Place 72 – Day 138: Vancouver, BC – Back To Training!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis got to work and there were a few new tickets to take care of.

A couple of these were regarding a recent migration that has started and they were requesting help, so Curtis spent a while dealing with those today.

Along with that, Curtis did a few tickets from people walking up to him and he also made a lot of progress with the project he is working on. He’s nearly finished that!

Curtis walked home in the rain and then did a bit of cleaning around the apartment.

Kim’s Day

Kim started her day by organising herself! She sorted and submitted some expenses from months ago, which was great. She then prepared 2 packages and took them to their separate drop off points just before lunch.

After lunch, Kim started the afternoon by running around giving out ice lollies. She then spent the rest of the afternoon working throughout the backlog of stuff she has put off for months. She also took a little time to look into a few things for next years holiday party!

2 Classes

For the first time in what felt like forever, Kim had 2 pole classes back-to-back and she loved it! It felt great for her to get back out and do some exercise.

Curtis did some more cleaning and admin at home whilst Kim was out.

Once Kim got home, we watched some TV and that was our evening.

Curtis’ leaving work around 15:00 tomorrow as its NYE and the office closes then!

Place 72 – Day 171: Vancouver, BC – The Migration Is (pretty much) Done!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis got to work and was very wet! The rain came down on the way to the office, so he had to sit with wet clothes on for a few hours, which was pleasant!

Most of the things Curtis had booked in for the day were cancelled by the time he got in, so it freed him up quite a bit.

He was able to use that time to catch up on migration news as well as all other required information he missed whilst away.

Curtis was able to do some other things other than project work, such as tickets and some admin he had to get done, but he did still do a lot of project work.

Curtis’ team had a meeting at the end of the day to discuss the project work for the last couple of weeks, positives, negatives and other information.

After the meeting, Curtis had the last migration to kick off and then an offboard to complete before walking home.

Kim’s Day

Kim had a whirlwind of a day! She hardly stopped! The first thing Kim did was attempt to catch up on emails from while she was off.

Shortly after this she and a colleague headed out to a dollar store to pick things up for Halloween. They also grabbed a few items for the Monday night drinks while they were in.

When Kim got back she went to start on the fridge clean out, but then there was a large delivery so Kim had to go through and organise that. Then the pizzas arrived, with no issues!

Kim popped the pizzas ready on the table and ran out to start the fridge clean, she emptied out the fridge and left things on the side so people can claim them if needed.

Kim also compiled everything from the freezers into one draw to allow for a check in in a few days to go through that and empty it.

Once everyone grabbed their pizza Kim kicked off the monthly social talks. They went really smoothly with people coincidentally having very similar or linked talks.

After the talks Kim went back in to finish the fridge clean. She gave the shelves a scrub, put an old shelf back in one of the fridges and binned all of the food left on the side.

Kim then managed to have roughly an hour to set up for Diwali and arrange everything for next week. She started by putting together most of the orders and having them ready to be checked later and sent out.

Kim then helped set up the dewali celebrations by putting out Mandals for people to either colour in or paint.

There was also Henna, tea light holder painting and food!

It was a great little event, Kim managed to grab a samosa before heading back to her desk to continue on with planning for next week.

Kim spent the rest of her day, well into 2 hours after she should have, setting up for the next week.

Kim collected all the items that they might need from flip charts, to pens to whiteboard wipes. Kim even built a new flip chart that may or may not be missing a piece, no one is currently sure. Kim also drew up a new floor plan for the Monday night drinks where the took up some space in front of a fridge to allow for the best space and fridge space possible. Kim then eventually went over the orders with a colleague and got them sent and sorted.

On the way home Kim stopped by H&M and found the perfect top for her routine! That was a massive win. Kim then went to buy a hairband of some kind but it was so busy she bailed!

Kims training this evening was shocking. She wasn’t able to do any of the moves so ended up just getting ready and having a chat with a co owner! Kim then nipped to the supermarket to pick some things up then went home.

Evening

Kim got home quite late from work, but did come bearing gifts!

She brought home some wine and some ‘fancy’ cheese for us to have for dinner at some point and she bought some meats to have with it.

We had some admin to do in the evening, so we did that and went to bed.

Place 72 – Day 170: Vancouver, BC – Short Trip Away!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis did a bit of work as soon as he woke up.

He had to check the migrations he started overnight and, unsurprisingly, some of it had not worked.

Curtis got to work and had to figure out what the problem was and how to prevent it happening again. Curtis spent all day answering questions post migration as well as trying to get the migration for one team’s folder in particular to work, but it did not.

As he couldn’t get it to work, he investigated the issue and figured out the problem, which should be mitigated by completing the transfer on Friday instead.

A second set of migrations had to take place today as well, but they went very smoothly, which was excellent!

Curtis had to help with desk moves at his office and then headed out at 16:30 to walk up and meet Kim.

Kim’s Day

When Kim got in she started on her reconciliations straight away. This was only for 30 minutes as she and a colleague agreed to run to the liquor store to place a larger order to deliver for Friday for the function on Monday.

After this they caught up on some time to go over a few things like a stationary order and what to change the catering from and to.

They also went over a stationary order where Kim order stuff for all of the upcoming events, pencils and water colours for Diwali, a flip chart for the meeting next week and some other office items.

As one of Kim’s teammates is due to go on maternity leave soon the team arranged a group manicure or pedicure followed by lunch.

It was so nice to relax and talk about everything not work related. It was extra funny because in the nail place they had Jack Whitehalls TV show where he holidays with his dad on and everyone found it hilarious!

After lunch Kim got straight back into reconciliations to try and sort all of that out, but once she finished one card that required a few phone calls, she realised she had to sort a few other things out before she left.

Kim then ordered all the upcoming food for this week including the weekly Thursday pizzas and the monthly social talks pizzas.

She then wrote up a few emails and sent them off before she leaves for 2 days! She met Curtis downstairs to start their holidays!

Flying To Portland!

We met at Kim’s work and then walked to the train station.

Kim was able to get a seat, which was a win on such a busy train!

The train took 45 minutes to get us to the airport, but that gave us perfect time to chat about our day.

We got to the airport and found the correct check-in area, but luckily we had already checked in, so we just went right to security.

The terminal was absolutely empty, so security was fast, but then we got to US immigration, which was also fast, luckily!

There weren’t many people in the departures either, so we just wandered around.

There wasn’t much to see or do, so we just sat at the game and chilled, waiting for the flight.

We got 2 trams to get from the airport to our hotel, which is in downtown Portland.

We got checked in and went and got some quick food as we were quite hungry and then we went back to the hotel to chill!

We’re in Portland for a concert, which is tomorrow, so we have most of the day to do stuff tomorrow and then a bit of time on Thursday morning before we fly back home.

Place 72 – Day 169: Vancouver, BC – The Migration Has Started!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis spent a lot of his day getting the final preparations done for the migration he had to start today.

He had a team meeting and then the migration started at 15:00!

The way he was going to do it wasn’t working and then he tried a few other ways and it still didn’t work.

Curtis found out that Microsoft had recently purchased a company that do just what Curtis was looking for and when he tried it (once he got home and was still trying the other ways for a while) it seemed to work.

There were a few other files that had to be done a different way and Curtis eventually figured it out. He stopped working around 21:30 but the migration will run overnight and hopefully complete by the morning!

Kim’s Day

Kim started her week playing catch up from last week.

She began with booking some travel for a new starter to come out in a week. She was also answering a lot of phone calls this morning.

When she wasn’t able to transfer someone through she was eventually told to go to hell and was hung up on. So that was delightful.

Kim also put away all of the shopping a fruit that arrived.

Kim then orgnaised catering for 2 mini events coming up next week.

Earlier in the day someone told Kim that they had ordered pizza, when it arrived the delivery man complained to Kim that there was no tip!

Kim tried to explain that she didn’t make the order but the driver would not give her the time of day.

Kim isn’t too sure what she did recently to bug to random people in 1 morning but hey ho!

Can’t let it get to you! Kim then spent some time listening to her phone messages and got caught up on that.

She then spent some of the afternoon planning the layout of one of the catered events, she drew up a floor plan and devised how the bar should be set up.

At the end of the day Kim ran to the storage to pick up the Halloween decorations so they can take inventory of what is available and what is needed.

Getting Ready For Our Trip

Kim was out training and whilst Curtis was working, he was also packing and getting ready for our short trip away which starts after work tomorrow!

Kim got home and we watched a little bit of TV and then headed to bed.

Place 72 – Day 163: Vancouver, BC – Christmas Invites!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis arrived at work and spent an extra 15 minutes more doing admin as it seemed there was a lot to do for some reason!

Curtis had a team meeting at 10:00 which was brief.

Curtis spent a lot of the day (more than he planned) figuring out things and planning for his project.

This is mostly done and ready for next week, minus a few things, so that’s exciting!

Curtis had a chat with a colleague to discuss the project and let him know a few points as Curtis is actually away for the project.

There were a few other things Curtis had to take care of, but the day went very fast.

Kim’s Day

Kim called up and sorted out a hotel issue that occured over the weekend, which is never a great way to start a week. On the bright side, at least people now know where not to stay and the person in question is now fully booked in and all sorted.

After this Kim took 2 new starters on their building tour and got them all set up and sorted.

Kim spent most of the rest of the morning saving accounting thins, mainly reciepts and invoices. She also took a lot of calls!

Kim and her colleague nipped out to pick up a cake for another teammate who has flown in from the states.

Then for the rest of the afternoon we kept trying to ensure everyone was around to wish her a happy birthday, it took four attempts but eventually everyone was there and we wished her all a happy birthday and it was lovely.

Around trying to sing happy birthday Kim sorted out a lot of the details for Halloween, she put time in a teammates calendar to ensure that they have time to go through the current decorations have time to buy more and have time to set up. Kim also sent out all the calendar invites for people so they can know where they should be!

While she was on an events role Kim started doing the wordy bit of the formal invites for the holiday parties. She copied a template from last year but has truly made it her own. She will finish this tomorrow.

Back To Training

Kim went back to training tonight after the weekend and she was very happy about getting to go back!

Kim class went relatively well, she is still a little lackluster from getting over the cold and hopes that’s why she struggled today. She managed to get a full run through of the routine, however she thought she had time to fill, but totally ran out of time which was not ideal!

Curtis did some cleaning around the apartment and then when Kim got back we watched Great British Bake Off before sleeping.

Place 72 – Day 151: Vancouver, BC – Free Cocktail!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had some bad new relating to his project this morning, and it only got worse!

The migration started early today, so it was a lot of answering questions etc regarding that.

Curtis did a lot of tickets today, though, which he feels he hasn’t done much of in the last few weeks, so it was quite nice to get back to it.

There were a few things he had to do using PowerShell, which is similar to coding, so it was good to use his brain for that.

In the afternoon, there was an environment quiz, which Curtis wasn’t part of, but as a participation prize there were cocktails! Curtis got one as they were spare, so that was a win!

He spent some time watching some people try and open a wine bottle without a bottle opening. It was very entertaining!

Curtis left for the day and met with Kim to walk home.

Kim’s Day

Kim and her colleague have really set aside time to get the nittygritty things done. Most of Kims morning was spent in a Health and Safety meeting going over the communications, plans for certain meetings and drawing up a timeline of when we want to get things done for. It was a great meeting and followed on nicely from the others that have happened previously.

Kim then spent a good amount of time going back over checked, but not completed, emails and completing them. This involved saving a lot of invoices.

After lunch Kim chopped up some melon for everyone to enjoy.

In the afternoon Kim continued with her catch up but also booked some travel for an incoming new starter so that kept kim entertained for a while.

In the mid afternoon Kim got a craving for a doughnut so she nipped out, picked up a box of 6 and 2 things of lemon loaf for her and the team to enjoy. Then they all came to her desk and sneakily munched on nice Tims doughnuts before going back to work! It was a nice way to hang out for a few mintues!

Positive Training!

Our evening was fairly standard. Kim went off to training but further away today. Curtis didn’t really do anything whilst Kim was out.

Kim wasn’t sure if training would be worth it, but it really was! She is starting to fill in the gaps and elongate combinations to make sense!

Once Kim got back, we watched Bake Off and then headed to bed.

Place 72 – Day 123: Vancouver, BC – Shoreline Cleanup

Curtis’ Day

Curtis made further headway with his project, investigating how to setup the folder structure within it, as well as looking at the best ways to do permissions and best way to migrate.

After a while of doing this, Curtis did some tickets, helped a couple of people out around the office and then spent way longer than he thought he would collating a list of the top 10 most expensive software packages the company uses. This is to help them see where costs can be cut.

Lunch came around quickly and once that was done, Curtis donned some nice plastic gloves and along with his colleagues, headed out to pick up some litter! This used 2 hours of his volunteering time for the quarter, but it was quite fun, team building as well as very good for the environment.

All together, in around 2 hours, Curtis and his team collected 12 bags of trash!

For more on the shoreline cleanup, check out their website here – https://www.shorelinecleanup.ca/

As a reward, they all got an ice cream cone from McDonald’s.

Curtis got back to work, did a couple of things and then changed a total of 8 batteries in some uninteruptable power supplies, with the help of a colleague, which brought him to the end of the day.

Kim’s Day

This morning Kim had the second half of her new hire orientation so spent most of the morning at home, remotely in the meeting. After the meeting Kim called her friend back in the UK to congratulate him on passing his exam! Then Kim caught up on some emails from the morning and updated a game for tomorrow new hire meet and eat! She also placed the order forr todays pizza.
When she got in Kim continued to catch up on emails, focusing on going over the catering and making sure its all correct and up to date. The weekly pizza arrived so Kim popped that into the meeting and continued on with ad hoc tasks before having some of the leftover pizza with colleagues for lunch!
After lunch Kim and her teammate sat down to go over which reports they were each tackling for the project.

Then Kim organised a delivery to the Ontario office before having her 1-2-1. Somehow Kim has been with the company now for 3 months already! It has flown by. The 1-2-1 went really well and it was all good feedback from both sides, Kim is enjoying her job so much and it sounds like people are happy to have her about!

After the meeting Kim was late into another meeting, which she had totally forgotten about, so she sat down with another team mate to go over the remote meet and eat to ensure that they are both on the same page for tomorrow!

After those meetings Kim dropped the boxes off to FedEx and then a letter off to Canada post before heading back into the office to send out emails requesting info in regards to the reporting project.

NHL 20 Early Access

We chilled out when we got home and Curtis purchased EA Access, meaning he could access the new NHL game 7 days early!

Curtis played this for a while, and then we made spaghetti bolognese and watched some YouTube videos, followed by the newest Suits episode.

Place 49 – Day 363: Auckland – It’s Complete!

Curtis’ Day;

After arriving on site, Curtis went right to the machine he was exporting on and it had frozen at the same point it did yesterday, so he had to figure out another option.

Curtis got it sorted eventually, after a few hours. He then went to the person’s machine and set it up on there, so then that person was sorted!

After doing this, Curtis went across the road to the other site, where he had to setup 3 PCs. This took a little bit of time, but this eventually got done and that was it! The user migration has been done, but there are still files to transfer over next week, but the main bit is done.

Curtis headed home with bad traffic but he was taken another route home, too.

Both of us;

Once Kim was home too, we ended up accidentally having a nap! It was nice at the time, but after we woke up we felt awful!

We were still super tired, but we couldn’t be bothered to make any food, so we drove up to Glenfield Mall to get some donburi. Curtis had lemon pork & spicy teriyaki chicken. Kim had karage chicken as well as sweet chilli chicken.

We ate our dinner at home whilst watching the film Daddy’s Home 2, which we thoroughly enjoyed!

After the film, we watched some YouTube videos and then Kim spoke with Abbie for a couple of hours.

Place 49 – Day 361: Auckland – Wednesday Night Vietnamese Coffee

Curtis’ Day;

Curtis got to the client around the same time as previously and someone arrived shorty after to let him in.

In the morning, Curtis got something completed from yesterday and another completed from scratch, also.

At 10:30, Curtis had it planned to see someone and get their PC sorted, but they were not there, so he was unable to get that done until around 11:30. Unfortunately, this one took ages to configure itself, so it wasn’t done until 15:00.

After this, Curtis started another but then left around 16:00. Curtis’ colleague got one completed also so there are only a couple remaining to complete, which means it should be completed this week!

Curtis drove home, with little traffic.

Both of us;

We had dinner shortly after we were both home. Dinner was just leftovers from yesterday, but we added more BBQ sauce to the pork, which made it even more delicous!

After dinner, we sat and watched Blue Planet 2 but we both became tired around 19:00 which is too early, so we decided to go out. We drove to Takapuna, parked up and walk to Tok Tok, where we just wanted a Vietnamese coffee!

The restaurant was very busy, but we got a seat briefly and enjoyed our coffee.

We had some people sit next to us and we briefly chatted with them. They realised we were British so asked if we’ve enjoyed our time here and we chatted about it for a bit.

After our delicious coffee, we went back to the car but taking the long route so we could have a bit of a walk.

Once we got back home, we watched a bit more TV and then went to sleep!

Place 49 – Day 359: Auckland – Steady Progress

Curtis’ Day;

Curtis got to the client and his colleague was not there, but Curtis did get it around 07:20 which was earlier than usual for this client.

The day started with Curtis needing to finish a machine from Friday, which took roughly 2 hours to finish and then a few more minutes deliver to and train the user.

Curtis had the odd thing to do here and there after this until around 12:00 when he went to get a coffee and had a bit of a walk.

After this, Curtis was pretty full on until 15:00, but then he had a few things to help people with and, before he knew it, it was 16:20…so much for leaving at a decent time!

There wasn’t much traffic for Curtis on the way home. When he got back, he did the ironing and collected the laundry.

Both of us;

Kim got back and it was so hot that we needed some fresh air, so we went for a 30 minute walk. We used this time to chat about our days with each other.

We got home and were lazy so had pizza for dinner, with a side salad.

We watched some TV and that was the end of the day for us.
