Place 72 – Day 871: Vancouver, BC – We’ve Moved!

Wake Up

We woke up at 07:45 and got ourselves and the boxes ready for the move!

We didn’t have any breakfast as we weren’t hungry, but we drank some water and a redbull and we were ready.

The Move

The movers actually arrived at 08:45 instead of 09:00, so that was good for us! They were able to get setup before the elevator could be locked.

Luckily, we had done a lot for them and it was nice and straight forward for them.

Whilst they were moving our stuff, we cleaned the old apartment and got that all at a good level.

They finished packing up into the truck and we headed over to the new apartment and got the movers a coffee just before the started unloading at the other end.

The unloading was even quicker and we were done by 11:10, leaving us more than enough time to finish cleaning the old place and then bringing over a few remaining items.

The only hiccup on the day was coffee we had in the fridge spilling all over Kim and a few of our cold items as it was in a bag with other items. Other than that, flawless.

Lunch & The ‘unpacking’

We got hungry, so we took a lunch break and got a sandwich from JJ Bean, where Curtis also bought some coffee beans to tide him over for a bit and due to buying beans, he got a free coffee!

We headed back to the new apartment and ate our lunch whilst relaxing, then got unpacking.

Curtis got some of the kitchenware unpacked and then setup his office! He is pretty excited to have an office, which is awesome. He was then able to watch hockey, though using phone data, whilst waiting for the internet technician to arrive and setup our new internet service.

Internet Setup & Pizza

The technician arrived early and we were able to get online at a good time!

Once we got online, we got everything setup and connected, then once hockey finished Curtis went to collect a pizza for us to eat and Kim got some beers to celebrate the move.

We ate pizza, relaxed on our large sofa and unpacked as much as we could be bothered to do.

Tonight we get to sleep in what Kim has coined ‘the dungeon bedroom’ as it has no windows and should be perfectly dark, just how Kim likes it.

Back to work tomorrow, but we’re both able to work for separate rooms!

We’ll have photos/videos soon of the apartment, once we get it all setup and ready.

Place 72 – Day 869: Vancouver, BC – Successful Packing Day

We woke up at a really good time and Curtis went out to get some croissants for breakfast.

We ate and got ourselves ready, and then began packing up!

We got most of the bathroom packed up, other than stuff we need for the next couple of days, and then we packed all of our clothes and things in the bedroom, so that’s now empty, other than furniture.

We got a lot of kitchen stuff packed up too and then managed to get a nice long walk in, before we took some stuff over to the new apartment.

We got home and were hungry, so we had some chili for dinner and then it was relax time.

Kim had a bath and then we watched some TV.

We have tomorrow off but we actually move on Tuesday. We need to break down the bed and a few other bigger items and pack the last few things.

Nearly there!

Place 72 – Day 867: Vancouver, BC – The Final Weekend

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had a fairly quiet day.

He started with a discussion about a process which needed to be changed which was very productive.

Most the the morning was then spent doing tickets as well as trying to help someone setup a laptop remotely in a US office, which took quite a bit of work.

Curtis then had some lunch and after that had a 1 hour team meeting to discuss the projects over the last 2 weeks.

Curtis finished off some tickets and admin and then finished work for the week.

Kim’s Day

Kim had a block of time in the morning so she got a bit of paperwork done before she had back to back meetings for the rest of the day.

To start with Kim had an interview then she joined a meeting about a project that will be coming up. As it was a full working Friday Kim then hosted a games break just before midday where people joined in to play Skribbl, it was so fun!

After games Kim had a meeting about a new hire and then she went into another interview followed by an interview round up meeting after. As she had been in a couple of interviews for one department during the week Kim met with the other person on the panel to discuss and make a plan for the next steps.

Kim then had another interview and post interview catch up before having an end of week team meeting, a quick chat about a project and then completing some paperwork!

Evening

Today marks the start of our final weekend in this apartment!

We will likely spend it just packing up and getting ready, and then we are off on Monday to finish the last few items before we move on Tuesday.

We ordered some chicken katsu curry to eat tonight, which was pretty good, and then relaxed before we get crazy with packing etc tomorrow.

Not A Great Sleep But A Great Breakfast

We ended up sleeping quite early last night (at least for us). Curtis had a bad headache and we had a nap and then decided once we woke up from our nap that we would just sleep instead. Curtis actually slept quite badly as his headache kept him up, but at 06:00 he took some pain medication and felt much better shortly after and we were able to sleep until 11:00. We got up and really wanted to have some strawberries and pastries, so off to our usual bakery Kim went and got some strawberries from the drug store, too. We ate our breakfast and relaxed for a bit and then Kim went out to collect a laptop from her IT guy from work so she can ship it out tomorrow.

VR Time

Once she got back and we’d both showered, it was time for some VR! We played VR for about an hour or so but Kim started to get a bit motion sick so she led down for a bit.

Hockey & Furniture Hunting

Hockey started and Curtis watched that whilst Kim went on the hunt for some furniture!

Kim found some really good furniture and secured some for tomorrow, most importantly a sofa, which we needed to get before we move in, and also a chair.

Pizza & Chair Collection

Once hockey was done, we got some pizza from our favourite place and then, once we finished eating, we went to get the new chair from an apartment just up a couple of blocks. We got the chair (just a poang from IKEA) and took that to our new apartment! We are allowed to start moving stuff in, so anything new we get we are just taking right there. We took the chair in and also checked out the views and how quiet it was (which was very!) and then left to come back home. We relaxed for the remainder of the evening and then headed to bed, thinking it was Saturday when it’s only Friday!

Place 72 – Day 856: Vancouver, BC – We Have The Keys!

Curtis’ Morning

Curtis had a 09:00 IT orientation with someone which went well, and then he got some work done before he had a team meeting for 1 hour.

New Apartment!

After the meeting, we both went to get the keys to the new apartment! We also did an inspection and asked a few questions etc to our new landlord.

We now have the keys and could start moving a few things there, if we like, which is exciting!

We got back home and had some lunch and then got back on with working.

Curtis’ Afternoon

Curtis had another team meeting about projects and then he got some accounts setup for a new user.

Once that was done, it was the end of the busy work day!

Kim’s Day

Kim had a lovely slower morning where she was able to prepare for the week. She then had her weekly team meeting where they planned their projects for the next few weeks.

Once she got back from picking up the keys to the new apartment and had lunch Kim did a little admin before joining an call about rolling out a project Kim had been working on for the past few months. The call was with a vendor and went over how it will be implemented. It was great!

She then worked on booking interviews and updating job descriptions.

Evening

Curtis watched hockey and Kim finished up some work and then we had sausages and mash for dinner!

We ate and watched some TV as well as discussed which things we might start taking over to the new apartment.

We went back to the new apartment after dinner to take over the desk we bought. It was so nice and quiet and the elevators were no issue at all, unlike our current place.

We then went to the liquor store and bought some prosecco and a few other bits as it’s our 10 year anniversary tomorrow!

Place 72 – Day 559: Vancouver, BC – We Definitely Have A New Apartment!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had his Norwegian lesson in the morning which went incredibly well! He had a great conversation that flowed naturally.

After that, he had back to back meetings. The first was a project update meeting and the second was to understand some issues for a team and make a plan of how to resolve those.

Once that meeting was done and Kim was done with her meeting, we took our lunch break and used it to go to the apartment we were offered just to make sure it’s what we want…which it was! The landlord was amazing and the space was even more perfect then we thought.

We verbally agreed to sign and got all the paperwork to sort out!

For some of the afternoon, Curtis looked up about swapping internet providers to save some money at the new apartment, as well as hired a moving company as we are super lazy and can’t be bothered to do it ourselves.

We got that done and looked over the lease agreement and contract etc.

Kim’s Day

Kim worked in a few documents to be ready for meetings for the day. She then joined a recruitment meeting to discuss one departments needs for the next few months. Kim was able to get a great idea of the roles needed and how to put together the job descriptions for them.

She then presented in the weekly meeting before joining the weekly project huddle.

After the viewing Kim did a little training with her new teammate and made sure that they have the right log ins and accesses. She then had a meeting with another teammate to go over documents that they have been working on.

To finish the day Kim did a little admin and then popped out to a shop to pick up something that had been delivered. It turns out that it hasn’t been delivered, so Kim went to another shop for some things for dinner and then headed home.

Evening

When Kim finished work, we made some food (just some seasoned chicken in a wrap with cheese, BBQ sauce and mayo) then we went out to the supermarket to do our shop.

Once we got back, we took out the bins and then we looked at some additional furniture we will need for our new apartment, most notably a desk and chair each, as we’ll each have dedicated office areas, which is exciting!

Curtis also bought himself a monitor to work and play games on.

We relaxed for what was left of the evening…it was a busy one!

Place 72 – Day 557: Vancouver, BC – A Day of Playing Games

We woke up at the same time as yesterday and got ourselves ready to go to another viewing.

We got to the viewing and took a look around. We weren’t massively impressed, to be honest, it was mostly just ok.

We left here and went to the place we got breakfast yesterday to get another one today! As well as our croissant and coffee, we got a cinnamon bun to share as they always looked so good. It was actually pretty nice.

For some of the day, we watched TV and got some tax documents done.

For most of the afternoon and evening we played some games which was super fun!

We eventually got pretty hungry so made another of the Hello Fresh meals, which was vegetarian and the best one yet. It was a Greek inspired dish with chickpeas and vegetables with a tasty sauce. Very delicious.

We watched TV and Kim had a bath to round out the day.

Place 72 – Day 271: Vancouver, BC – We Moved!

We were up at a fairly good time to get the apartment ready for moving as best we could.

We walked up to Home Depot to get a few things we needed and then went to pickup our U-Haul.

We got to the U-Haul place but our self pickup wasn’t working so we had to call support for them to assist.

We eventually got our van and drove back to our apartment to pickup the sofa.

We had to sell the sofa as it was too big, so we took it to the buyer!

We then went from there out to Burnaby where we picked up a new, smaller, vintage sofa which is super comfy!

We then drove back to the apartment and loaded as much as could into the van.

We drove to our new apartment and parked in the loading bay and got unloading!

It took us quite a bit of time, but that was the bulk of the items in.

Unfortunately, our bed cannot be dismantled enough and we don’t think it will fit into any transport easily or fit in the elevator! We therefore left the bed at the old place (which we still technically occupy for the next couple of weeks) and we will be sleeping on mattress until we can get a new bed frame.

We had to go back and get another load of items and load those into the new apartment.

We then took the U-Haul back and went and got the car to do a couple of smaller rounds of deliveries.

In total, it took us around 8/9 hours to get it all in!

We then started unpacking and Curtis plugged in the WiFi router, but it didn’t seem to work! After doing some testing for a while, it definitely didn’t work so he contacted the company and they will come and fix tomorrow between 13:00-15:00, so no work for Curtis until it is fixed tomorrow.

We got a lot of stuff unpacked but then got very hungry, at 22:00, so walked to our favourite pizza place (it’s about a 5 minute walk now, so very dangerous!) And got some pizza and had that with some wine.

We got the bed (mattress) made and finished our wine whilst getting a few other things packed, but we were so tired so just had to sleep.

We can show off the apartment tomorrow when we get it all unpacked, but we really like it so far!

Place 72 – Day 270: Vancouver, BC – The Final Packing & Dismantling!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had a very busy and productive day that went fast! After his usual admin, he joined Zoom’s weekly webinar which was very interesting and helpful. After that, and for most of the day around doing tickets, Curtis started and completed a part of his new project, which was to review some options and decide if the company should use the settings/policies to improve the security of the internal IT systems or not. After work, Curtis cleared out a few cupboards and got some things ready and packed.

Kim’s Day

Today started with guided meditation as part of mental health awareness month. It was very interested and kim enjoyed it. She of thinking of adding into the odd yoga time. After meditation Kim hosted the mid week catch up. It was a fair few different faces which was good.Kim then headed into the office, really early for normal because she had a meeting. On the way she had a good catch up with her colleague. Once she arrived Kim got all of the marketing stock ready for her meeting. She then went through the stock that there is with the director of marketing and they started making loose plans for where it will live and who will be looking after it. After the meeting Kim set up another meeting to go over the stock with someone else from marketing and someone from HR to look into things further.Kim then went through emails and caught up with that. She also arranged a courier for someone for Friday. While she was organising her emails the people to do the renovations arrived, so Kim showed them around and left them to it as she had a call to join. After the call Kim updated her log for the mailing and tried calling FedEx but had no luck. Kim then had her 1:1 that was cut short due to Kim being needed in office for decisions with the renovations and the building maintenance came up to show Kim a few things about the kitchen area.Kim then called FedEx again and was able to get some help with a booking she was trying to make. Due to Kim not giving someone their charger when they picked up their new laptop earlier in the day Kim had to arrange to have it sent out, so she booked that and then organised a FedEx for a laptop going out to someone else.Kim kept herself busy by organising some things around the office while she waited for the courier to come by. After a while she called them and found out it was booked after the cut off time for today so Kim has arranged for it to be picked up from her home tomorrow morning before the move. It did mean that Kim was stalling working from the office for no reason which was a shame! So she dropped the other package off to FedEx and went home.

The Final Packing & Dismantling!

We spent all evening packing up and dismantling! We got the bed dismantled and then packed up everything from the cupboards and sides. We now have pretty much everything ready to throw in the Uhaul tomorrow and move in to our new apartment!

Place 72 – Day 269: Vancouver, BC – 1 Year in Vancouver!

One Year Here!

We have been living in Vancouver for 1 year as of today! It’s just 269 days as we have had trips elsewhere during our stay, but we moved here this time last year! It’s flown by!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had another slower start to the morning, but did a ticket which took an hour and a lot of project admin during his team meeting.

Once that was done, Curtis went with Kim to clear out the storage locker downstairs and move the majority of it into the car to take to the new apartment.

Curtis spent some time trying to figure something out, but didn’t make much progress, and then went have lunch.

After lunch, Curtis did a few more tickets and then that was the end of the day!

Curtis packed up his remaining clothes, getting ready for moving!

After Curtis packed up, he emptied the dishwasher and played some games.

Kim’s Day

Kim spent the morning catching up on emails. On the way into the office Kim dropped the car off at the new apartment so she can put some stuff into the storage locker after work.

Once Kim got into the office she spent some time organising her desk and getting things ready. She then spent a bit of time reaching out to other people about mailing things.

Kim had reached out to the building to see if they would be able to let her borrow some tools or help Kim out a wire hole through the back of a cabinet. Someone showed up today and was able to sort it out. The drill Kim tried it with last week was not up to the task. It was perfect and Kim spend some time setting up her game station for people to enjoy when they are back in the office.

One of the things that Kim has been putting off is rehoming some of the stationary she has removed from the kitchen cupboards. She started with envelopes and folders and moved those to where the other few envelopes are stored. Giving her more space for the rest of the stuff that she has to put away.

After work Kim went and picked up a wardrobe orgnaised for the new apartment. She then went to empty the car, and being smart Kim decided not to use the elevators and took the stairs to the parking floors. Except she didn’t. What Kim managed to do was get locked in a stairwell because the doors lock after you and cannot be opened from the inside! So she had to call the front desk / security to come and rescue her. After that she decided to bail and just go home. She will empty the car on the move in day.

Getting Packed Up

We got a few more things packed in the evening, but dinner was the priority!

Curtis had some Swedish meatballs and Kim had some chicken sausages, along with potatoes, carrots & peas.

Whilst we were making dinner, 2 police cars and 2 police vans arrived outside our apartment and they were arresting someone on a bike, which was a bit of entertainment!

We watched some TV and did a bit more packing up, and we don’t have too much more to do.
