Place 72 – Day 517: Vancouver, BC – Requirements Discussion & HR Things

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had a very busy morning with many questions and tickets being directed his way.

At 10:30, Curtis had a Norwegian lesson which went excellently and then he got back to many messages and tickets again.

Shortly after finishing his lesson, he had a meeting around a project to discuss requirements and ensure that everyone was on the same page. That went well and progress was made, which is terrific!

We had some lunch and then Curtis did some project work and managed to start and finish a project in an hour.

Kim’s Day

Kim started her day by continuing on with putting some of the HR documents on to the HR system as a template. She then joined the weekly meeting and provided updates for the department she is in.

After the meeting Kim wrote up a few things for her colleague and sent them over. She then joined a meeting to discuss a candidate, which went well.

In the afternoon Kim focused on finishing the HR paperwork she started earlier and also updated some other information on that system too.

Kim also managed to get a few things done for the facilities project.

Evening

Kim went out to the shop to get some wine for the dinner (and to drink a little, of course) and something from the pharmacy.

We made a mushroom and tomato pasta which we’ve not had for a while and it was excellent!

We ate and relaxed for the evening and had a few discussions with the agent who is selling our apartment with regards to what we need to do etc.

Place 72 – Day 515: Vancouver, BC – Apartment Being Sold!

We woke up and had some cereal for breakfast and then went out for a walk.

We went and got another hot chocolate from the hot chocolate festival. This time it was from Peaked Pie which is an Australian pie shop.

The hot chocolate was a lamington flavour, which, if you’re unaware, is an Australian chocolate and coconut cake!

Curtis got a flat white too, which was excellent!

We had a walk for another hour or two and then headed back home.

We then met our landlord and her agent at our apartment. We were told yesterday that it was being sold, which shouldn’t affect us, but obviously there are things that need to be done, such as photos being taken and viewings, so we have a lot of cleaning to do and many of our evenings/days will be taken up with viewings and cleaning.

Once that meeting was done, we went to the shop to get ourselves some food for the week, though we didn’t need to get to much. We also stopped in at Canadian Tire to get a storage box that we can throw things in when the viewings happen.

Once we got home, Kim re-tried making the potato, mushroom & peas meal we had a couple of weeks ago.

It was delicious!

We ate that and watched some TV, then we played some games and watched a bit more TV.

Place 72 – Day 509: Vancouver, BC – Work Permit Submitted!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had a few tickets and some questions for the morning, which kept him nice and busy, which also went around his team meeting.

Curtis also applied for his work permit which was exciting!

After work, Curtis played some games with a colleague whilst waiting for Kim to finish working.

Kim’s Day

In the morning Kim was so busy, but certainly felt like she had nothing to show for it! She was able to set up a lot of meetings for the week, make good notes and generally make good preparations.

Just after midday Kim had a team meeting where they went over the facilities project and a few other HR things. After this meeting Kim had lunch and then she popped out for a meeting in regards to the facilities project.

Once Kim was home from the meeting she managed to get a few things done before having a meeting about candidates that have applied for a role with the company. It was really interesting and productive.

Towards the end of the day Kim finalised a survey and sent out an invite to a social event that will be happening next month.

Evening

Kim made another meal from her new cookbook which is jam and spice chicken drumsticks! They’re sweet and spicy which was delicious!

We watched some TV and played some games and then headed to bed.

Neither of us slept too great last night, so we wanted to get some good sleep!

Place 72 – Day 506: Vancouver, BC – Evening Laughs

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had a fairly busy morning with some tickets, a team meeting.

Once the morning was done, and so was lunch, Curtis did some training and then wrapped up the day with an offboard.

Curtis played a few games after working with a colleague.

Kim’s Day

Kim had a slow morning before joining a meeting to set up things in the HR system in a way that is more efficient and get a few hints and tips. After the call Kim prepared for her next meeting.

She then had a call with someone to go over candidates for a role that they are recruiting for. After they reviewed the candidates they went over the interview structure and questions to make sure all they would get all the right information and understanding of the applicants.

For the afternoon Kim worked on the document for the HR system, reviewed more candidates and set up a plan for the following week.

At the end of the day Kim had a chat with her new teammate to see how she was doing and just to catch up at the end of the week. It was great!

Evening

We ordered some Peruvian food as we wanted toast week but they were closed!

We atethat and watched some YouTube videos, followed by The Great Fat Quiz of Everything and we had a great laugh at that!

We watched some other TV and played some games.

Place 72 – Day 502: Vancouver, BC – Double Office Visit

Curtis’ Day

Curtis was up a little earlier today as he had a call with a new starter at 09:00. This call was an orientation to ensure they were setup and everything was working.

Once did that call, Curtis walked down to the office to setup a laptop and ship some equipment.

He completed this about 2/3 hours later and went home.

He got a couple of things sorted, answered some messages and tickets and then had lunch.

Right after lunch, Curtis had to go back to the office to meet someone to fix something urgent, which only took about 10 minutes!

He walked back home and finished a few things before playing some games with colleagues.

Kim’s Day

Over the break Kim had been sent a few reading materials that are useful for diversity and inclusion during recruitment and hiring, so thats how Kim started her day. She went through the reading materials and later in the day Kimberley reached out to a consultant that her previously company had worked with who provides inclusive and diversity training to get a few training sessions set up on a regular basis.

A new starter joined today so Kim had a short onboarding time set up with them and a colleague to help set them up. They had a mini onboarding just before the winter break but the time today was to ensure that they have all the accesses that they need and to see of they had any questions. The meeting wasn’t long enough so Kim arranged a meeting later in the day and the other two went to another meeting.

For the rest of the morning Kim did research on some things for an event coming up in a few weeks and then she was asked to catch up with her team. So they all joined a call to discuss the projects that are coming up, the recruitment and a nice quick post break catch up.

After that meeting Kim and her colleague went back to their other new teammate to finish their onboarding. Kim helped for a bit and then they went into more role specific stuff so Kim left to have some lunch.

After lunch Kim tried to fix a few things with the HR system, but had no luck. She then had to reach out to the work mobile company to update something and that took a while. For the rest of the afternoon Kim worked on the facilities project as she went back to square one just before the break.

Evening

We were going to have something different for dinner, but as Kim worked late, we just had frozen pizza.

After that, we watched some TV and played some games, all whilst trying not to fall asleep!

Place 72 – Day 496: Vancouver, BC – A Bank Meeting

We woke up at a decent time today, but we did sleep in today, especially compared to yesterday.

We had some toasties for breakfast and watched some TV.

After showering and getting ready, we remembered that we had a bank appointment to go to, so we went and did that. We were at the bank for about an hour or so, but in that time we got some things done which we need both for our PR application but also for some other things that we had needed for a while and just never got around to doing.

We got back home and had some pizza and a coffee and played some games.

After that, we made sausages, potato gratin, peas, carrots and gravy.

We ate that and went back to playing some Minecraft but then watched some TV.

There’s been rainfall warnings today, so the weather isn’t likely to get any better, so it’s unlikely we’ll be doing anything exciting (not that we can anyway!).

Place 72 – Day 489: Vancouver, BC – Late Night Shopping

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had a surprisingly busy day today!

He had to do a surprise offboard in the morning and then after that he had a project related meeting.

Curtis did some tickets up until lunch and then had an onboard to do for a contractor and there were some odd things he needed to do for that so it took some time.

In the late afternoon, he helped a few people with some password issues and then the day was done!

Kim’s Day

Today Kim joined the weekly meeting and gave a couple of updates! Technically, after the weekly meeting everyone has finished for the year, which is so lovely. However, Kim has a few more things to finish up so she sent out a few emails and made notes for the new year.

Around midday Kim popped out to the office to pick some things up to take to the CEO as she was picking something up from them. So she went from the office to their house, dropped things off and picked up the things that she needed.

Once she was home Kim had some lunch and relaxed for a bit before heading to a phone shop to get a contract and SIM for the company. She was also able to pick a number so Kim chose one that is perfect for the company.

After this she met up with a colleague to give them a card that had come in the post yesterday. They then went for a quick walk before someone from the office building called and asked Kim to pop in to check something. Once Kim was at her car they said she didn’t need to go in, so she went home and relaxed.

Evening

We tried to go shopping right after work, but realised how large the queue was, so we came back home and had some leftover stew for dinner!

We ate that, relaxed for a bit and then at 20:30 we went to the shop as we knew it would be pretty quiet.

We managed to get everything we needed and did it super fast!

We got back home and chilled for the rest of the night, though it felt weird as we usually get home around 18:00 from doing the shopping, not 21:45.

Place 72 – Day 488: Vancouver, BC – Morning Call

Morning Call

We woke up early as we were expecting a phone call from the UK.

A company we both worked for needed to call us to confirm it was us requesting some information, so we did that phone call, which didn’t take long, and got started with the day.

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had a team meeting and some tickets to get done in the morning.

He also helped someone with a few issues they had.

After lunch, Curtis had some more tickets as well as some admin for some people starting the company in the new year.

After work, Curtis played a few games with some colleagues and then played some until Kim got home.

Kim’s Day

Today Kim was in the office as she waa expecting a delivedy today. She spent a lot of her morning researching and comparing options for phones ahead of a meeting later in the day. She also updated notes for meetings for the week and familiarised herself with the information for the facilities project.

Around midday Kim joined a meeting with a couple of the executive team and the person supporting the facilities project where they discussed next steps and set up another in person meeting for tomorrow. There was a short break after this meeting before the final team meeting for the year. Kim asked a few questions and got approval for the phone plan that she had.

In the afternoon Kim updated the HR system with the time off feature and arranged meetings for tomorrow. She also spent a lot of time chasing a parcel that someone has sent to the office. Some other parcels arrived during the day, so she updated people to let them know that they had arrived. She also spent a lot of the afternoon ticking off smaller projects that had been pushed to one side.

Evening

We haven’t been to the shop yet, so we got some excellent pizza (as always) from Pizza Garden just up the road.

Kim picked Curtis up on her way home and then we ate some pizza!

We were tired from waking up early this morning, so we watched a bit of TV, played some games and headed to bed.

Place 72 – Day 477: Vancouver, BC – Showing Off Some Projects

Curtis’ Day

Curtis checked on someone this morning with regards to the email work he did yesterday for them.

It didn’t work! So he scheduled a time to try and fix it for them.

After this, Curtis had another email fix to do for someone, but with a different mailbox. He’ll need to do this with a couple of others too, but he’s testing it with this person first. This one seemed to go well, but only time shall tell!

Curtis then did the fix for the other person from the morning and then he discovered a new project through something someone was discussing in the company.

In the afternoon, Curtis did some security training which is company mandated, which was just watching some videos.

He did some other work and admin and then was done for the day.

Kim’s Day

Today Kim arranged for another chat with someone who had interviewed earlier in the week, as they had a couple of questions that came up after reviewing the interview and their application. So before that happened Kim hopped on a call with her colleague to go over the questions they wanted to ask. They both then joined the call and had a wonderful chat with the candidate.

After the chat Kim and her colleague called again to go over some information needed for the HR software. They updated all the missing fields in one section, which means the software is pretty much set up and ready to go.

Today Kim was also showing the CEO and other executive members the facilities project, so Kim headed out to the location, showed them the projects, informed them of ideas and answered any questions. Kim was so pleased with how it went as everyone seemed to be happy with the options.

Once Kim was home and had eaten lunch she organised the delivery of the laptop thats going out to a new starter. She also sent out some invites for the connect four tournament games next week.

For the rest of the day Kim worked on the quiz for the winter party! She added all the media and answers for the first 13 questions and then added an additional 10 questions! So she only has a few more to do before its finished!

Evening

We didn’t have much of a plan for dinner, so we just had some frozen pizza.

We watched some TV and played some games then Kim watched the remainder of her film she was watching whilst Curtis played some games.

Place 72 – Day 476: Vancouver, BC – PNP Received!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had a team.meeting at 09:30 and then after that he had to remove 2 mailbox permissions for someone and then just on a call with them and make some changes on their email.

After he did that, he did the same with another person.

Curtis then had to reach out to someone to figure out their equipment for when they start in the new year, as well as obtain their address.

After lunch, Curtis did some tickets and then did a LONG questionnaire he needed to do for work.

Curtis got an email in the early evening stating he had been accepted for his provincial nomination, which means he now should be able to apply for Permanent Residency, as well as being able to get a work permit, which is excellent!

Kim’s Day

Kim started her day with a team meeting where she updated their manager about the recruitment process for a new hire and discussed the possibility of adding another role for recruitment, which was approved. As a result Kim started some research and began to form a job listing, she has also reached out to the head of technology to see the needs that his department would have from this new position.

For the rest of the morning Kim set up a laptop for a new starter and arranged for a laptop sent out last week to be returned as that person is currently working from their machine and a new starter will joining would use it more. So she arranged a same day courier for that, which was great as Apple were out of stock for the laptop that Kim needs.

In the early afternoon Kim hosted the weekly social call where only one other person joined. It was so nice to have a chat with this person as they only started with the company this week so ot was a great time to have an informal chat and get to know each other.

After the call Kim sat down to take a better look at the spreadsheet of new information for the facilities project. She reviewed it, added notes and then sent it back for the person to gather more information and set up meetings.

Kim then popped out to ship the laptop she set up in the morning out to the new starter for next week. She also took the time to drop the company card back to her colleague. They then joined Kim on the walk back home (both in masks and distanced) to get out and enjoy some fresh air.

When she got back home Kim focused on setting up the other laptop that was delivered while she was out for the other new starter who joins soon. Once that was set up Kim focused on some more HR learning and had a call about the facilities project.

As she was in the zone with all things HR Kim took the time to update peoples info on the HR system and reach out to people to remind them if gaps that they have in their profiles.

Evening

Curtis had the remaining leftovers and Kim had some chicken, potato and vegetables for dinner.

We watched some TV and some YouTube and then we each reached out to our former companies to get reference letters confirming that we worked there, which we’ll need for the next step of the process.

We watched more TV and played some games and then headed to bed.
