Place 72 – Day 573: Vancouver, BC – More Courier Woes!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had some tickets and other work to get done in the morning, including some admin for someone going on parental leave.

Once he did that he had his Norwegian lesson, which seems to go better and better each time!

Curtis was meant to have a meeting in the afternoon but that got cancelled, so Curtis got a lot of tickets done which was great! A very productive day.

Kim’s Day

Kim had a day full of meetings today! She started off with some admin and getting things set up for the next few weeks before joining and presenting in the weekly meeting.

She then facilitated a project meeting, it was so productive and interesting. Kim then joined a call to discuss potentially working with a vendor in regards to training. That meeting also went well and Kim is excited to see what the next steps are.

In the afternoon Kim hosted a procurement meeting to discuss how the process should work and then Kim joined a meeting to go over how an interview went during the day.

She finished the day by calling FedEx to get an update in regards to a delivery. It wasn’t great news and Kim found out the delivery would be attempted again the following day.

Kim then did a little more admin and ticked a few things off of her list.

Evening

Kim popped out to get a few things from the shop for dinner and we had a Santa Fe salad for dinner with spicy chicken which was excellent!

We played games and watched TV for the rest of the evening. The days seem so long now that daylight savings is in effect.

Place 72 – Day 567: Vancouver, BC – Watch Your Face!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis got ready and went right to the office to get a laptop setup for someone and their equipment setup.

All went well, except for when he tried to get a monitor from the monitor arm and it moved and hit him quite hard in the face…It was quite painful, actually, but no real damage done.

Curtis got everything setup and ready to send out and also called up the courier to make sure that the pickup was setup correctly as the last time he did it, he did it wrong and had to had deliver it.

Once he was done at the office, Curtis walked home with a stop off at Starbucks to get us both a coffee.

When he got home, Curtis was informed of an offboard so had to do some admin for that as well as a few tickets that came in.

The afternoon was much of the same and then at the end of it, Curtis did some more Norwegian homework.

Kim’s Day

Kim spent the morning scheduling and organising meetings. Someone once said that scheduling is like playing Tetris and Kim really agrees!

In the middle of the morning Kim had a catch up with a teammate and they discussed a guide that they had been working on together. They also went over a few other projects that have been going on and are coming up. She then placed an order for some things before calling her colleague and writing a LinkedIn post with their help and input.

In the afternoon Kim attended a few meetings. The first was a marketing meeting, the second was a catch up with a colleague. She then went into some training for the applicant tracking system and had a chat in regards to how some things work.

Kim then had a call with her colleague to go over the guide. She went to test it by following along and realised it didn’t match up with what she experienced. So they had to redo a lot of the guide to include both versions of what might happen. It was a lot of glaring at a screen and tweaking formatting to make it perfect, but they got there in the end!

Evening

Kim made a pasta bake for dinner which was a spur of the moment thing using leftovers but it was delicious!

We took the recycling down and grabbed the boxes for moving from the car so we could start putting stuff we aren’t using into them as we go.

We then went out for a walk after we did this as Kim fancied one.

We then just relaxed for the rest of the evening.

Place 72 – Day 471: Vancouver, BC – Day Off Together

Kim woke up about an hour before Curtis as she had some things to do for work quickly.

She got a courier booked to pickup and deliver a laptop to someone and also did a few other things.

Once Curtis woke up, we had some pancakes for breakfast and watched a bit of TV.

Once we got ready for the day, we did a bit of research and work regarding our PR and work permits and then we went for a walk!

We got a coffee and walked to the beach and had a wander around there for a while, until it began to get dark. We did get to see the start beautiful sunset though!

We got back home and played some games for a bit and then went out to get dinner.

We got a poké bowl each from close by as we saw it yesterday and thought it sounded nice! Kim got jerk chicken and Curtis got grilled salmon.

The food was just ok, with not much flavour and Kim’s had a LOT of kale.

We are our food and then watched Love Actually, as you should during the holiday!

Place 72 – Day 413: Vancouver, BC – The Season Begins!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis got things ready to head to the office this morning and then took the walk down.

Once he got there, he got a laptop from the storage room and started setting that up.

Curtis also had to do some project work which involved some testing, seeing if certain websites could be accessed in different ways.

Curtis did that and then continued setting up the laptop.

He had a meeting to discuss his personal learning plan and how he wishes to develop within the next 6 months to a year.

Curtis finished up the laptop setup and booked a courier to pick it up.

After that, Curtis had a call with someone to try and fix something for them, but after 1.5 hours of trying, they couldn’t get it working, which was frustrating!

Curtis did a few more things and eventually walked home around 16:00. Long, busy, tiring day!

Kim’s Day

Kim has got a phone interview for tomorrow! She received an email to set up a 20-30 minute chat with a recruiter for one of the positions that she is really excited about. Once she set up the time Kim took a deeper look into the company and is now more excited than she was previously. It will be a similar role that she is used to but with a few more responsibilities, but its always good to learn more!

In the afternoon Kim did a bit of housework and had a lazier day. She will probably apply to a few jobs while Curtis is at hockey tonight.

The Season Begins!

Curtis got back home and we watched a bit of TV, then Kim made some chicken pasta for dinner.

We ate that and then Curtis hopped in the car and drove up to the hockey rink for his first game of the season!

We will update you on the game tomorrow, as it’s a fairly late one.

Kim did some job searching whilst Curtis was at hockey and she did a few other things around the apartment.

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had a whole day of doing onboards and laptop setups.

Curtis created some accounts in the morning and then he walked down to the office.

Once he got to the office, he got 2 laptops, 2 monitors, 2 keyboards, 2 mice and 2 headsets to get ready for the new hires.

He spent a long time getting the laptops setup and packaged up and ready to ship out.

He then had to wait for a courier to arrive, which took a couple of hours, but he did some other work whilst he waited.

Eventually, the courier arrived and then he was able to head home and finish up working there, as well as chat with Kim about her fun day, as you’ll see below.

Kim’s Day (In 1st Person Today…Exciting!)

As you can imagine from the title and from reading Curtis’s blog, today was not a good day for me! I had an idea that I would lose my job today…And I did. I was laid off and not fired, so there is no need to panic.

I got into the office and finished packing up my desk after saying a quick hello to my manager. After this I made sure all the little tasks from last week and yesterday were done, re-saved a receipt for my credit card and sent out a laptop to someone. I then worked on writing up a handover list for my colleague, outlining a few things that I was expecting to be delivered, an update on a few contacts and links to logs, documents and other things I had been working on. I finished that all just before my 10am meeting.

I walked into the meeting room and said ‘its okay, I know whats going on, I understand and its okay’. I felt very George walking Lenny to look at the bunnies, but I was both George and Lenny, it was very strange. I was certain of what was going to happen, but still a little hopeful that it wouldn’t. Once I sat down it was confirmed that I was let go. They went over a few things together and then Kims manager handed over to a teammate who was going to explain everything in a bit more detail. Just before she did I sent the handover email to my colleague and sent Curtis a quick message to let him know what had happened.

My teammate then went over everything in a little more detail. I then collected my things and headed home.

Once I was home I facetimed my parents which was just what I needed. I was able to laugh and cry about it all and rationalise a plan for the next few days and weeks. After this I called my sister and did much of the same. We had a great chat and it was lovely to see her face.

I quickly updated my LinkedIn and then tried to go over my CV, but that didn’t last long. Instead I started tidying up the apartment, doing laundry, finishing unpacking from the trip and bagging up my IT equipment to take back to the office at some point, but not today! That took me ages because every now and again I would get a message from someone within the company and I would respond and have a little cry! I have received a fair few messages, that is a LOT of crying time.

While I had come to terms with the idea of losing my job over the past day it was still so upsetting to have it happen. I loved that job, I would brag to anyone who would listen about how amazing the people are and how interesting, diverse and fun my role specifically was. It is clear that I was in the right job for me, the love and support I have received has been incredible! And I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone I worked with and who made the last 16 months so incredible! Finding a new job will be a challenge and I can only hope that I get to work with people half as incredible as you all!

Thank you for all the opportunities, challenges and memories, it was a wonderful experience!

As I have said many times times today – it’s okay, I’m okay and it’ll be okay!

I know I’m not the only person to experience this, especially during the current pandemic, but I wanted to express my feelings on this platform.

Tomorrow I will start my job hunt. I have already been given a few companies to check out and a few specific roles to look into, so I am off to a great start. Let’s see where this new adventure and opportunity will take me!

Evening

Once we had a bit of a chat about Kim’s unfortunate news, we hopped in the car and drove it to the garage for its appointment tomorrow.

We then walked back home which was a nice thing to do after such a stressful day.

After our 33 minute walk, the elevators were taking forever in our building and you cannot take the stairs, so there was a lot of waiting there.

We got hungry, so we ordered McDonald’s as Kim had a hard day and we couldn’t really be bothered to cook.

When the food arrived, Curtis went downstairs to get it and there was a large queue again for the elevators.

Curtis had to wait a long time as just one elevator was working, but he got upstairs eventually.

We ate our food and watched TV for the remainder of the evening.

What a day, huh?
