Place 72 – Day 20: Vancouver,BC – We Both Got Jobs!

Morning Phone Interview

Kim had an interview at 10:00. This was for a hospitality app in which you can get one off shifts and work, which may be good to get a bit extra cash.

This was very successful and Kim was told she would be approved!

3rd Interview

Kim had another interview today, so she had to head down to the city.

Kim got there and the interview lasted just 25 minutes, with it being more of a character check.

We Both Got Jobs!

Whilst Kim was at her interview, Curtis received a call offering him a job! This was the exact job he wanted and he is very excited. He had to get a lot of paperwork done for that and he starts on Tuesday.

When Kim got home from her interview, she also got a call offering her the job! We both got jobs and the exact jobs we wanted.

Also on the plus side, both jobs are in the city and we are just 10-15 minute walk from each other.

We were pretty happy with today, so it was celebration time.

Chicken

We started our celebrations with chicken from KFC. We walked down to KFC to get a few tenders and some popcorn chicken.

Pub

We came back home and relaxed for a bit and then decided we should treat ourselves and get a drink.

We found a pub which was underground and went and Curtis got a beer whilst Kim got a wine. We sat and just relaxed in the really nice pub before we walked back home.

What Men Want (film)

We got home and ate ice cream whilst watching the film What Men Want. The film was alright, kind of funny and an easy watch.

We are looking forward to the next part of our lives, now we have a home sorted as well as jobs…exciting times!

Place 70 – Day 14: Victoria, BC – New Shoes & Annoying News

We were up early today and ready to go by 10:00.

We walked up to Fort St where we caught a bus up to Saanich as Kim had a doctors appointment up there.

We got to the appointment early and Kim was seen early, which was a result!

We left the doctors and walked around the corner to a bus stop and caught a bus to Uptown mall.

We were on the hunt for some new winter shoes again.

After looking at uptown, Kim put aside some Timberlands and Curtis found nothing.

We walked down to Mayfair, the other mall, to look for shoes some more.

We went somewhere Linda suggested which is a big warehouse of shoes.

Curtis, after trying many pairs of shoes, was able to find some really nice dark brown timberland boots, too!

We succeeded! We celebrated by having a KFC, which was similar to the ones we get in the UK, which was great!

Unfortunately, whilst we ate, we found out that our travel plans have changed slightly. We had planned to go to another city to a concert, but the dates have now been moved to October, just 10 days before the show! We only just booked the flights to go and that was around £500.

We are going to make the most of it and go to this city for 4 days as planned, but it doesn’t seem that there is much to do. It is a real shame and we are both disappointed as we were really looking forward to the concert!

We made our way back to the shoe shop for Kim to collect her shoes and we both changed into our new kicks before we headed home on the bus.

Once we got back, we chilled out and did some admin regarding us having to change our plans and then we had dinner. Linda made crispy chicken thighs with vegetables and some delicious bread.

Once we ate, we watched some TV but all started to fall asleep, so we headed to bed.

Odd day today, having a great success with the shoes and then having the bad news about the concert….but that’s traveling for you!

Place 69 – Day 2: Kaitaia – Surfing on Shipwreck Bay, Revisiting ‘Terry’ & Seeing The Shipwreck

We were up for breakfast at 08:20. When we got to the dining area at our B&B, we were asked if we wanted coffee, which we did, and we then had a selection of cereals as well as toast and yogurt. We had a yogurt each and were then offered eggs and bacon, which we had. It certainly filled us up and the coffee rated a lot like caramel but other than that, it was a solid breakfast.

When we finished breakfast we then got ready and jumped in the car to go to the beach. The weather was a bit miserable but we still risked it! We stopped at a shop and Kim rented a surfboard for a couple of hours for a really good price!

We had to the drive onto the beach to park which was actually very easy as it was compact sand.

We got onto the beach and Kim was straight in to surf. The waves had disappeared for some reason! Kim tried and surfed a couple of waves, but they then stopped coming at all, so we moved down the road to another part of the beach, where there seemed to be more waves. Kim had a lot more fun here and actually got to surf! Curtis watched on and also saw how much fog was covering the hills.

Kim finished with surfing and we left the beach to return the board.

Once we got the board back, Curtis watched hockey and Kim went out to find some lunch. Once she got home, we had some pizza for lunch.

After hockey finished, we went out to the beach again to see if we could see our new octopus friend, we have named Terry, again.

Luckily, Terry was still there and we said hello to him he also came to say hi and Kim gave him a shell.

We left Terry and went to the shipwreck which was now visible due to the tide going out. There isn’t much there, but it was cool to look at.

The weather improved, too!

We then left the beach, but not before a visit to Terry again.

We drove to KFC and got some dinner there as we were told it is actually good here, so we have it a go. It was pretty good, and we had it whilst watching TV together!

Long busy day tomorrow, but should be fun.

Place 49 – Day 381: Auckland – Fancy Affogato & ‘1000 Doors’

We did absolutely nothing until and 16:15 when we took the 35 minute walk to the city.

We wanted to go to an ice cream and waffle shop to get an affogato as it had been recommended to Kim multiple times. The place was called OKO and is in the centre of Auckland, in Aotea Square.

We each got an affogato, Curtis’ was with chocolate and stracciatella ice cream and Kim’s was with caramel and chocolate. There were double shots of coffee too, so they were certainly strong!

After our coffee, there was something called ‘1000 doors’ next to us which we just had to check out.

We paid $10 each to enter. This was a maze type thing in which there were all different rooms with different films and different things to look at and touch. A lot of the rooms smelled bad, too, but we aren’t sure if that was part of it, though.

We left this area and walked towards the water for a stroll around.

We got to KFC and decided to have dinner here, which was OK.

We walked from here back to the hostel which took about 20 minutes.

We got back and we got everything booked for the rest of our time in New Zealand which was useful!

We then watched some TV and that was that. We also packed our stuff up as we have a new place to go tomorrow…jumping back into HelpX!

Place 49 – Day 326: Auckland – Homemade KFC

Curtis’ Day;

It’s finally finished! Curtis was, finally, able to complete the development work he has been working on for last few days, which was a great feeling.

That being said, Curtis still had a lot of work to do and a few cases had built up over the time he’d been doing the other work.

Along with that, he also helped his new colleague with some work and before he knew it, it was home time.

The traffic on the way home was awful today, but Curtis still got home at a decent time.

Both of us;

Kim got home and neither of us were hungry so we chilled out and s tatted a new TV series. We starting working Bodyguard as we had heard it was a good show. We can’t say we’re disappointed yet!

We finally had some food around 19:00. Kim made KFC style chicken wraps with some kumara fries on the side. These were incredibly flavoursome.

We sat and chatted with Nicola for a while before vacating to the bedroom and watching another episode of Bodyguard.

It’s Kim’s birthday tomorrow!
