Place 72 – Day 884: Vancouver, BC – SPUD

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had a first day IT orientation at 09:00 and the person was very lovely!

Shortly after, Curtis had a team meeting followed by helping someone get their computer working as it should.

Curtis had yet another meeting with his team, then lunch, then he had a project to get done. That project only ended up taking 45 minutes which was excellent!

The rest of the afternoon was admin, tickets and also getting another computer working correctly for someone.

Curtis played some games whilst Kim had her evening meeting and then went up to the shop to get some chicken. We had received an order from spud.ca today, which is a very environmentally friendly supermarket that delivers (we had a discount code, so thought we’d try!) But the chicken was frozen and we needed some for tonight, so Curtis went to get some.

Kim’s Day

Kim started her week with a team meeting to get updates and see if anyone in the team needs help with any projects. She then joined a recruitment meeting to discuss a couple of roles that are open and the next steps for them.

In the afternoon Kim had an interview and she joined the review after to discuss what is happening next and how it went. They also discussed a small event that will be happening.

She then went on to update some paperwork with a couple of colleagues. To end the day Kim caught up with a couple of hiring managers to review the candidates who have applied for roles. It was a productive and fun evening!

Evening

For dinner, we had lemon pesto couscous with chicken & vegetables. Delicious! It was another recipe we kept from our Hello Fresh box a while ago.

We ate that and watched some TV together for the evening.

Place 72 – Day 881: Vancouver, BC – Fancy New Coffee!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had yet another very busy day!

He spent more time trying to fix someone’s laptop remotely, with the help of a colleague, and that was all throughout the day.

At 11:00, Curtis had a team meeting about the team strategy and then he did some tickets and security work until having lunch.

After lunch, it was time for another team meeting the review the work done over the last 2 weeks.

Curtis went to pickup his new coffee from the post office after this, which was luckily just a 5 minute walk away, and then he got home and made a cup of one of the new bags of coffee! He has bought a subscription in which they roast and send 3 new bags of coffee each month (if you want it each month). This is exciting as it gives Curtis new coffee to try and it’s fun, too. Curtis cleaned out the coffee grinder and made an Americano with the new coffee, which he made pretty well and really enjoyed it!

Curtis had a project to finish up in the late afternoon, which he did, and then it was relax time. Kim was still out, so Curtis played some games.

Kim’s Day

Kim was due to have a meeting heavy day and then two of her big meetings were moved to another day so Kim was able to really crack on and get a lot of admin done! She first started by popping out to grab coffees before sitting down and working on a project. She reached out to people and collected information from them and she also managed to get a lot of HR paperwork done.

He had a couple of smaller meetings and then she joined an interview and had a quick chat after.

Kim then worked on the internal work space, similar to the Wiki at her last company and started giving it a make over! She then popped out to collect some things from a store with colleague. They then went for a mini masked walk and it was lovely!

On a she got back Kim worked on the Wiki style project a bit more and she sent out some paperwork!

Evening

It was takeaway day today, so we found a place just down the road and went to pick up.

Curtis had a starter of wagu beef dip sliders and then a main of mac and cheese with braised rib. Kim had sweet chilli chicken bites as a starter and then some Cajun chicken tacos with fries.

Curtis couldn’t eat all of his mac and cheese and Kim couldn’t eat her fries, but we were defiantly well fed!

The rest of the evening was us in a food coma, relaxing and watching TV.

Place 72 – Day 864: Vancouver, BC – Sofa Is Built & Registered For Vaccine!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis went to the office in the morning and had to setup 2 laptops, as well as find equipment to send out to the new hires.

The office is running low on equipment before they get an order, so finding some items was a bit of a challenge.

Curtis finished that up at about 12:00 and then did some tickets whilst he waited for someone to arrive to collect a monitor.

Once that person was gone, Curtis had a meeting with a colleague to discuss a process and then once he was done with that meeting, he walked home and had some lunch.

After lunch, he had to generate some reports for someone and had some tickets to deal with which took him nicely to the end of the day.

Kim’s Day

Kim had a day full of back to back meetings and interviews! In the morning Kim had her team meeting to go over the plan for the week. She went from this into an interview, then straight into the weekly meeting and then into a second interview. She then had a meeting with the hiring managers to discuss the interviews. It was a really productive and interesting morning!

To start the afternoon Kim had a meeting about planning and next steps for a project. It was so interesting and it turns out Kim was approaching it all the wrong way, she learnt so much!

For a good chunk of the afternoon Kim worked with her teammate on setting up interviews and sending out paperwork. She then had a chat with another teammate before heading out to the new apartment to continue building the sofa. She also had a great chat with a friend while she did the final bits to the sofa.

Sofa Is Built & Registered For Vaccine!

Before work this morning, we registered for our notification to get a vaccine! We don’t get a vaccine for a while, but a new registration site went live so you can get instructions and a code for when you can get a vaccine.

This makes it feel just that little bit closer!

After work, Kim went over to the apartment to complete the sofa as the items we were missing arrived in the mail and we now have a constructed sofa, which is great.

Kim chatted with a friend after that and then headed back to our current apartment so we could have some dinner.

We ate delicious lemon chicken!

We got notice that there will be a viewing tomorrow, which is the first one with the new owners. We’ve been enjoying not having any, and our final week is the worst possible time, but what can we do. That’ll be happening tomorrow evening but maybe we get out for an evening walk.

Place 72 – Day 559: Vancouver, BC – We Definitely Have A New Apartment!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had his Norwegian lesson in the morning which went incredibly well! He had a great conversation that flowed naturally.

After that, he had back to back meetings. The first was a project update meeting and the second was to understand some issues for a team and make a plan of how to resolve those.

Once that meeting was done and Kim was done with her meeting, we took our lunch break and used it to go to the apartment we were offered just to make sure it’s what we want…which it was! The landlord was amazing and the space was even more perfect then we thought.

We verbally agreed to sign and got all the paperwork to sort out!

For some of the afternoon, Curtis looked up about swapping internet providers to save some money at the new apartment, as well as hired a moving company as we are super lazy and can’t be bothered to do it ourselves.

We got that done and looked over the lease agreement and contract etc.

Kim’s Day

Kim worked in a few documents to be ready for meetings for the day. She then joined a recruitment meeting to discuss one departments needs for the next few months. Kim was able to get a great idea of the roles needed and how to put together the job descriptions for them.

She then presented in the weekly meeting before joining the weekly project huddle.

After the viewing Kim did a little training with her new teammate and made sure that they have the right log ins and accesses. She then had a meeting with another teammate to go over documents that they have been working on.

To finish the day Kim did a little admin and then popped out to a shop to pick up something that had been delivered. It turns out that it hasn’t been delivered, so Kim went to another shop for some things for dinner and then headed home.

Evening

When Kim finished work, we made some food (just some seasoned chicken in a wrap with cheese, BBQ sauce and mayo) then we went out to the supermarket to do our shop.

Once we got back, we took out the bins and then we looked at some additional furniture we will need for our new apartment, most notably a desk and chair each, as we’ll each have dedicated office areas, which is exciting!

Curtis also bought himself a monitor to work and play games on.

We relaxed for what was left of the evening…it was a busy one!

Place 72 – Day 433: Vancouver, BC – Information Obtained!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis got ready and then went into the office as he had some things to do there.

Firstly, Curtis got some things out of the storage area and then started setting up a laptop for someone.

Someone came to the office to pickup som IT equipment, so Curtis met him downstairs in the lobby to give him these items.

After that, Curtis finished setting up the laptop as well as getting a monitor and all the required items for a new starter into a box ready to give to them tomorrow.

Once Curtis did all of this, he headed back home and had some lunch.

After lunch, Curtis caught up on emails and tickets and then the day was done.

Kim’s Day

Kim spent the morning completing paperwork for her new job and researching things for permanent residency. She finally found some information she needed so Kim and Curtis can start getting their UK education verified and assessed for the PR application.

In the afternoon Kim had a great facetime call with her sister and it was amazing! She misses her so much. Then Kim went out for a little walk as she was starting to feel frustrated with the PR process and how close to the wire the application might be, so it made sense to get outside as there is nothing Kim can do right now. Once they get the education process started Kim will book the english tests that they need to take, then once they have the english test done they can finally start the actual process, and that will be good.

Evening

Kim made peri peri chicken with rice for dinner which was spicy but tasty!

We watched some TV and played some game for the rest of the evening.

Place 72 – Day 390: Vancouver, BC – The Megadesk Lives!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis did some tickets and then at 10:00 he had a 1 hour long Norwegian lesson! He had a really good time doing that and again, as like last time, it was a full Norwegian conversation which was excellent.

After this, there were a lot of tickets for Curtis to do and then after lunch he walked to the office.

Whilst at the office, Curtis noticed a server had an error on it! Luckily, it’s not fatal, but some parts need to be fixed or replaced.

Curtis got a new monitor from the stock room and got that ready for someone to pickup, which is why he was at the office.

The person collected the monitor and Curtis went back home again, but with a stop at a Starbucks to meet with Kim briefly and to get a coffee.

Curtis did a bit of admin when he got home and then was done for the day.

Kim’s Day

Kim spent the morning labelling peoples desks that she will clear out. For some she was able to use their instructions over messenger to find their desk and for others Kim had to call them and be directed.

She also took some time to draft up some emails she will send out over the coming weeks as had a brainwave of communication that she wants to say. So she quickly wrote it all down while she could remember!

In the afternoon Kim moved all the monitors from the desks where they were being stored and moved them to another area in the office so she could work on setting up the first couple of mega desks.

About halfway through reorganising the furniture Kim went and met the vendor for the plants to let her into the office and Kim took a little break a while in to go and meet Curtis for a coffee.

Once Kim had removed all the furniture she started measuring out the distance between the banks of desks and also put a few of the drawers that are not being used under the desk for storage. Kim then emptied a few of the desks and stored those items under the new desk.

Once Kim finished the desks she worked on emptying other people’s desks. She cleared the tables, put everything into their drawers, labelled the items and tagged the table so she knew it had been done. It was a very successful day and Kim is happy with how quickly the desks come together when the spaces is empty.

Evening

When Kim got home, we took out the recycling and we then had some homemade tomato and mushroom pasta!

We watched some TV and played some games, but not much as it was almost 21:00 by the time we finished eating.

Place 72 – Day 41: Vancouver,BC – We Enjoy Our Jobs!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis arrived at work and had 2 people waiting for him before he could even turn on his laptop.

The first person had forgotten their laptop at home, so Curtis had to find a temporary replacement and set that up for them.

Curtis then had to sort out the second person who had some issues with their monitor not connecting to their laptop. When Curtis went to investigate, he realised that the cable connecting the two had slightly come out of the monitor, so when he plugged it back in, it worked. Nice and easy. This was all before 09:00!

Curtis had a really busy morning, but it was great! Lots of different things to do as well as some incidents Curtis was able to resolve.

The afternoon was much quieter so it was some regular tasks and onboarding that Curtis did to keep himself busy, before walking home.

Kim’s Day

Today Kim was so busy and she loved it.

Kim got into the office and started with a few of the receptionist tasks to start her day and then went and settled down in the HR area to practise a few more tasks there.

Just as she got comfortable Kim was invited out for a coffee and handover of some events stuff with two colleagues. So they went to a nearby coffee shop, grabbed a drink and pastry and ironed out some details. It was lovely to get out of the office and sit outside while still working!

When she got back Kim spent the morning between the 2 desks balancing HR back office stuff and front desk project stuff. Kim then attended a meeting for some more HR help and set up a few other meetings for the afternoon. A big part of the project Kim is working on takes place over the weekend so now is the time to get cracking!

Kim then treated herself to a whole 15 minute lunch break and spent it in the sun on the roof with some of her colleagues.

Kim was then back in the office and setting up for a meeting with people from our other offices. It was great to get there opinions on the project and try to answer any questions they may have.

Kim then had 15 minutes between that meeting and her next, which was back to HR for more training on the back office stuff. Kim had some guidance on one part and was then left to try one on her own! She only made 2 minor mistakes that were easily fixed, so it was a great success.

She went from that meeting straight into another meeting about the project! This was great as Kim and her counterpart in IT were really able to explain the project to people and the next steps we were taking.

After this meeting the IT person suggested that they sit down and finalise the details with the project for an hour or so! It’s really nice to have someone who actually knows about the project a lot more than Kim does!

By the time that was done Kim only had another 30 minutes left in the day! It just flew by! So she did the 3rd and final bit for HR and it went really well. Kim sent out one more email and finished at 5 on the dot.

Kim is really enjoying her new role, it has lots of challenges to pick up and great support from her teammates! She is feeling very happy and excited for the coming year!

Dog Park!

We met each other from work and walked home in the beautiful sunshine.

We got home and Kim made a delicious pork meal, with a creamy mushroom sauce, potato hasselback & balsamic vegetables.

Once we finished eating, we walked the other way around the seawall at the perfect time of day where the sun was going down, so it was very beauiful!

We got to the dog park and Kim went in to say “hi” to the dogs in there and then we walked back home to watch TV for the rest of the evening.
