Place 72 – Day 943: Vancouver, BC – It’s Gonna Get Warm!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis didn’t have a meeting right away today, nor did he go to the office, so he was up at normal time and had some time to get adjusted.

A lot of the day was project work, getting something ready for a launch, but it was very fun! Curtis found out about more new features and just really enjoyed getting it setup.

He got some Norwegian homework done and a lot of tickets until lunch time.

After lunch, Curtis had meeting which was about a new potential software and gathering some information around that.

After that, Curtis did some admin and then had an impromptu meeting about ANOTHER software and a project has stemmed from that.

Kim’s Day

Kim was in back to back meetings today, but they were all super interesting and productive!! The first was to discuss a role and the next steps as it looks like there might be a candidate that people really like! She then had a quick check on with her teammate and then joined the department weekly update meeting.

Kim then joined a meeting to discuss another candidate in a different role and the next steps there before joining the weekly recruitment meeting. Kim then had a couple of IT style meetings, one where she was learning some really interesting stuff and the other was helping a teammate with a couple of systems. She then joined another recruitment meeting to discuss a role and how it might change going forward.

For the rest of the afternoon Kim had check ins with managers and employees who were reaching various stages of their probationary period and she had a call with a vendor too. To finish the work day Kim had a weekly check in with her teammate before having a chat with another teammate to perfect a LinkedIn post for a new hire within her team!

In the evening Kim did a little planning for an event and had a check in with a manager about their employees.

Evening

Kim har pole, so Curtis played some games and then made dinner. We had couscous with chicken, vegetables and feta cheese. A perfect combo for a warm day! Very Middle Eastern!

We ate that, watched some TV and relaxed. Crazy that it’s Friday tomorrow, it’s meant to start getting VERY hot, too.

Place 72 – Day 937: Vancouver, BC – Ouch, My Knee!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had a meeting right at 09:00, another workshop with an external vendor. This didn’t as long as expected, which was great, so Curtis had some time to get some tickets and other things done.

In the afternoon, Curtis had a team meeting to discuss projects and then once that was done, he went out to collect a package. On the way out, he managed to hit his knee pretty hard on the door and it REALLY hurt. He now has a bruised and swollen knee, so good job to him!

Once he got home, he had a team happy hour and just had some really good conversations there.

Curtis played some games whilst Kim was out having fun!

Kim’s Day

To starr the day Kim joined a meeting to discuss job descriptions with a hiring manager and her teammate. She then had a one month check in chat with a new employee before reviewing another job description with her teammate.

She then joined and interview and had a quick review with the same teammate after. They also had a chat about plans for the next week or so. Kim then had another one month check in followed by a chat to end a new starters first week. Everyone she spoke to was extremely complimentary.

Kim then was told she would be able to get a professional headshot taken so she quickly started getting ready for that and then popped out to pick up a couple of things from some stores. Once she got home Kim had another quick meeting to discuss a new starter with their manager. It was such a great conversation.

Kim was then picked up by a colleague and they went over to another colleagues house (to sit in the garden!). She had a wonderful evening in the sun in the garden having great conversations, while distanced, with her fantastic work friends. It was so lovely to have an evening with an ounce of normality. After a couple of hours a few people drove to a park to get pizza and hang out there for a little while longer.

Evening

Once Kim got home, we were going to order food but it was a bit late, so we made some easy food here and ate that whilst relaxing and watching some TV. We had a lot to watch, so it was a great relaxing Friday night!

Place 72 – Day 895: Vancouver, BC – Double Curry

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had a brief chat with someone at 09:15 and after that he had some security data work to do as well as some tickets and admin.

At 12:00, Curtis had a team building session with his team in which each person had to pick another and write out answers to questions on their behalf, to see if they could get it right. This was pretty entertaining.

Curtis then played a game of werewolf which was also pretty fun and funny.

Once that was finished, Kim picked up some chicken katsu curry for lunch as Curtis got a $40 lunch budget from work for the team building.

We ended up getting enough food for lunch AND dinner, which we can’t complain about. That being said, the food wasn’t even that good.

Curtis’ after then consisted of another meeting with his team to wrap up projects for the last couple of weeks and then he did some end of week admin and some more ticket work.

Curtis just played games whilst Kim was out window shopping.

Kim’s Day

Kim had a lazy day! She slept in and then had some breakfast while she watched part of a movie. She answered a few work questions while she watched the movie too. Then she popped out to pick up some lunch.

After having lunch with Curtis Kim finished her movie and then packed up all the things going to the charity shop. After dropping things off at the shop Kim had an afternoon of window shopping and walking around downtown! It was lovely

Evening

As mentioned, we had curry leftover for dinner, so we ate that and watched some TV together. Kim did need to get some admin done once she got back from the shops, so she did that before dinner.

Place 72 – Day 485: Vancouver, BC – Celebrations

Curtis’ Day

Today was the final day of the virtual retreat. There were meetings from 08:30 and there were a wide range of topics, including work things but also some non work topics, such as information on Bitcoin which was very interesting.

In the late afternoon, there were 2 more meetings. The first was a social gathering for anyone in the Vancouver office. This was a virtual holiday party. There were awards handed out as well as some quizzes and games!

Right after that, Curtis had a similar thing with his team for about 1.5 hours which was really fun and nice to hang out with them.

Kim’s Day

Kim had a lazy work day today, she started by sending an email to a candidate and drawing up their new starter paperwork. Then she called the candidate to set up a meeting for the afternoon between them and someone in the company so they can have an informal chat. To finish the morning Kim set up the accounts and then sent over the offer paperwork!

In the afternoon Kim organised some things for an event in the new year. She started by making a quick version of the invite and purring together some of the information people will need.

For the rest of the afternoon Kim did lots of little admin things that she had been meaning to do for a while. She started a vendor list, made a few reports, started a new job description, did some research and organised a few meetings for in the new year and next week.

Evening

We decided on Korean for dinner so we ordered some Korean chicken.

We played some SuperHot until it arrived and then watched Megamind whilst we ate.

After that, we watched the final episode of The Queen’s Gambit and then we watched the first episode of Season 2 of Hjem Til Jul a Norwegian Netflix show about Christmas, which we have been waiting for!

We watched some YouTube and other TV, as well as played some games for the remainder of the evening.

Place 72 – Day 443: Vancouver, BC – No Work on Friday!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis’ day was busy!

Curtis spent most of the day doing project work, which went really well! He did this with some colleagues and got this pretty much all done.

Along with doing the project, Curtis had a couple of team meetings which went on for a while.

The day was very productive and he was very happy with how it went!

Kim’s Day

Kims new job is mainly a 4 day work week! She can use a Friday as an overspill if she needs to, but the goal is to be more efficient. So Kim had a lazy morning before spending a bit of time researching more PR stuff and a little more about a software for work.

As she had an open afternoon Kim organised to meet an old colleague and good friend for lunch. Kim picked up the lunches and they met near the office, but walked down to the seawall to sit in the sun and have a great catch up. It was so fun and wonderful to relax and spend some time together.

On the way home from lunch Kim grabbed some coffees and then watched a bit of TV to warm up from outside.

Kim had promised her friend that she would being some homemade cookies to lunch but she forgot. So Kim popped back out to drop off the cookies. On the way home Kim stopped at a couple of shops to look around.

Evening

We ordered some Indian food for dinner, we haven’t ordered from there for a while, so we were excited! It was a great curry as always, so that was excellent.

We played some games and watched some TV this evening. We have some plans this weekend so that should be good, providing nothing gets closed due to COVID-19!

Place 72 – Day 436: Vancouver, BC – A Virtual Team Lunch

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had a company-wide meeting at 09:00 this morning so he sat through that. Once that was done, he did a lot of tickets and also had another meeting at 10:30.

At 11:30, Curtis joined a Zoom call with his team and everyone got to expense some lunch to have whilst everyone is chatting!

We got some food from a Lebanese place nearby and it was terrific food! Kim had some as well but obviously only Curtis’ food will be expensed.

It was a really nice non work related conversation and it went by pretty fast.

Curtis had to do an offboard after this and then some other tickets and admin for the afternoon.

Kim’s Day

In the morning Kim didn’t do much, she enjoyed the final lazy morning before she goes back to full time work on Monday! She is so excited! Just before lunchtime Kim went out and picked up the food.

After lunch Kim watched a little TV and then played a video game for a bit, it was really fun!

Kim spent the rest of the afternoon reading a document that explains part of the immigration process. As Kim and Curtis don’t have degrees they are hoping to use a provincial nomination program that will give them a better chance at getting Permanent Residency.

This avenue would also allow them to apply for a bridging visa as a placeholder for PR, which would then give them time to finish the application without leaving Canada. So Kim took a lot of time this afternoon to thoroughly read the document and research things she didn’t understand.

Kim has also been messaging someone who did the same process last year with the same level of education, and they have been a great help. Its so nice to have someone to ask about how long things took and rheir next steps and any bumps in the road they may have encountered! Kim has been worried about the tight time frame between now and when the Visa ends, so hopefully this process will help.

Having done a little more reading and asking of questions, a lot of Kims concerns are now slightly less daunting, which is great!

Evening

We went for a little walk in the late evening just to stretch our legs and also to get some food.

We got a chicken pot pie each from Urban Fare as Kim has had them before and said they are good.

We ate those when we got home and watched some TV for the evening, including Truth Seekers, the new show from Nick Frost & Simon Pegg.

Place 72 – Day 429: Vancouver, BC – Peruvian Food!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis did a lot of tickets in the morning and then was able to get his project completed with his colleagues which was excellent!

Head a long team meeting at 14:00 and then did a little more work before finishing up for the day.

Kim’s Day

Kim got up and went straight out for a walk with a friend! They met near a coffee shop, both got a drink and walked along the seawall. It was raining and an hour into the walk they started getting cold so turned back and picked up the pace a bit.

She had planned to head to a shop after the walk, but Kim was so wet and cold she decided to head home to warm up and get dry! When she got home she called home to speak with her parents and it was so nice!

In the afternoon Kim eventually headed out to lush and had a little look around. She got a few samples too! So she is excited to try those.

Peruvian Food!

We ordered some Peruvian food for dinner, as it’s something new to try!

We pretty much got the same food, which was a meat with a great sauce/seasoning which tops fries and comes with rice.

Curtis had steak and Kim had chicken and we also shared an empanada. The food was really excellent and we’ll be heading out to get it again for sure!

We ate this and watched the new Borat film, which we had seen was meant to be pretty good but we didn’t really think it was that good, to be honest.

We then went out and got Kim a blizzard ice cream from DQ just down the road.

Once we got back, we watched The Great British Bake Off and then relaxed watching some other TV for the rest of the night.

Place 72 – Day 408: Vancouver, BC – Returning Stuff & Mexican Food

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had a meeting pretty early on, which was just a 1 on 1 with his manager.

After that, Curtis had a team meeting followed by a meeting regarding a project.

Curtis was then meant to have a meeting to discuss project requirements with someone but they never showed up, so Curtis and his manager had a chat instead.

Curtis had to amend some documentation for a project and then did some tickets for the remainder of the day.

Kim’s Day

Today Kim applied to a fair few jobs so in the afternoon Kim popped to a shopping centre to return something. It was nice to get out in the sunshine and go for a drive, the visit to the shop was nice and quick too.

Then Kim dropped the car off in the parking before heading up the road to pick up the takeaway!

Mexican Food

As Kim was on her way home, she went to a Mexican place just down the road, which we had been to a sister store of in Whistler when we were there.

Kim got some quesadillas and Curtis got some tacos.

The tacos weren’t great to be honest, but Kim enjoyed her quesadillas.

We watched some TV and relaxed for the evening. It’s Friday so super relax time!

Place 72 – Day 202: Vancouver, BC – Office Olympics!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had an incredibly quiet day.

He blocked some email addresses that were sending spam and phishing emails to the company and then got the Mac he was working on yesterday to ensure everything was correct on it.

Once he did that, he got another new Mac and tested the setup on it as there were some issues last time.

Curtis didn’t do too much after this, but went and joined the rest of the office for pizza!

After pizza, Curtis did a few small things and then it was office Olympics time!

This was a team event and there were 3 teams of 3.

Event 1 was a chair relay, which is fairly self explanatory.

Curtis’ team got 2nd in this.

After the chair relay, there was a drink break where everyone made margaritas.

The 2nd event was a can shooting event using NERF guns.

Curtis’ team did poorly on this, getting last place.

The 3rd event was a wall sit, which Curtis’ team won, thanks to a valiant effort from one person.

After this, it was a mind exercise in which 3 riddles/word puzzles had to be answered.

Curtis’ team got just 1/3 and last place again.

The last ‘bonus round’ was paper aeroplanes.

The goal was to get them as far as possible. Each team had 1 minute to make a paper aeroplane.

Curtis’ team also didn’t do great in this event and overall got stomped in the whole event, but it was so much fun!

Curtis sat and had drinks with a few people that were still around and then walked to meet Kim so we could walk home.

Kim’s Day

Kim doesn’t have much to report today.

She went to her class and learned a lot…it gave her a headache but she learned new things!

KFC

We got home and accidentally had a nap!

Curtis planned to watch hockey, which was starting at 19:00, and he was lucky enough to wake up just in time.

Curtis watched hockey and Kim just relaxed more and then we both weirdly decided that we fancied KFC, so Kim went out to get that, as well as fuel.

We ate KFC and watched some TV for the evening. Nothing particularly special.

Place 72 – Day 135: Vancouver, BC – Weekend Already?

Curtis’ Day

Curtis got to work at the perfect time and then spent basically all day doing the same thing!

He was trying to export something and import it to a new place.

Unfortunately, it didn’t work that way and Curtis had to try and get it done in different ways.

Curtis did get some other project work done, too.

Curtis walked home fast to watch hockey!

Kim’s Day

Kim spent most of her day doing the same two things, sending things out via mail and sorting through her expenses. She did also catch up on emails in the morning and in the afternoon Kim went through and sorted a few of her flagged emails, which was great!

For lunch Kim went out with a friend in the office. They both had burgers and had a great catch up! When Kim got back, she handed out more ice lollies and ice cream!

Double Silks Training

After she got home, Kim went off to Silks!

She had a really good time, though she definitely felt it!

Once she got back, we watched more of The Good Place.

It’s crazy that’s it is Friday already and we have a couple of days off again…This time of year is odd.
