Place 72 – Day 905: Vancouver, BC – Please Just Work!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had to start his day trying to fix the things he did last week for his project (again!).

The setup at his company is a little odd, so there are a few extra steps that no one actually knew about that he missed out so it wasn’t working quite yet. Once he and his team figured this out, he was able to fix it and he hopes it works now, but it’s tough to test.

After he did that, he had his usual weekly team meeting and then he did a bunch of tickets before he had some lunch.

After lunch, Curtis was surprised with having to do an integration with 2 pieces of software, but it was super easy, just took a bit of time.

Once that was done, it was time for some more tickets and general admin.

Kim’s Day

Kim started her day with a little admin before having a team meeting. She then got a fair amount of paperwork done and managed to organise a survey to learn how to better support one of the teams.

She then had a quick catch up with one of her teammates before having lunch and then joining an interview. After that Kim had a check in with a couple of the executive team members before joining a second interview of the day.

To finish the day Kim joined a meeting discussing two new roles and then sat down with the team to discuss interviews that happened that day and review some of the pipeline of candidates.

Evening

We had planned to have a different dinner, but it takes too long and Kim had to work late, so we had some chicken with rice and vegetables in sweet chilli sauce.

We watched TV a bit and Kim had to do a little bit more work. We also and some admin to get done ourselves, so a nice busy start to the week for us.

Place 72 – Day 886: Vancouver, BC – Laptops, All Day

Curtis’ Day

Curtis headed right to the office this morning as he had some things to get done there.

He started by setting up a laptop and getting together equipment to send out with the laptop.

Whilst doing that, Curtis did some tickets and other things, too.

Someone then dropped off their laptop and Curtis and to wipe and re-setup that laptop as it was having some issues. That didn’t actually take as long as expected, so that gave him some extra time.

The person came and picked up their laptop in the late afternoon and Curtis was able to give them that with no issues.

Curtis then headed home around 16:30 and when he got home, he had lunch as he hadn’t had it yet today!

Curtis then watched hockey whilst Kim did some work.

Kim’s Day

To start the day Kim joined a meeting about a new projects one of her colleagues might be working on she then joined a recruitment meeting but only her teammate showed up, so they had a quick chat and check in before Kim joined an interview.

After the interview and the review Kim went to a team meeting where everyone gave updates about projects they are working on. She went from this into another interview and review before completing some paperwork and sending it out.

After a quick lunch Kim had two catch ups with teammates to see how they are doing and update each other on projects. Kim then joined her final interview of the day, has the review and then completed some more paperwork.

Evening

We had potato, peas and mushrooms for dinner and then chilled out. We both had very long, busy days so we needed to just zone out.

Place 72 – Day 580: Vancouver, BC – Fixing A Toilet

Curtis’ Day

Curtis went right to the office when he was ready so he could get a laptop setup and equipment sent out.

It took very little time to get the equipment together as the person didn’t want too much, but it did take time to get the laptop setup, but was able to do that and get home for around 12:15.

Once he was home, he was being asked some questions about how to do something so he had to take a look at how to do that and then it was lunch time.

After lunch, Curtis had some more tickets to do as well as an offboard which ended up taking a while.

During this time, we had a plumber come and replace a seal on the toilet. The new owner of the apartment found out that others in the building are having an issue with the toilet seals, so they thought it would be best to get it replaced.

Once that was done, Curtis finished up the offboard and was done for the day.

Kim’s Day

Kim had a busy day today! She started with a HR heavy morning with an interview, meeting about recruitment and onboarding a new starter. She then presented at the weekly meeting too.

The busy morning continued with a project meeting and then a surprise meeting with another colleague after where they went over a few things they have been working on.

In the afternoon Kim had many more meeting from a catch up with a teammate, a call with IT and a call with a couple of the executive team to discuss some projects. To finish the day Kim worked on contracts, job descriptions and reviewing candidates.

Evening

We sat and ate some chicken pasta fairly late into the evening and we watched ourselves some more Drive To Survive. We’re close to finishing the most recent season which is a shame!

We watched some other TV and then headed to bed.

Place 72 – Day 460: Vancouver, BC – Where Did The Time Go?

Curtis’ Day

Curtis woke up and his ear was still blocked, so that wasn’t ideal!

Curtis had a meeting in the morning with an external company and someone from his company to try and fix an issue, which they got fixed!

Once he did that, Curtis had a team meeting for about an hour and then jumped into a call with someone to look at an issue they were getting.

Once that was done, Curtis did a bit of work and then had some lunch.

The afternoon was little quieter, but he did get some spam emails blocked and reported and did some tickets and some admin.

Kim’s Day

Kim drew up an email and sent it out to everyone in regards to a charity donation. The plan initially was to have people drop things off in the office and then Kim would take it and do one big donation to a charity on behalf of the company. As that is looking less possible Kim found addresses, times and information for needed items for people to make their own donations.

For some of the morning Kim also worked on the onboarding process. She wrote notes of things she needs more information on and who should be allocated items for new starters.

Around midday Kim worked on moving a few recurring meetings around. She moved the weekly HR meeting forward by half and hour to be able to move the social time to 1pm so more people can join.

In the afternoon Kim put together some information on the provincial nomination process for her company so they know what the next steps are and also have an idea of what they need to do.

Towards the end of the day Kim received new information to go over for the facilities project. So she started going through and adding more notes. Then at 430 Kim had a call she went through each line of the spreadsheet with the person who is helping and sent it over.

After the call Kim made a to do list and some notes for tomorrow and the rest of the week.

Evening

We had leftovers from yesterday’s roast dinner and watched some TV and played some games as usual.

We started watching Alex Rider on Prime Video because the advert looked quite good and it’s based on some books that Curtis read when he was younger.

The time flew today! We both noticed multiple times that the time had just disappeared throughout the day.

Place 72 – Day 453: Vancouver, BC – Changing Many Processes

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had a meeting in the morning which went on for quite a while with his team.

After that meeting, Curtis caught up with emails and messages and then had to re-fix the issue he fixed from last week, which took most of the day, though there was a meeting in between to start a project with regards to his Business Analyst work.

Overall, the day went fast but was successful! He got things done and was busy for most of the day.

Kim’s Day

A new starter joined today so Kim got ready by going through notes and having a quick call with her teammate. They then both joined the call with the new starter gave them the chance to ask questions and helped out where they could.

Kim the prepared for a few other meetings in the day by making notes of things to discuss and researching ahead of the meeting. She also added a new meeting to a lot of peoples calendars.

Kim joined a meeting that was about a new role people want to hire for. This opened the door and now there are three new roles. Kim will now research salaries and built up base job descriptions for these positions, its very exciting!

Shortly after this Kim had a team meeting and she decided that today was the day to inform her manager that she is applying for PR and will need help from the company. Kim had hardly finished the question and her manager had already said ‘for sure’ so thats a big weight off of her shoulders and she is over the moon that the company will help. Kim is really enjoying her job and would much rather not leave! They also discussed the winter party and a facilities project Kim is working on.

Later in the afternoon Kim had a meeting with a manager to discuss their requirements for recruitment, onboarding and IT equipment their team will need. It went well and Kim has some good direction for her new onboarding process.

For the rest of the afternoon Kim worked on the facilities project, booked some meetings and sent a summary to her colleague and manager as an FYI.

Evening

We had leftover lasagna for dinner along with a ceasar salad.

We watched some TV and played some games. We were pretty tired, to be honest, so we went to bed pretty early.

Place 72 – Day 446: Vancouver, BC – Broken Things!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had a busy day all in all!

He started with catching up from the weekend and other emails, then he had a long team meeting.

After that team meeting, it was pretty much lunch time!

Once he finished lunch, he had a long, long call trying to fix something he created a long time ago. This was tough to remember how to do things but there was a little bit of progress made after a 1.5 hour call!

After that, Curtis had a couple more tickets to do and some admin, then he was done for the day.

Kim’s Day

BC added new restrictions over the weekend and as a result Kim decided to take some time to research what this means and learn a little more about how it impacts work spaces. She also started making some more signs for the office that arespecific to the workspace, as well as finding some official materials.

For some of the morning Kim worked on more research for a new software, updated the spreadsheet and sent it over to her manager with some questions and for her to review.

As there are a few employees in difflocations Kim wanted to make a list of all the public holidays that the company might celebrate. At some point she will add it to the new HR software so its easily accessible for everyone.

In the afternoon Kim did a bit of organising of files and then moved on to trying to understanding the recruitment process and add a job posting to LinkedIn. However, after a number of tries Kim can’t seem to get it to post right. So she will take a look and try again tomorrow.

Evening

We had some tomato and mushroom pasta with a ceasar salad for dinner.

We then watched some TV and played some Need For Speed. After that, Kim did a bit of admin for her visa.

Place 72 – Day 320: Vancouver, BC – Thursday Is A Monday

Curtis’ Day

Curtis started the morning getting some information on how to fix an issue, which he managed to get good information on.

Curtis answered some questions and did some tickets for the rest of the morning.

After lunch, he walked into the office to fix the issue he was researching this morning.

The person had left him the laptop, which of course Curtis sanitised before and after handling. Curtis was able to get this fixed fairly quick, which was good as it was something new, and he then went back home.

Curtis got back home and did some more tickets and then an offboard.

Kim’s Day

Today is the last day to set up the office and Kim has very little to do. She printed and laminated the last few signs before moving on to putting signs on desks and meeting rooms. She did the smaller side of the building, where she put a sticker and tape on the table leg of desks being used, tape on the floor 6 feet from the chair, to show people the closest they can be. She also put the meeting room signs up and a few distancing reminders.

When Kim got into the kitchen she put up the last few signs and organised the leftover drinks for people to pick up off of a table.

Once she finished with the kitchen, Kim put a few signs up in the bathrooms before hosting a game of Skribbl while she had her lunch.

After lunch Kim and her colleague continuted to put signs on desks to show that they are being used and putting the notifications on meeting room doors.

Mid afternoon Kims manager came in to do a little paperwork and have a tour of the office, as it is totally different from when she was last in. She loved how the office looked, which was great!

After the meeting Kim and her colleague finished putting the signs up. Kim realised she forgot to print a couple of signs, so she made those and popped them up.

It doesn’t sound like a busy day, but Kim didn’t stop! It was a great day and the office is now ready to go! Kim is excited to have people back.

Weird Feeling Evening

We both felt weird this evening, and all day really, as it felt like a Sunday yesterday so today felt like a Monday even though it isn’t.

For dinner we had leftover pasta with a side of ceasar salad along with some homemade garlic bread which was the perfect addition!

We watched some during dinner and then we played a few more new games together which was fun but made time go too fast!

Kim had a bath in the evening as she felt like it and then we watched a thing or two after before sleeping.

Place 72 – Day 318: Vancouver, BC – Breaking & Fixing Things

Curtis’ Day

Curtis kicked the day off with getting a new account created for an onboard, which he hasn’t done for a long while, but he can’t do the laptop as there was none of them in Vancouver, so they have to get done in the Winnipeg office.

Curtis finished that and then did a few security things.

Once that was done, Curtis did a computer checkup which went really well.

Right after that, Curtis helped someone get their laptop removed and back onto the domain do that it works correctly.

This took a while as it wouldn’t let them log back in, so Curtis and to try a few different things and it eventually worked!

Curtis had his team meeting once that was done and then had lunch.

After lunch, Curtis did a few tickets and got some reading done, which has been a couple of weeks since he got any reading done.

Kim’s Day

Kim started her day by sorting out banks of desks. She collected up, removed and replaced extension cables on one side of the building. It took longer than planned so Kim decided to move on.

She had to sort out a few things for people returning to work so she popped to one shop and picked up a few things and as it is a surprise, Kim will be very vague. She popped to another shop and then realised that the first purchase was on her personal card! So Kim went back to the first shop, sorted that out and went back to the office to organise all the things she bought.

She showed her colleague the plan for the stuff that was bought, for the go ahead, so went and picked up the few missing things thay are needed. When she got back to the office she continued putting it all together.

After lunch Kim had a donut chat with a great colleague and it was so much fun. They spoke about how strange COVID has been and a bunch of other stuff, it was great!

After that call, Kim had a meeting with her colleague and then finished up making the things and then sent a few emails before heading home!

Evening

When Kim got home, she marinated some chicken for tomorrow’s dinner and then also made some food for today.

We had chicken breasts with a sun-dried tomato, mustard, garlic, ginger and sour cream sauce.

We had this alongside mushrooms and some other vegetables.

We ate this and spent the rest of the evening watching TV, playing games and just relaxing.

Tomorrow is a day off for Canada Day, so we did plan to go out and maybe go to a park, but the weather is expected to be quite bad tomorrow so we probably won’t do much.
