Norwegian homework to end the day and then watched hockey.

Kim’s Day

In the morning Kim had a fair few meetings! A couple were HR based and one was about recruitment. She also had some training on the benefits platform and how everything for that works too. The training was so great and Kim was so relieved to understand things a little more.

Just after midday Kim joined the weekly recruitment meeting and then she hosted the weekly dance off. This week they danced to Gangnam Style. Then Kim co-hosted an interview

In the afternoon Kim joined another recruitment call and then had two catch ups with people after the meeting.

Later in the evening Kim joined a call to discuss a design project that she might be helping with. It was really interesting and she can’t wait to help out!

Evening

Once hockey was done and Kim finished work, we made baked potatoes and watched some TV for the evening, as well as playing some games.

Place 72 – Day 573: Vancouver, BC – More Courier Woes!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had some tickets and other work to get done in the morning, including some admin for someone going on parental leave.

Once he did that he had his Norwegian lesson, which seems to go better and better each time!

Curtis was meant to have a meeting in the afternoon but that got cancelled, so Curtis got a lot of tickets done which was great! A very productive day.

Kim’s Day

Kim had a day full of meetings today! She started off with some admin and getting things set up for the next few weeks before joining and presenting in the weekly meeting.

She then facilitated a project meeting, it was so productive and interesting. Kim then joined a call to discuss potentially working with a vendor in regards to training. That meeting also went well and Kim is excited to see what the next steps are.

In the afternoon Kim hosted a procurement meeting to discuss how the process should work and then Kim joined a meeting to go over how an interview went during the day.

She finished the day by calling FedEx to get an update in regards to a delivery. It wasn’t great news and Kim found out the delivery would be attempted again the following day.

Kim then did a little more admin and ticked a few things off of her list.

Evening

Kim popped out to get a few things from the shop for dinner and we had a Santa Fe salad for dinner with spicy chicken which was excellent!

We played games and watched TV for the rest of the evening. The days seem so long now that daylight savings is in effect.

Place 72 – Day 559: Vancouver, BC – We Definitely Have A New Apartment!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had his Norwegian lesson in the morning which went incredibly well! He had a great conversation that flowed naturally.

After that, he had back to back meetings. The first was a project update meeting and the second was to understand some issues for a team and make a plan of how to resolve those.

Once that meeting was done and Kim was done with her meeting, we took our lunch break and used it to go to the apartment we were offered just to make sure it’s what we want…which it was! The landlord was amazing and the space was even more perfect then we thought.

We verbally agreed to sign and got all the paperwork to sort out!

For some of the afternoon, Curtis looked up about swapping internet providers to save some money at the new apartment, as well as hired a moving company as we are super lazy and can’t be bothered to do it ourselves.

We got that done and looked over the lease agreement and contract etc.

Kim’s Day

Kim worked in a few documents to be ready for meetings for the day. She then joined a recruitment meeting to discuss one departments needs for the next few months. Kim was able to get a great idea of the roles needed and how to put together the job descriptions for them.

She then presented in the weekly meeting before joining the weekly project huddle.

After the viewing Kim did a little training with her new teammate and made sure that they have the right log ins and accesses. She then had a meeting with another teammate to go over documents that they have been working on.

To finish the day Kim did a little admin and then popped out to a shop to pick up something that had been delivered. It turns out that it hasn’t been delivered, so Kim went to another shop for some things for dinner and then headed home.

Evening

When Kim finished work, we made some food (just some seasoned chicken in a wrap with cheese, BBQ sauce and mayo) then we went out to the supermarket to do our shop.

Once we got back, we took out the bins and then we looked at some additional furniture we will need for our new apartment, most notably a desk and chair each, as we’ll each have dedicated office areas, which is exciting!

Curtis also bought himself a monitor to work and play games on.

We relaxed for what was left of the evening…it was a busy one!
