Place 72 – Day 103: Vancouver, BC – Kim’s Company Summer Picnic

Curtis’ Day & Evening

Curtis got to work and had a security meeting. The meeting was quite short, but he was then able to get on with some work.

He setup a mac for someone and then then setup another laptop for someone else, all whilst doing some tickets.

Curtis’ day was busy and varied again, which was great. He had to remote into some laptops in North Carolina and set them up and that took some time.

In the afternoon, Curtis gave the mac to the person he set it up for and then spent most of the afternoon trying to sort the virtual machine again!

Just before he left, Curtis had to get the approval to give someone access to something that they needed urgently.

Curtis then helped someone that was having issues with their email account and then he walked home.

Curtis just played games in the evening whilst Kim was out. He also tried sushi again and still doesn’t like it!

Kim’s Day & Evening

Today is finally the day of Kims work summer party and she is so excited and ready to start the day. When she got in she arranged stuff for the day and ordered some catering for a summer party in Boston that will be happening tomorrow. She also passed over the front desk to her predecessor who agreed to come back and cover for the day! This was great as it meant Kim did not have to train anyone.

Kim then left to head to the dollar store to meet with her collaegue to pick up a few little things for the party like table cloths, games for kids and supplies for the planned games. They were then met by another colleague and a rental car that they had for the day.

All 3 jumped in the car and headed to Costco to pick up, burgers, hot dogs, buns and other stackable items. Then they went back to work to pick up all of the things they had collected over the past few days and put that in the car before heading to Safeway to pick up a few Gluten Free items, ice and have some lunch. The first thing on the list was lunch, so Kim got a build your own style Chinese food put which was great!

After this everyone got back in the car and went to the party destination, Prospect Point. Just after they arrived and started setting up, one of the rental companies arrive, they then set up the BBQ and generator. The girls unloaded the car of everything and left one girl to prep the food while Kim and the other lady headed back to the office to collect the last few things from the office and but the few things that they had forgotten, like suncream and veggie dogs!

They then went back to the park to finish setting up. When they arrived, the other lady had pretty much finished all of the food and was just chopping the last few onions! Kim helped set out the eating area, by organising the food tables, sorting out the drinks and moving all of the spare stuff out of the way in the small kitchen style room they had available to use. Just as Kim put the last box away the bus turned up with the first group of people. Kim then went about getting balloons blown up and put about the place to decorate.

The evening started with people milling around and soaking up the sun, before the BBQ food was ready to eat! Once the food was flying off the grill people were eating and having a great time. There was a bouncy castle, volleyball net, croquet, tug of war and a few little things like foam swards, soft footballs and hoolahoops for the kids. As it was a family event and Kim was allowed to organise all the fun and games, she knew that she had to get the kids on her side if she had any chance of anyone participating in any of the races. Kim was well prepared with little bubble tubes for every kid.

The first race started a little while after the BBQ and it was the classic 3 legged race. First it was parents and children and then there were 2 heats of the adults playing too. The next game was the egg and spoon race, there was a kids only race and then another 2 rounds of the adults racing, with the final being the 2 winners of each race.

There was a small break before the tug of war! Everyone got involved and it was a child favourite! They had a few rounds and then they had a small inter-departmental competition where one team totally destroyed the rest of the company and were rightfully crowned winners. After this utter destruction from that team the children wanted another go so we arranged for a few goes for them, the best was against their own parents!

The last 2 races of the day was the wheelbarrow race. This was done with parent and child and it was great fun. The final was a sack race! People were starting to dwindle by this point so we just had child participation. Just before they all started heading home, we distributed the foam swords, hoolahoops, bounce balls and remaining bubble amongst the kids for being so much fun.

Kim and her colleague then took 5 minutes as people were leaving to play a little bit of volleyball, this was the first 5 minutes they had to themselves for the whole day! Then it was straight into clearing up and making the place look nice, clean and tidy. Kim had the great idea of asking one of the rental companies if we could use their dolly to make one return trip to the car much easier, and they said yes! It took a lot of time and effort out of the clean up.

After the clean up, one colleagueauge dropped the other 2 off at their homes before she and Kim went back to the office to empty the car to allow a quick return to the rental in the morning. Once this was done she kindly dropped Kim off home, which saved Kim so much time!

Late Evening Chill

Kim is up very early tomorrow to get to work for an earlier time, so once she got back around 21:35, there wasn’t much time left before she wanted to sleep.

She got ready for tomorrow and then we watches some videos, did our duolingo and went to bed!

Place 72 – Day 90: Vancouver, BC – Pride Pot Luck

Curtis’ Day

Curtis’ day was completely non-stop and he was able to do something all the time, which was great for him.

At lunch time, there was an office pot luck to support pride!

There was a crazy amount of food and noone went hungry, that’s for sure!

It was a nice time for Curtis to mingle and chat with his colleagues but he had a lot to do so he had to go back to his deal and sort it out.

Curtis received a package of Apple Mac laptops which he started to configure, but then the CEO had issues with his laptop so he spent the last hour of his day fixing that.

Kim’s Day

In the morning Kim organised some invoices and sent some emails before heading down to one of the hotels to have a little coffee catch up.

The ‘little’ coffee catch up ended up a bit of a longer chat than little, but it was great to talk over some things and get a better understanding of the hotel.

When she got back to the office Kim helped set up the lunch and learn. This meant organising the kitchen to have a seating and presenting area. There was a little 45 minute break in the set up so Kim was at her desk catching up on a few smaller things that needed to be orgnaised. Then it was back to setting up chairs and then when the pizza arrived, laying that out in a way that made it easy to have it picked up and people sat down quickly.

The lunch and learn today was about inclusivity and diversity, specifically for the LBGTQ2S+ community. It means so much to Kim to live in a city that is so inclusive and does feel so accepting and safe for all. It is even more amazing to work for a company that promotes a safe environment and provides education in the workplace. About a year ago there was another talk that went over pronouns and the spectrums of gender identity and gender expression. The talk this year focused more on key moments in Canadian / North American history that have carved the community into what it is now. It was such a great talk that had such a wonderful turnout.

At the end, Kim flipped the kitchen back to its original state and cleared away all the empty pizza boxes.

In the afternoon Kim had orgnaised some time with her colleague in IT to discuss their project that had taken a back seat for the past few weeks. It was great to bring it back to the front and get the ball rolling again!

After the meeting Kim organised some notes for the following day, made a call to FedEx and then headed home!

Admin & Games

We didn’t do a huge amount in the evening, but Curtis played some games and Kim had to run up to the supermarket as well as got some admin done.

We watched the last two episodes (ever!) of Jane The Virgin and then went to sleep. Tomorrow is Friday!

Place 72 – Day 85: Vancouver, BC – Getting Pampered With Linda

Brunch & Shopping

This morning Kim got ready to spend a day with Linda! She was so excited for this weekend to finally be here!

She got up and ready and walked across the city to Linda’s hotel so they could get some brunch. Kim arrived with a few ideas for brunch and they settled on going to De Dutch, which is where Kim and Curtis went many weeks ago! Kim had the Eggs Benny and Linda had the Dutch toast! Both were very delicious. They spent breakfast chatting and catching up, it was very lovely!

They then headed out for a great day of relaxing and shopping. They walked up and down Robson street, then went to sport check and finally Helly Hansen to find Linda a nice coat!

After these they went for a nice walk around the shopping centre just for some air con!

Haircut

Curtis had a haircut booked for 12:30, so he got up shortly after Kim left around 09:45.

Curtis had a shower and then some cereal for breakfast.

The NHL20 beta is out this weekend, so Curtis spent pretty much all day playing that!

Curtis walked down for his haircut which was in Gastown, so he had to walk through some not so nice parts to get to it.

Coffee

We met for coffee after Curtis’ haircut and just chatted.

We went to 49th parallel and it was just as good as before!

Massage

After the coffee with Curtis they then went back to the shopping centre to have another walk around to kill some time fore their spa booking.

They then went to the hotel where the spa was to check in. They completed the paperwork and were given a tour before being shown to the changing room to get ready. They were given robes and told to relax or enjoy the amenities. Kim went and had a nosey at the pool before going to lounge to relax. They were then shortly collected for their massages. After this week Kim was in great need of a massage and it was so lovely!

They came out feeling lovely and refreshed and had a nice glass of water and Kim ate an apple while they relaxed and chatted away in the lounge.

They eventually decided to leave so went and got ready and walked over to dinner.

Dinner

For dinner Kim decided to visit the Italian restaurant she went to on her first day of work and it certainly did not disappoint! The food was amazing!

Kim then walked Linda back to the hotel before heading home herself.

Purchasing A Fan

Kim got home around 21:00 and realised how crazy hot the apartment is at the moment, so went to buy a fan.

After she got back, we setup the fan and then relaxed, watching some TV and catching up with each other about our day.

Fireworks

We went to watch fireworks happening at English Bay, but we couldn’t see them from where we are!

We came back, watched some more TV and then headed to bed.

Place 72 – Day 83: Vancouver, BC – Not The Microwave!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis’ day was fairly dull and slow, which is the first time its been that slow since he started.

He tried keeping himself busy with things here and there, but it became a struggle!

At lunch, he went to Starbucks and got an iced flat white which was tremendous.

After lunch, it was much the same but around 16:00, Curtis got asked to do something urgently, which he then had to get help from a colleague with an was actually unable to do in the end becuase it seems that only one person (who is not working) has permissions for the site!

Curtis spent until he went on home on this, so at least it passed the time.

Kim’s Day

Today Kim got to the course a little early and helped people who were practicing by being a dummy!

The main focuses today were Major Injuries, Medical Emergencies, Multiple Patients, the Head and Nervous System, another quiz and a practice practical exam.

They started the day with medical emergencies and covered things like stroke, diabetes, angina and heart attack. For each emergency they covered what it is, causes, symptoms and possible treatments. Another thing that was covered in this section was Critical Incident Stress and this covered how to handle the repercussions of being involved in a high stress medical emergency. This covered talking points for the injured, helpers and bystanders of the event and discussed any Physical, Cognitive, Emotional and Behavioral experiences that they may go through. Then they discussed what ‘we’ as the first aiders might experience, struggle with and possible coping mechanisms. It was really great to see the mental health side of the repercussions of handling a first aid situation be recognised in the course. After all, first aiders are signing up to be the handler of some potentially pretty gruesome things and it can be hard to detach from that after the fact.

They then went on to cover Multiple Patients. This pretty much covered all the things you would think it would have to. Its not a nice discussion but it has to be mentioned. It is good to have the guidance ahead of time and be provided with universal notices that can be used in that kind of situation.

Then they spent some time on Major Injuries. This covered major ear, eye and nose injuries and major burns, sprains and dislocations. Once again each had a demonstration and then some had a practical that everyone was able to try and gain some experience on.

For the final part of the day everyone had to sit a multiple choice quiz and during this quiz people were individually taken out to be assessed on a few of the things they have already learned. Kim passed this test too which set her up nicely for the final day tomorrow!

At the end of the day, Kim and 2 others ran through a couple of scenarios to check that their timings were on point, before heading home for the day.

Breakfast For Dinner

We had breakfast for dinner, which was great. We ate muffins with sausage, egg and cheese, hashbrowns and baked beans.

Whilst we were making this, our microwave stopped working! Upon further inspection, it seems it is the plug sockets it was plugged into, rather than the microwave, which is good, we guess!

Curtis helped Kim with her first aid training and once she did that, Kim jumped in the shower and Curtis played some games.

We finished the evening with watching some TV and then headed to bed.

Place 72 – Day 78: Vancouver, BC – Study, Study, Study

We woke up without an alarm for the first time in what felt like forever and it was around 10:00 so a perfect time.

We had a pain au chocolat each which Kim picked up from Urban Fare. they’re great, covered in chocolate and big!

Kim then spent most of the day studying for her first aid course she is doing this week coming, whilst Curtis played games.

At one point, we did speak with Kim’s parents, briefly, and then we went to Starbucks (one we didn’t realise was there and is closer!) Purely so we could order off our phones and get a deal for a free drink!

We went out the house to the shop to get stuff for dinner and for the week.

Once we got that and then got back, we got our food started.

Curtis found a recipe for a simple yet delicious dish with minced beef.

This was a mix of a soy sauce, sugar, ginger, garlic, chili flakes & probably some other stuff other than that, it was delicous though!

Kim did a little more studying and then we had a small glass of the wine we had left whilst watching some TV.

Not a very interesting day but Kim only got the study material end of last week and needs to know it for this week!

Place 72 – Day 76: Vancouver, BC – Company Summer BBQ

Curtis’ Day

Curtis was only working until 13:00 as there was a company BBQ from then, so he had a shorter day.

Curtis got a couple of tickets sorted as well as got some admin done with regards to purchases.

Curtis spent some time looking at security configurations as well as configuring a spare laptop.

At 13:00, the BBQ events began. Every team (Curtis’ was yellow) sat together and were given clues. These clues led to places and the whole team had to be in a photo in front of that place. Yellow team took some time to plan a walking route and then set off.

Curtis’ team didn’t rush, but got all the photos done with 5 minutes to spare and were the 2nd to last team back.

After this, it was drinks time! The BBQ was on top of the building in which the company apartment is located, way up on the 46th floor with a great view.

Shortly after getting settled, the games began. The first game was to eat a doughnut off of a string without using your hands.

After this challenge, there was a small break and then a planking challenge. Curtis took part in that one for his team bit he didn’t do well…He was first out! The winner managed to do over 5 minutes!

After the planking challenge, there was a small break and then there was a balloon challenge. Each person had to tie a balloon to their leg and try and pop each others. This didn’t go well as everyone kept cheating!

The final challenge was a team one in which there was a large bucket of water at the front of a line of people and the first person had to fill a cup with water and pass it down the line, over their head, with everyone’s eyes closed. The last person then had to pour it into a small bucket and first team to fill the bucket won. Safe to say, Curtis’ team did not win but got very wet.

Curtis stayed until the end just chatting with people and eating the burgers and hotdogs, then he stayed to tidy and clean up. He helped take things down to the car and then walked home.

Curtis noticed he left his jacket back there, so hopefully he can get it back tomorrow.

Kim’s Day

Kim left home and headed the opposite direction to work. She is taking a first aid course for the whole of next week so had to go and pick up the work book / reading material. So she hopped on the skytrain to the first aid centre, grabbed the 2 binders for her colleague and herself, hopped back on the skytrain into the city and was at work before 9:15!

For the course Kim also needs another workbook so she printed all 300 pages off so she can study for the rest of the week, weekend and into next week. She tried reading it on the laptop but it was straining her eyes.

For the rest of the morning Kim went through quotes for a few upcoming things the social team has in the pipeline.

There were 2 meetings with catering arriving today. They both arrived early again which meant kim was sat smelling pizzas and burritos for about 30 minutes. She then set up the catering in each of the rooms the meetings were in. A couple of minutes later the pizzas were in the kitchen as the meeting had been cancelled! It was great news, Kim and the rest of her team grabbed some lunch and sat up on the roof to enjoy some sunshine.

When she got back to her desk Kim sorted out some post that had been left for her. Just as she finished this a whole new batch of things to post arrived so she got them done too.

At 3:30 Kim had a meeting with a catering company to go over a new platform that Kim might be rolling out internally! Its very exciting because it means Kim has to do less, which is always a win!

For the rest of the afternoon Kim picked up the odd job here and there but spent most of it reading up on first aid. At one point she did eat a pain au chocolate which was magnificent!

Just as Kim was about to leave all of the stuff from upstairs was brought down so Kim put things away after it was unpacked.

Whole Foods Food

Curtis got home and Kim was doing her training, so she focused on that for a bit until she got hungry.

Kim wanted to get Chinese, but they didn’t have what she wanted, so she went to Whole Foods and got some butter chicken and rice with a naan bread there.

Once we got home, we watched a 1 hour long YouTube video and Kim ate her food.

We then watched a bit more of YouTube and the relaxed for the rest of the evening.

Place 72 – Day 65: Vancouver, BC – Afternoon Cocktails

Vancouver Flea Market

We wanted to go to the Vancouver flea market today to have a look around. This place was a 30 minute walk from home. The weather wasn’t great but we risked a walk anyway.

The flea market is near the train station, so we walked to there, and a little bit beyond, to get to it.

Once we got there, it looked a bit dodgy, and then there was an entry fee!

We quickly changed our minds and walked towards the city instead.

Afternoon Cocktails

We decided to stop at a place we walk past on the way to and from work for a coffee.

We went in and then realised it was a lot more fancy then we thought!

We were going to have coffee, but then we were informed it was happy hour, so we thought we better have cocktails.

Curtis got a Moscow Mule and Kim got a frozen slushy type drink which had red wine in it.

We spent a while here just chatting and then finally headed back towards home.

We had nothing planned for dinner, so we grabbed some spaghetti, mushrooms and alfredo sauce and had that along with some incredible French bagette (toasted with olive oil and balsamic) and a side salad.

We watched TV and played some games and then headed to bed at a good time.
