Place 72 – Day 505: Vancouver, BC – Busy, Productive & Successful!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had quite a quiet morning, but did a few things here and there.

After lunch, it got a bit busier, with a few tickets coming in together and Curtis jumped on those, as well as some people reporting some other issues which Curtis helped with too.

At the end of the day, Curtis was informed of someone leaving the company tomorrow so he had to organise their equipment return.

Kim’s Day

Kim started her day with a quick call with a teammate to help them with a question they had and set up a few things on their calendar. She then spent a small amount of time preparing for her meetings for the day before hosting an onboarding.

After the onboarding Kim had a meeting planned to go over some HR things. The meeting covered kittle of what was planned, but was very productive and useful!

Kim then joined the recruitment meeting to discuss the open roles and the next steps.

For the afternoon Kim had a lot of little meetings and organised a few IT things as well as looked at candidates for an open position that the company has.

Evening

Kim went out to get some chicken and once she got back we had Katsu Curry!

We had the sauce already, so we just needed to bread and fry the chicken (and make rice).

We ate that and watched some TV for the evening.

We can’t believe it’s Thursday already!

Place 72 – Day 481: Vancouver, BC – First Laptop Setup In A While

Curtis’ Day

Curtis went right to the office in the morning to get a laptop setup as well as check a few things.

Curtis had trouble finding a laptop that would work correctly, but he managed to find one eventually and got that setup. This was the first laptop Curtis has setup in a while!

Once that was setup, Curtis got it packed up, checked a few things around the office and headed back home.

Once he was home, he did a few tickets and went on a call with someone to fix something for them urgently.

After a late lunch, Curtis got some project work done and then it was already the end of the day!

Kim’s Day

To start her week Kim prepared for a few meetings for the day and caught up on a little admin. Then Kim welcomed a couple of new starters and took them through their onboarding.

After the onboarding Kim got ready to have a meeting in regards to the facilities project, unfortunately their previous meeting overran so Kim met with her colleague and their manager to discuss. Shortlu after, Kim supported an exec member with creating his HR system profile and showed him how it works and what the software does.

Kim then hosted another interview and it went really well. She then had a chat with her colleague to discuss the meeting and the next steps.

For the afternoon Kim added more information to a new role they may potentially be hiring for in the new year and purchased a laptop. She tried to do it online, but it failed a few times so Kim ended up calling customer services to place the order and it was done so quick and easily! She also helped someone set up their email signature and she sent out information in regards to the upcoming winter party.

For the rest of the afternoon and into the evening Kim focused on the quiz. She updated a few questions and made sure that the answers were correct!

Evening

We had some hoisin chicken stir fry for dinner and watched The Queen’s Gambit which we are thoroughly enjoying.

We then played some SuperHot which we had played on VR but they released a new one not on VR, so we thought we would give it a go! It was super fun and we got a little addicted.

Kim watched the remainder of the film she has been watching and then we headed to bed.

Place 72 – Day 476: Vancouver, BC – PNP Received!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had a team.meeting at 09:30 and then after that he had to remove 2 mailbox permissions for someone and then just on a call with them and make some changes on their email.

After he did that, he did the same with another person.

Curtis then had to reach out to someone to figure out their equipment for when they start in the new year, as well as obtain their address.

After lunch, Curtis did some tickets and then did a LONG questionnaire he needed to do for work.

Curtis got an email in the early evening stating he had been accepted for his provincial nomination, which means he now should be able to apply for Permanent Residency, as well as being able to get a work permit, which is excellent!

Kim’s Day

Kim started her day with a team meeting where she updated their manager about the recruitment process for a new hire and discussed the possibility of adding another role for recruitment, which was approved. As a result Kim started some research and began to form a job listing, she has also reached out to the head of technology to see the needs that his department would have from this new position.

For the rest of the morning Kim set up a laptop for a new starter and arranged for a laptop sent out last week to be returned as that person is currently working from their machine and a new starter will joining would use it more. So she arranged a same day courier for that, which was great as Apple were out of stock for the laptop that Kim needs.

In the early afternoon Kim hosted the weekly social call where only one other person joined. It was so nice to have a chat with this person as they only started with the company this week so ot was a great time to have an informal chat and get to know each other.

After the call Kim sat down to take a better look at the spreadsheet of new information for the facilities project. She reviewed it, added notes and then sent it back for the person to gather more information and set up meetings.

Kim then popped out to ship the laptop she set up in the morning out to the new starter for next week. She also took the time to drop the company card back to her colleague. They then joined Kim on the walk back home (both in masks and distanced) to get out and enjoy some fresh air.

When she got back home Kim focused on setting up the other laptop that was delivered while she was out for the other new starter who joins soon. Once that was set up Kim focused on some more HR learning and had a call about the facilities project.

As she was in the zone with all things HR Kim took the time to update peoples info on the HR system and reach out to people to remind them if gaps that they have in their profiles.

Evening

Curtis had the remaining leftovers and Kim had some chicken, potato and vegetables for dinner.

We watched some TV and some YouTube and then we each reached out to our former companies to get reference letters confirming that we worked there, which we’ll need for the next step of the process.

We watched more TV and played some games and then headed to bed.

Place 72 – Day 474: Vancouver, BC – Interviews

Curtis’ Day

Curtis was back at work today! He had 400 emails to go through as well as some messages.

People clearly realised he was back as he got a flurry of messages asking for him to do different things and asking him questions, but he had fun doing it and was glad to be back at work again.

After his weekly team meeting, Curtis helped someone with an unusual request to add a logo to a couple of places on their file document storage space, so they are more recognisable for each team, which was not something he had done before!

Curtis figured out how to do this but then it didn’t work, but he got it working after some troubleshooting.

Curtis had a bit of other work to do and still had some emails to go through and then he had a meeting with some people from the Vancouver office to discuss the culture and how it feels to work for the company at the moment. They’re gathering information so they can make improvements if needed.

Curtis had some lunch and then his afternoon was a bit more relaxed.

He had some more work to do and caught up with a few more bits of information and prepared a bit for work tomorrow.

Curtis also completed one of his PR applications (for the BC PNP), paid for & submitted that so now he just waits until he can submit his work permit application!

Kim’s Day

Kim spent a lot of her day on various calls with her colleague. The first they went over a few questions they each had and Kim showed her colleague a few things in the HR system.

Shortly after this call they both joined an onboarding call where they met two new hires and helped them set up a few things. Then they joined a couple of the execs to discuss the facilities project and were able to move forward. Kim and the CEO will have a meeting and check things out on Thursday afternoon.

Kim then hosted her first interview! It went so well and she really enjoyed the experience. The candidate was great and it was so interesting. After the interview Kim and her teammate had a chat about the candidate and how it all went. Kim then worked on a few smaller tasks like looking at other candidates for the position, sending out an invite for the gift exchange and she called to chase a laptop, but had no response.

Later in the afternoon Kim hosted a second interview, again it went well and was interesting. Her colleague called after the interview again and they discussed it and then looked over more candidates waiting to be processed. They also then had a chat with a department manager about the onboarding process and how happy he was with it.

Evening

Once Kim was home, we had leftovers from our roast yesterday and we watched some TV.

We then played a whole host of games that recently became free, so we had a fun night trying out some different games!

Kim then watched some more of a movie she was watching and Curtis played some games.

We watched a bit of TV together and relaxed for a bit before heading to bed.

Place – Day 464: Vancouver, BC – Sinus Infection?

Curtis’ Day

Curtis woke up and his ear was still feeling blocked/pressured, but he also had a bit of a strange sinus feeling, which would work with Curtis’ original theory of it being a sinus infection.

Curtis dealt with that all day!

Curtis started work an hour later at 10:00 today to help cover the later hours of Black Friday support, so he had to finish at 18:00.

In the morning, Curtis had a call with someone to try and get something sorted for them, which went alright but there were a couple of issues which took some time to address.

Curtis then had a meeting with his manager to discuss this particular request as Curtis is off next week, so he needs to give a few things over to his boss.

Curtis then did a bit of work and had lunch.

After lunch, Curtis did an offboard and then some more work and answered questions for the remainder of the day.

Kim’s Day

Today was far more productive than Kim had imagined it would be! She started her day by getting ready for a meeting with the executives about the facilities project. So she called a few people to get a couple of quotes on things to get a rough idea of costs. The meeting was then moved to mid next week so Kim spent some time working on a social even happening next week before trying to purchase a software.

For the rest of the morning Kim started setting up the new HR software. She created shell accounts for existing employees and had a play about with some of the features and settings as well as making it on brand and ready to go.

Kim then worked on sorting out a few things for some new hires starting over the next few weeks. She organised start dates and decided to start implementing minimum notice periods before a new starter can start, to give time for the onboarding process. When she made this suggestion, everyone was on board so that was fantastic!

Kim then decided she deserved a coffee, so she went out and picked one up for Curtis and herself and then spent the rest of the afternoon finishing the movie she started yesterday.

Evening

Once Curtis was done with work, we ordered some food from Tacofino and whilst we waited for that, Curtis called the doctor for the second time of the day to see if they can let him know about the next steps for his ear.

They think it could be a sinus infection, so Curtis got some nasal spray to try and see if that helps! He really hopes so!

We went and picked up our food and then we watched Spiderman: Into The Spiderverse which we actually really enjoyed!

Curtis picked up his nasal spray after the film and then we chilled for the rest of the evening.

Place 72 – Day 362: Vancouver, BC – Moving Things

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had an incredibly busy day today!

Curtis had a meeting right away in the morning. This was a project meeting to determine the scope and requirements from the stakeholders.

Once that meeting was done, Curtis had another meeting with some of his team members to create a full project from the meeting they just had.

After that, Curtis was able to start work on some tickets but was then asked to head to the office to move a few things around.

When he got to the office, Curtis moved a server cabinet from the boardroom to another area so it was not in the way.

Once he did that, Curtis had to move around some of the server cabinets in the server room as they weren’t placed quite right.

After this, Curtis did some more things around the office and then headed home, but detoured to get some Vietnamese coffee beans and normal coffee beans.

Curtis did some tickets and helped a bunch of people in the afternoon and overall had a busy day!

Kim’s Day

Kim started her morning by finishing cleaning the whiteboard for todays team meeting that were coming in. She wiped it all down and ensured that everything was sprayed by sanitizer.

Then the team members arrived for their meeting and it was so great to see them all! She explained a few of the things that are set up around the office and then left them to it!

Kims colleague came back from her mini break today so they had a catch-up and download of all the information of things that have happened over the week and it was great. They went over the few things left for the parties. For the rest of the day Kim worked on the quizzes and finally managed to word a few of the questions in a way that makes way more sense. So that was amazing.

To finish the day Kim spent an over an hour helping with writing up a communication. It was a lot of recording and lots of little tweaks here and there to make it perfect.

Evening

When Kim got home, we had some chicken chilli for dinner and watched some TV, along with playing some mini golf.

Place 72 – Day 338: Vancouver, BC – Pixel Buds

Curtis’ Day

Curtis’ start to the morning was filled with admin and a lot of people messaging him questions and asking for help, so that took up his time until his 10:30 weekly team meeting.

The team meeting took an hour and then Curtis had new tickets to get sorted, as there were a lot that arrived during the meeting.

This took Curtis nicely to lunch time.

After lunch, Curtis was able to fix an issue for someone and then did some other work and admin which took him nicely to the end of the day.

During the day, Curtis received his Pixel Buds, his new wireless earbuds, which he is enjoying!

Kim’s Day

Kim started her day by handing out some post and then she joined a couple of colleagues in getting a coffee.

When they got back to the office Kim drafted and sent out some emails before making notes for an upcoming meeting. She also called a postal service to see if there have been problems delivering the post lately, but it doesn’t seem like there is.

Kim was due to have an hour long meeting with her colleague to go over some events happening over the next few months, but instead it lasted the rest of the day! Kim made a quick report just before the meeting and then they got stuck in. They spoke about vendors and each of their options, called a vendor, organised the budged, sorted the timeline of planning, arranged the day of events and made a game plan for the next few days.

After the meeting Kim drew up a schedule for the day of and made a guide for what each event is and how it will work. Kim also reached out to the vendors she had been talking to for further information. She then wrote up a to do list for tomorrow before heading home.

Teriyaki Chicken

Kim got home and marinaded some chicken in teriyaki and then we tried on some clothes that we got delivered.

We then took out the recycling and Kim finished off the dinner.

We watched some TV, played some mini golf and relaxed for the evening.

Place 72 – Day 303: Vancouver, BC – The Outside?!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis did a lot of admin and tickets at the start of his day, but then had to pack up and head to the office!

The office is reopening with a lot of rules and restrictions as well as just a small number of people as of this week.

Curtis and his colleagues went in first to do the orientation and assist with some last few things around the office.

Curtis isn’t going back for a couple of weeks but wanted to help out.

It was a little strange for Curtis to be back in the office and everyone has to walk the same direction around the office which means it takes Curtis a long time to get anywhere!

Curtis did some more tickets and then had the orientation, learning what everyone can and cannot do and all the rules.

Curtis then helped fill some bottles with sanitizer, each person gets their own, and then he had a team meeting.

After the team meeting, Curtis cleaned the coffee urns which had coffee in them since everyone left…so you can imagine how disgusting they were!

After cleaning that, Curtis had some lunch and ordered himself something exciting!

After lunch, Curtis helped put up some tape around the office to shut areas. He then went to each desk that will not be occupied and put a ‘do not take’ sticker on each monitor just to make sure they don’t go missing.

Curtis left the office around 16:30 and walked home.

Once Curtis got home, he emptied the dryer and then Kim got back so we went right over to our old apartment.

Kim’s Day

Kim spent most of her day in the office, before she went in she caught up on emails and messages.

Once she was in the office Kim collected a few things that needed to be sent out and got them all set up. She then arranged a FedEx pickup and started to move onto the next FedEx package that needed to be sent out. Kim went to print the documents from the first package and it wouldn’t work, so while she was arranging the second package she called FedEx to send over the paperwork she needed. After and hour and a half of calls, speaking to 3 people she was told they couldn’t help and she would have to start again. So she resubmit the form online and went through the whole process again. She finally had them packaged up and ready to go.

Kim had a quick walkround with a colleague to check what needed to be done in the office and then moved some furniture around.

After lunch Kim set up a game of cribbage, this time its the final! Once of the teams is undefeated so that will be exciting. She then spent the rest of the afternoon making plans for the rest of the week and moving more furniture around.

All The Admin

We met with our old landlord to get our deposit back, but also had a long chat about the state of the world and everything that happening.

After we did that, we went and did the shop. We got a decent amount of stuff and popped to Canadian Tire too.

Today was the first time we had been outside in 2 weeks, so it did actually feel a little strange.

We got home and unpacked the shopping and then had more leftovers for dinner.

After that, we watched some comedy and some other TV and then went to bed.

We were very tired today as we didn’t sleep too great.
