Place 49 – Day 265: Auckland – Piha Beach (Again) & Sky Tower Dinner

Wee both woke up at 07:30 and Kim went to work. Curtis got up and had breakfast whilst waiting for his family to arrive.

Once his family arrived, Curtis got in the car and they were off for the day.

The plan for today was to go to Piha beach. This is the black beach that we have been to previously, but we wanted to show the family.

Once they got to the beach, it was pretty windy but there wasn’t really anyone there, which made for a good walk.

It was windy enough that the sand was being kicked up from the beach, which had an awesome affect!

They walked around the beach for a while and then went to look at the waves that Curtis knew crashed onto the rocks nearby.

After the beach, they went to the highest cafe in Auckland, which we had been to previously.

Curtis had the Moroccan Lamb Sandwich which was phenomenal!

They left the cafe and drove to Kim’s work to get the keys for Curtis’car from her and then Curtis was dropped off at the car.

Curtis drove home to get some evening clothes and then drove to the rental house.

At 16:20, Curtis drove to the garage that Kim’s car was in to pickup the keys and pay for required repairs. He then got some fuel and drove to pick Kim up from work.

After this, we can home and chilled for a moment before driving down to the sky tower in the city.

We first went to the observation deck from which we got a 360° view of the city.

After here, we went down a level to the cafe and had a drink whilst we waited.

We finished our drinks and went in the lift to the floor above where we were booked to have dinner, on a revolving floor! This allowed us to see the whole city at night which was beautiful.

The food was absolutely divine! For starter, we all shared some Kumara bread and had our own starters also. Curtis had King Prawns and Kim had duck breast.

Shortly after, it was the main! Curtis had venison and Kim had steak.

The venison was excellent and the steak was just OK.

For dessert, Curtis had a coffee cake and Kim had a chocolate orange dessert.

The food was excellent and the company even better!

Curtis’ family leave tomorrow evening, so it’s the last day!

Place 49 – Day 264: Auckland – War Memorial Museum & Family Quiz Night!

We woke up together at 07:30 and Curtis took Kim to work as her car is in the garage.

Once Curtis got back from dropping Kim off, he had some breakfast and a coffee and relaxed before showering.

Curtis then drove over to the rental house to meet up with his family.

After getting to the house, everyone got ready and then they all headed out to the War Memorial Museum. Once they got there, there was no free street parking, so they had to pay for the underground parking.

The museum tour started with a Maori experience, which was a story of how New Zealand was founded via traditional Maori song and dance, including the Haka at the end!

After that display, they spent a couple of hours walking around the museum. There were all different exhibits, but the best sections were the WWI & WWII sections which were informative and had a lot of memorabilia.

The building itself was incredibly grand also.

They went to the volcano section at the end and went into a simulation of a volcano/earthquake. This was a little disappointing as it was a long wait for a tiny shake of the room and the lights turning off.

Once the museum was all done, they went to the cafe and got some food and coffee. Curtis had a cappucino and some ham and cheese macaroni.

After lunch, they made their way back to the house and then Curtis went an took some chocolate to Kim at work.

After relaxing for a bit, Curtis went back to Kim’s work to pick her up.

Once we both got back to the house, there was fajitas waiting for us, made by Lisa! We ate these and then drove down to New Lynn to quiz night where Curtis’ family joined in and met Danielle and Josh, also.

We came second to last again, which is perfect, and we all had a great time. They also have new desserts so we had to try those. Curtis had a tiramisu and Kim had a Sundae.

We came home and went right to bed…We were very tired!

Place 58 – Day 2: Kaikoura – Whale Watching, Hot Tub & Family Games Night!

We woke up a bit later, at 08:30, and got showered. We had very nice showers here again, which was a win!

Lisa went to the bakery to get some breakfast. This was an assortment of pastries.

From this point, we walked down to the whale watching building. Next to this, there was a black stony beach and a wonderful view of the mountains. We then went inside for our briefing.

After the briefing, we went into a bus to take us to the bay where the boat was.

We were then on the boat for 2.5 hours! We saw a lot of Albatross, including the biggest one in the world, the wandering Albatross. As well as this, we got to see the mountains from the sea, which were stunning.

There were many other birds that we saw, too. We stopped moving a few times so the crew could track the whales’ sonar, which we were unlucky with the first few times.

After a while, they finally heard the sonar of a whale and we raced to where it should be and, sure enough, it was right there, just chilling on the top of the water. We were then told that it was about to dive back down and we got some great photos and videos!

We then made our way back to land and got on the bus back to the whale watching building.

From here, Kim went off with Lisa and the kids to get food whilst Curtis and Gareth went to get the campervan looked at as there were some warning lights appearing.

Kim, the kids and Lisa were unable to find any food and met Curtis and Gareth at the garage before going to Subway for lunch.

After lunch, we went back to the garage and found out that the campervan was all good so didn’t have to worry about that at all. We then went to the shop to get dinner supplies.

We got back to the campsite and fancied a dip in the hottub, so we did that for a couple of hours, though it was incredibly hot!

We got out and had a shower and then it was time for dinner.

We had a BBQ for dinner, though it was too cold to sit outside so we went inside and had a lovely meal!

After this, we went to the onsite games room and all had an amazing time playing the games there. There was table tennis, fußball, pool & air hockey. We were here for ages and then had to head to bed at 22:00!

Tomorrow is another driving day but not too long, which is a positive.

Place 49 – Day 250: Auckland – Chicken Feast & Planning

Curtis’ Day;

Curtis had to get a lot done today as it was his last day for 1.5 weeks!

Curtis worked hard all morning and was surprised when it was already 12:00!

Curtis was so hungry, so he went out to buy some food. On the way, he saw Josh so he stopped and had a quick chat.

Soon after, Curtis got to the place he bought lunch from. Curtis ordered a chicken burger and chips which was quite tasty (though there was cucumber in the burger which is odd) though it took 25 minutes to make for some reason, and they weren’t busy, either!

Curtis at that whilst he did some work that he needed to get sorted.

Curtis had all cases re-assigned to other people by about 16:00 and left the office at 16:30. He walked down to the apartments to see his family again, but this time the weather was much nicer!

Curtis chatted with them about their day as they went to a volcano island!

Both of us;

Kim left work late and then had to Uber down to the apartments but she got to us eventually and we went out for dinner!

We walked to the viaduct and went to a place that Lisa found called ‘Dr Rudis’. This was a bar/brewery/restaurant.

We arrived and there wasnt really anywhere for us to sit to start with, but we found a spot eventually.

The music was a bit loud but the food on the menu sounded good.

We got a chicken sharing platter and two pizzas, as well as beer.

We are all of our food and then made our way back to the apartment.

On the way, we got another great view of the sky tower!

We got back to the apartment and had some planning to do! We’re off on a fun trip for the next week, which you’ll hear more about tomorrow. Its exciting and should be a lot of fun and an adventure.

We left the apartment, walked to the car and walked home.

When we got home, we packed for our trip and then got some sleep! Kim actually has to work for an hour tomorrow morning before we leave.

Place 49 – Day 241: Auckland – Lunchtime Braai

Curtis’ Day;

Curtis got to the office and got on with work.

Curtis also helped out with getting stuff ready for the lunchtime ‘Braai’ (A South African BBQ).

Curtis was pretty busy all morning but was really looking forward to the BBQ!

At 12:45, the BBQ got going! Curtis had two boerewors (South African Sausage), some ‘Sloppy Joe’ made by his colleague, some homemade ‘South African Style’ potato salad and two other green salads.

Curtis had a nice extended lunch just chatting with his colleagues!

In the afternoon he was able to finish off a few things and then he went home.

Both of us;

Kim went to the gym in the evening and then when she came home she made a risotto.

We had a but of difficulty whilst cooking when the ceramic dish we were using exploded! We transferred it to a pan and continued cooking. Dinner was delicious!

Curtis is off to Wellington for the day again tomorrow.

Place 49 – Day 232: Auckland – Steak Sandwich & Chatting With The (semi) Pros

We woke up at 11:00 and didn’t have anything for breakfast. We needed to do the shop anyway, so we went to do the shop but stopped in at a bakery also!

Before we went to the bakery, we went to go to Coffix but noticed it had a new name! They have left the Coffix name and changed to the name Little Things. The coffee was a little more expensive then before, but we spoke to them and it’s their own blend from Columbia, Kenya & Ethiopia.

The coffee was delicious and really well made too! We got our coffee and then went to the bakery. Curtis got a very large croissant and Kim got a chocolate Danish.

We ate our breakfast and then did the weekly food shop. The shop got incredibly busy so that was time to leave!

We got home and just chilled out for hours! We played some games and then needed to have some food before Curtis played hockey, so Kim made an awesome steak sandwich!

Steak_Sandwich_Auckland

The photo doesn’t look great but it was amazing!

We ate our food and then watched some TV before Tabitha came over as she was coming to hockey with us.

Once we arrived at the rink, there was a Semi-Pro hockey game going on. This is the NZIHL, the top league in New Zealand. We got to watch the last period but then Curtis’ team had to figure out where to get changed!

Curtis’ team ended up getting changed in the same place as the home team, Botany Swarm! It was a cool experience and then got to chat with a lot of the players and have a laugh, too.

The game went OK until the last period when Curtis’ team fell apart and lost 2-1 in the end after being 1-0 up until then!

Curtis got 6 minutes in penalties but we won’t go into that…

We came home and Tabitha went home. We then wanted to watch the last episode of Modus, so we did that before going to bed.
