Place 72 – Day 98: Vancouver, BC – All The Free Food!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had a busy day ahead of him! He started the day doing a few tickets from other days as well as a couple of new ones that came in.

Once those were done, he had to order some IT equipment and then continued on imaging an old laptop for reuse.

Curtis finished the laptop and then moved on to something a bit more challenging, once he was done with lunch.

Curtis was trying to get a virtual machine to run on a server which people could all remote in to and use whenever they needed. It took a while to figure out, but he managed to realise that the hard drive was only recognisable on mac and once he plugged it in, the file was in the incorrect format.

Curtis had to re import the file into a free virtual machine manager and re export it as a different file type. This took over an hour to do and whilst he was doing this, he got a colleague to setup a server to put it on, which he will do on Monday.

Curtis went and had some drinks with his colleagues and even had a little bit of whiskey!

Curtis walked home alone as Kim was still at work, but once he got home he went on the xbox and had a long chat with his friend Shane (who was his best man) who he hasn’t spoken to in while.

It was amazing for them to catch up!

Kim’s Day

Kim got in before 9 to ensure that the boardroom was ready for the scout to come in and do their checks. When they came in, Kim showed them upstairs and left him to it.

She realised that she forgot her breakfast, so nipped across the road to the supermarket to grab a chocolate croissant. It was so tasty and just what Kim wanted!

After Kim ate her breakfast, she sorted out some of the fruit for the sangria. She set up 2 jugs with some of the frozen fruit to allow for it to soak up some of the alcohol for the duration of the day.

After this Kim got prepared for her meeting this morning in regards to her project and checked on the scout to make sure he was all set.

In the meeting Kim learned that the project was at a different phase than she was initatly led to believe it was at. Kim thought her role was to encourage other teams to complete certain tasks whereas her role at the moment is to ensure that her department is up to date and can then be used as a model for other departments. She was able to realign her goals and and efforts to reflect what is actually needed now. It was a very successful and useful meeting.

Just after the meeting the catering for another meeting arrived. Kim sorted it all out and let then know that the food was waiting in the meeting room and went back to going through some project stuff. A few minutes later someone came back to Kim with a spare burrito as someone had ordered one and not come to the meeting! What a win!

Kim decided to take her lunch then and relax and enjoy a free crispy chicken burrito. It was a good lunch!

When she finished her lunch Kim continued working with her new information on the project. She then popped out to pick up some cider and wine for the Friday afternoon drinks and pick up the mail.

Kim then organised with the film crew and the building managers how the filming would work logistically.

It was then Kim’s favourite time of week where she got to make sangria and set up all of the drinks! Kim even made a virgin sangria too! She then finished an email, had a chat with a colleague and then joined everyone until 6pm for drinks. It was really easy going and fun!

Pizza & Hidden Figures

We ate a frozen pizza for dinner as it was late and we are lazy!

We watched a couple of YouTube videos and then watched the film Hidden Figures which was a pretty good film!

Place 72 – Day 79: Vancouver, BC – More studying & Free Starbucks!

Studying

We woke up around 11:0 but had a terrible night sleep! Neither of us could get to sleep at a good time so didn’t get many hours in, really.

We had a delicious breakfast muffin with sausage, egg & cheese in and a hash brown.

We watched a little bit of TV and then Kim tried to go outside to study but it was too bright so she couldn’t actually see the words so she went back inside.

Free Starbucks

Curtis played games for most of the day again today, until we just needed to get out of the house so we went to Starbucks for a coffee.

Curtis had a free coffee on his account so he got his for free but had to pay for Kim’s. We also got a key cut for our apartment so we don’t have to keep changing them around all the time.

Paprika Pork

We got back home and Kim studied a bit more until we got hungry.

Once we wanted food, Kim made paprika pork as the last time we had it, it was incredible.

We ate that and then watched a bit of TV until around 22:00 which is when Kim then went for a shower and got ready for going to her first aid course tomorrow.

As we didn’t sleep great last night, we decided we would sleep early as it is important to be awake tomorrow!

Place 72 – Day 78: Vancouver, BC – Study, Study, Study

We woke up without an alarm for the first time in what felt like forever and it was around 10:00 so a perfect time.

We had a pain au chocolat each which Kim picked up from Urban Fare. they’re great, covered in chocolate and big!

Kim then spent most of the day studying for her first aid course she is doing this week coming, whilst Curtis played games.

At one point, we did speak with Kim’s parents, briefly, and then we went to Starbucks (one we didn’t realise was there and is closer!) Purely so we could order off our phones and get a deal for a free drink!

We went out the house to the shop to get stuff for dinner and for the week.

Once we got that and then got back, we got our food started.

Curtis found a recipe for a simple yet delicious dish with minced beef.

This was a mix of a soy sauce, sugar, ginger, garlic, chili flakes & probably some other stuff other than that, it was delicous though!

Kim did a little more studying and then we had a small glass of the wine we had left whilst watching some TV.

Not a very interesting day but Kim only got the study material end of last week and needs to know it for this week!

Place 72 – Day 76: Vancouver, BC – Company Summer BBQ

Curtis’ Day

Curtis was only working until 13:00 as there was a company BBQ from then, so he had a shorter day.

Curtis got a couple of tickets sorted as well as got some admin done with regards to purchases.

Curtis spent some time looking at security configurations as well as configuring a spare laptop.

At 13:00, the BBQ events began. Every team (Curtis’ was yellow) sat together and were given clues. These clues led to places and the whole team had to be in a photo in front of that place. Yellow team took some time to plan a walking route and then set off.

Curtis’ team didn’t rush, but got all the photos done with 5 minutes to spare and were the 2nd to last team back.

After this, it was drinks time! The BBQ was on top of the building in which the company apartment is located, way up on the 46th floor with a great view.

Shortly after getting settled, the games began. The first game was to eat a doughnut off of a string without using your hands.

After this challenge, there was a small break and then a planking challenge. Curtis took part in that one for his team bit he didn’t do well…He was first out! The winner managed to do over 5 minutes!

After the planking challenge, there was a small break and then there was a balloon challenge. Each person had to tie a balloon to their leg and try and pop each others. This didn’t go well as everyone kept cheating!

The final challenge was a team one in which there was a large bucket of water at the front of a line of people and the first person had to fill a cup with water and pass it down the line, over their head, with everyone’s eyes closed. The last person then had to pour it into a small bucket and first team to fill the bucket won. Safe to say, Curtis’ team did not win but got very wet.

Curtis stayed until the end just chatting with people and eating the burgers and hotdogs, then he stayed to tidy and clean up. He helped take things down to the car and then walked home.

Curtis noticed he left his jacket back there, so hopefully he can get it back tomorrow.

Kim’s Day

Kim left home and headed the opposite direction to work. She is taking a first aid course for the whole of next week so had to go and pick up the work book / reading material. So she hopped on the skytrain to the first aid centre, grabbed the 2 binders for her colleague and herself, hopped back on the skytrain into the city and was at work before 9:15!

For the course Kim also needs another workbook so she printed all 300 pages off so she can study for the rest of the week, weekend and into next week. She tried reading it on the laptop but it was straining her eyes.

For the rest of the morning Kim went through quotes for a few upcoming things the social team has in the pipeline.

There were 2 meetings with catering arriving today. They both arrived early again which meant kim was sat smelling pizzas and burritos for about 30 minutes. She then set up the catering in each of the rooms the meetings were in. A couple of minutes later the pizzas were in the kitchen as the meeting had been cancelled! It was great news, Kim and the rest of her team grabbed some lunch and sat up on the roof to enjoy some sunshine.

When she got back to her desk Kim sorted out some post that had been left for her. Just as she finished this a whole new batch of things to post arrived so she got them done too.

At 3:30 Kim had a meeting with a catering company to go over a new platform that Kim might be rolling out internally! Its very exciting because it means Kim has to do less, which is always a win!

For the rest of the afternoon Kim picked up the odd job here and there but spent most of it reading up on first aid. At one point she did eat a pain au chocolate which was magnificent!

Just as Kim was about to leave all of the stuff from upstairs was brought down so Kim put things away after it was unpacked.

Whole Foods Food

Curtis got home and Kim was doing her training, so she focused on that for a bit until she got hungry.

Kim wanted to get Chinese, but they didn’t have what she wanted, so she went to Whole Foods and got some butter chicken and rice with a naan bread there.

Once we got home, we watched a 1 hour long YouTube video and Kim ate her food.

We then watched a bit more of YouTube and the relaxed for the rest of the evening.

Place72 – Day 73: Vancouver, BC – Free Coffee, Forgotten Phone & Costco Run

Curtis’ Day

Curtis got to work with 5 minutes to spare and was non stop from that point on.

He had a new starter to setup as well as 2 people to offboard.

At 11:00, Curtis helped someone move desks and convert it to a standing desk. Once this was done, Curtis got bought a coffee by the lady, which was lovely!

After the coffee, Curtis had some more of the onboarding to complete and then it was lunch time.

Kim met Curtis down at a Vietnamese place near Curtis’ work as they do a great Banh Mi. We got those but because it was far from Kim’s work, she had to walk back as soon as she got it.

Curtis went back to work after lunch and continued to be busy. He had to order a lot of items as well as some software.

At 14:30 he updated the AV system in 2 rooms and checked on them periodically.

There were a lot of small issues today so Curtis spent quite a bit of time sorting those, too.

Curtis’ day finished at 17:00 and he walked to meet Kim.

Kim’s Day

As Kim was walking to work she checked to see if her phone was in her bag and found that it wasn’t! This was not the best start to the day.

When the fruit arrived Kim put it all away, she ordered a lot of different items from normal so it will be a nice change.

Someone mentioned that they couldnt find any brown sugar so Kim then spent some time sorting out the sugar! Nor exciting but everything is much easier to find now! Plus its easier to know what the stock levels are.

Kim then took some time to set up next weeks order and contact a few other vendors about some possible additional items they would like to stock!

It was a colleueges birthday on Thursday, but she was away on leave so in the late morning Kim and another colluege ran to a bakery to pick up a beautiful red velvet cake and a card! As they got in the elevators who catches the door at the last second? The birthday girl! Sods law!

When they got back upstairs the girls prepared the cake and plates to ‘surprise’ the birthday girl! They got a few people together sang happy birthday and then ate cake!

Kim sorted a few things out before heading to near Curtis’ work to meet him for lunch. Not so easy to do without a phone as they had not really discussed a time to place all that well. They eventually found each other and sat for a little while.

When Kim got back she spent most of her afternoon sorting our various different social things. She set up the agenda for the social team meeting later this week, went over a few things for the upcoming summer party and sent out an invite to a meeting next week. She also ordered some catering for next weeks meeting!

At the end of the day Kim spent some time going through her phones messages. It was not interesting and mainly consisted of the dead space before someone hangs up. There was one call where the phone was just recording background noise of people singing in an office, Kim stopped listening somewhere around the 2 minute mark.

Costco Run

We met up from work and walked down to Costco, primarily to get meat but also a few other things like cheese and a cereal.

We spent some money there and then walked back, boxs & bags in hand with all the items we bought.

Too Much Food

For dinner, we has a big chicken salad with a side of Kraft mac and cheese. Turns out it was way too much food!

We were very stuffed, so we just sat and watched Vikings in the evening.

Place 72 – Day 69: Vancouver, BC – Free Pastries & Free Slurpies!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis’ day started well as the coffee company that delivers to his work had a ‘customer appreciation day’ so they took a lot of pastries to Curtis’ office, which were delicious!

Curtis did a lot of task that took a long time as well as tasks that were a bit more mundane.

Curtis had a 1.5 hour meeting to attend, but understood very little.

After that meeting, Curtis had lunch and then had another short meeting.

Curtis found out more information about a new user so had to complete the rest of that as we as setup 2 desks.

Curtis left a little later than usual as it was a busy day. That being said, it didn’t feel all that productive.

Kim’s Day

Kim arrived in the office and took some fruit up to the day long meeting that was going on on the top floor.

A few more coach quotes came in overnight from the UK so Kim put these together on her spreadsheet and sent it back across to her colleague.

As there is another busy week coming up in 2 weeks kim and her colleague are getting a jump on the catering orders and making sure everyone will be fed. So Kim requested a quote for the Ontario office.

Kim also spent her morning catching up on emails and other ad hoc tasks that cropped up.

Then it was pizza time! A team was hosting a lunch and learn so Kim set up the corner of the office with chairs, the projector and the cool conference speaker / microphone / webcam thing. Then when the pizza arrived she set all that up too.

A few minutes in to the lunch and learn the whole meeting, of about 20 people, came downstairs and joined the lunch and learn. However, they were not accounted for when the pizza was ordered so there wasn’t enough for them. This meant that Kim and her colleague had to source catering for 20 people ASAP. They agreed to call a different pizza place who could deliver within 30 to 45 minutes. This was perfect timing because their meetings were due to start back up in 45 minutes, meaning that the pizza would either arrive just before the meeting started or just after.

Kim used this opportunity of a delayed lunch to sort out the afternoon coffee and grab them skme.drinks to go with their lunch. She was going to take the coffee up 30 minutes after the pizza would arrive so decided its easier to get it all done at once.

Kim noticed the drinks fridge was looking a little bare and nakey, due to all the extra visitors we had on site, so she decided to fill it up. If there are a few things Kim can do well they are, stock rotation and fridge stocking! Usually this is done by the supplier, but it’ll save him some time tomorrow and everyone has cold drinks at the ready in the meantime. Its a win for everyone!

Just after this, at just gone 2 Kim realised that she was yet to take a proper lunch. She had snacked during the day but decided to take some time and have a sit down and a breather.

After lunch Kim had a little paperwork to do so she sat down and finished that.

Kim the spent some time in the afternoon setting up next weeks fruit and milk order. She. Has gone mad and ordered cherries and even a watermelon! It will be an exciting week for sure!

Towards the end of the day the upstairs meeting finished and they brought down all of the stuff Kim had taken up so she spent some time sorting all of that out.

Evening Errands

We had a couple of things to do after work.

We needed to go to a hotel briefly, so we did that, and then we left there and got some money out for something on Saturday.

After getting some cash, we went to homesense to get some refillable salt and pepper grinders.

We left Homesense and walked back home. On the way we stopped in at 7-Eleven to get our free slurpie each as it was free slurpie day!

We walked home and had spaghetti bolognese for dinner.

After dinner, we watched a bit of TV and then went for a nice evening walk around 08:30 for 30 minutes or so.

We got back, watched a bit of TV and then went to bed.

Curtis has to setup the boardroom at the office for 09:00 for a global company meeting, so he is getting to the office for 08:00…early start for him (well, earlier than it has been).

Place 72 – Day 42: Vancouver, BC – Free Pizza, Busy Project Work & Software Testing

Curtis’ Day

Once Curtis arrived at work, it was non-stop from there.

He had a few cases from yesterday as well as some new ones from this morning and then he had someone walk over and mention that they are having wifi issues, so Curtis ended up spending a lot of the day investigating that.

Curtis had to source a new hard drive for a server and helped out with changing some processes.

At lunch, we both met together and got a free slice of pizza with a drink and a brownie! There is a pizza chain here that has that as a deal at the moment.

After lunch, Curtis had been messaged a few times and so had some stuff to do.

Whilst he was doing that, he wiped a Mac and started setting it up.

At 14:45, Curtis tested some of the in-house made software as if he was a user and then he got to give some feedback, which he thinks may help, which is good. He really enjoyed doing this and can’t wait to do it in the future, too.

Curtis spent the rest of the afternoon investigating the wifi issue and doing some admin before taking a bit of a break and having a beer with colleagues.

Curtis walked home on his own as Kim was at busy at work.

Kim’s Day

Kim got into work early and had some breakfast before starting her day.

Kim spent the morning tackling a few administrative tasks before spending some time playing around with the new aspect of the project so that she is able to be of use next week when people have questions.

When she got back from lunch Kim then went to a couple of shops to set up for the Friday afternoon drinks! Just grabbing a few drinks and some snacks for people to enjoy.

She spent the afternoon working on her project, holding a meeting with IT, doing admin and creating a mini tutorial video to help people navigate things come Monday. There is a section of the project that will take place over the weekend so there were a few loose ends to tie up and thinks to prepare for the coming weeks.

Kim was so engrossed and focused on getting it all sorted she completely missed stopping for Friday drinks at 4! She managed to finish the final task at exactly 5, then had to send a couple of emails and was then finally able to head to the kitchen for a well deserved sit down, wine and chat.

Whiskey & Toasties

We just chilled out this evening, playing games and watching TV shows.

Kim was kind enough to buy some whiskey, so we cracked that open too!
