Place 72 – Day 936: Vancouver, BC – People Back At The Office, Again!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis was up at 07:00 to get ready and walk down to the office. There were 2 people coming back to the office (there are quite a few restrictions in place, but they wanted to come back before the office fully opens again) so Curtis had to be there to help them setup at their desks and he also had some other things to do.

Once he helped these people with their desks, he found and sent out some equipment for a couple of people who requested some. That took a bit of a time and then he moved onto the next thing.

He had to test some things out in the boardroom so he did that and sent off a reply to the people asking.

There were some issues with a piece of networking equipment, too, so he took a look at that with some help from a colleague.

After he did that, he confugured a couple of laptops and then he had a bit of lunch, followed by starting the office cleanup, which entailed taking a lot of monitor arms off the desks. This took the rest of the day, but he did meet someone at the office to swap a laptop for them as they were having issues with their current one.

Curtis left around 16:30 and walked home. He had a busy, long, day but a productive one!

Kim’s Day

Kim had a busy day but it was interesting! She started with two interviews and the check ins just after and then at midday she went into the weekly recruitment meeting.

For the afternoon Kim was in back to back meetings, she had a couple of smaller meetings around planning and communication. She then joined the weekly managers meeting for updates and collaboration.

For the final part of the day Kim was able to get a little more admin done before having a quick project check in with one of her team members. She then popped out to pick up a laptop. It should have been a 30 minute round trip but took an hour and a half due to a price update and a system bug. Kim had to stand in the store and call support to get it mostly sorted out.

Later in the evening Kim worked on a job description.

Evening

We had some chicken wraps for dinner with a side salad and then Kim had to do a little more work.

Once Kim finished working, we went for a walk and then watched a bit of TV.

Place 72 – Day 176: Vancouver, BC – Kim Needs Glasses!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis was up and into the office early to get the boardroom and conference room setup for a whole company meeting. Curtis just had to check that everything worked, do some testing and get a few other things setup.

The meeting went on for 1.5 hours and then Curtis had another meeting right after and then after that he had yet another meeting!

After all his meetings, Curtis got some tickets done and then had some lunch.

After lunch, there was just a couple of hours left of the day so he used them wisely and got a few more things completed.

Curtis left the office and walked home.

Kim’s Day

In the morning Kim worked on one of the new offices floor plan and spent some time moving people around to sort a room booking for someone.

At lunch Kim went to the opticians and had an eye test done. It went well but Kim will need reading glasses so soon she will be on the hunt for a pair of glasses! She also received a referral to go to the doctors in regards to the migraine she had back in September. Kim also had her eyes dilated for the exam and that was a wild ride!

As Kim couldn’t see all that much when she got back to the office she had some lunch and then cut up some fruit, carefully.

Kim spent some of the afternoon rebooking the meeting room from the morning as the booking is for March and not February.

The rest of the afternoon Kim worked on making a report for the catering requested since she started. This meant Kim went back through emails and messages and logged a the requests.

Evening

The evening was pretty eventless for Curtis. He just played some games and watched some videos.

The class Kim went to was good fun, she was only able to get one of the two moves but it was a great challenge!

Kim had an hours break before the open pole session so she relaxed in the reception area.

It’s often hit or miss with open pole and Kim, sometimes she manages a few good things and other times it is a total wipe out! Tonight’s training was brilliant.

She trained in a move from months ago and was even able to incorporate it into a combo. She was also able to practise moves she wants to use in her routine, which was brilliant!

Place 72 – Day 207: Vancouver, BC – Lunchtime, Gametime

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had a busy start to the morning, having to help a whole company (that work within his company) setup their respective office boardrooms for a company wide meeting.

After that, Curtis spent the morning doing ticket work, and a small amount of project work, hoping to finish up a project soon.

Curtis’ team had a meeting at 13:00, which was to agree on projects to take on for the upcoming 2 weeks.

This meeting went on for about 1 hour and 15 minutes, which Curtis had lunch after.

After lunch, Curtis was able to get his project finished and start another project, which was a big success!

Kim’s Day

Kim got in and started on the shopping orders for the other two offices right away. She put all the orders together but ran out of time before her meeting room booking to actually place the orders. She really didn’t want to rush them and make a mistake.

Kim collected everything she needed for starting the table decorations and took them up to the meeting rooms on the 25th floor.

As she was spray painting Kim decided to go up to the roof so she can work in a meeting room wity a door that can open and allow fresh air in.She had the idea of using parts of the beautiful bouquet of flowers that Curtis got her for her birthday. She dried out the leaves and some petals and spray painted them sparkly or silver. This will look so pretty on the night scattered around the food.

She then cleaned up and headed back downstairs in time to start setting up for the lunchtime game. Kim moved some furniture and set out the pens and answer sheets for the game. Kim’s colleagues grabbed the pizza while she was setting up too!

The game this quarter was Guess the Song – Festive Addition.

It was great fun to watch people try to figure out what was playing and then the debates during the answers were great! Kim would not accept George Michael, it had to be Wham, but she was not insistent on the exclamation mark. She totally made the rules up as she went! It ended in a 3 way tie so there was then a few quick fire rounds until we came to one winning team! It was great fun!

Kim got back to her desk and then went through all the other offices orders and triple checked them before she completed them.

After this Kim sent 2 packages vis FedEx, which is great as she was worrying she was running out of time.

As she had bought some extra stuff for the table centrepieces yesterday, Kim wanted to do a quick improvement of the snowman she has made. It is now much cuter and better looking!

Kim then finalised the shop for the Vancouver office. It won’t be arriving until the afternoon on the Monday as Kim has tried a different shop!

As she has to order some extra things that the usual place is unlikely to stock.

Kim then sent and replied to a few emails before heading home!

Late Hockey Game

Curtis got home and sorted his hockey kit out and chucked that in the car.

Kim got home and we had some food. Curtis made himself some (way too spicy) Piri-Piri chicken with rice and Kim wanted to have a potato instead, so she did just that.

We watched some TV and then left the house around 21:00 to go to Curtis’ hockey game.

We will update you on how the hockey game went tomorrow!

Place 72 – Day 166: Vancouver, BC – Sniffles

Curtis’ Day

Curtis had a plan to look at an issue for someone in the morning, which is what he did.

He then continued to do some project work from yesterday.

After his daily team meeting, Curtis had a bit more time to do project work and then had to go into the boardroom to test everything in there and setup for the big company wide meeting that was taking place in there.

The test went went and so did the meeting with just a few hiccups in general and none on the Vancouver office side, which was excellent!

After the meeting, Curtis finally had lunch, did some tickets and finally finished off some project work.

Curtis got a beer and drank that whilst completing an off board and then walked home.

Kim’s Day

When Kim got in she started on a few emails before heading into a meeting to talk about catering options for a couple of upcoming functions. It was great to have clarification and fresh eyes!

The rest of the day was much of the same, Kim reconciled payments around other ad hoc tasks like getting the post, trying to return an item for someone and sending outgoing mail.
Kim then had a food delivery and ran that over to the meeting.

It must have been good because 1 by 1 everyone came and told Kim what an amazing meal it was!

Kim then spent about an hour and a half trying to send things via FedEx, it took 3 attempts online and 2 phone calls to get it sorted.

After this Kim continued with the reconciliation a d took a quick break to set up the friday afternoon drinks. Then after that Kim sent out an invite and some information in regards to some diwali celebrations.

Sniffles

We got back home and caught up on some YouTube videos before Kim left for training.

Kim’s Training

Kim’s training this evening went so well. She did 2 run throughs of her routine and was able to add a move back in after falling over in practice doing in.

Kim did not want to have a mental block for the move so she threw it in during the second run and stuck it which is amazing!

Kim also watched 2 other peoples routines and they were spectacular!

Curtis was playing games whilst Kim was out and was feeling bad for himself…He seems to have gotten more of a cold even though he thought he was getting better! He started to get a runny nose and more of a sore throat, unfortunately.

When Kim got back home, we watched a bit more TV and went to bed. We need to be up at a good time tomorrow!

Place 72 – Day 145: Vancouver, BC – Pokémon Quiz!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis was busy right from the get go today. He had some challenging tickets, which meant he had to think and investigate, which was great, and he also had a few things planned.

He had to help with a meeting, ensuring the polycom was setup and ready to go, but his colleague did that which was helpful! Then, he sat in on the meeting to be there in case he was needed, but thankfully he was not.

Once the meeting was done, it was time to have some lunch and then get right back to work.

Curtis started setting up a laptop for someone who needed a replacement and he did some tickets whilst doing that, too.

Curtis got some further project work done and that meant he is ready for next week’s project kick off!

Curtis had some drinks with everyone in the office and had some really good conversations, mostly with some of the new employees, so it was good to chat with them.

Curtis left quite late as he got carried away with the conversation, leaving around 17:20.

Curtis waited for Kim for a while and then we walked home together.

Kim’s Day

The first thing Kim sorted was stealing more furniture. The marketing team needs more space to hold their swag and Kim found a smaller cupboard that she could move all of her stuff into, freeing up a larger cupboard. She emptied the small cupboard, moved it to the other side of the building and moved her stuff into it and bow the cupboard is empty for marketing to use.

After the clean out of all of the meeting rooms yesterday Kim had a lot of random stuff to filter through and put away so she spent a bit of time going through that before putting it back in the stationary cupboard.

Then the pizzas arrived which reminded Kim that she had to finish her presentation. So she quickly finished the formatting before setting up the pizzas and getting ready for her presentation.

As Kim is hosting the monthly social talks going forward she thought it best for her to actually do one of the talks. She decided to do her talk on Aerial Acrobatics and it went really well. We had a few technical difficulties during other peoples talks but the first time hosting wasn’t so bad.

After the pizza had been cleared away Kim did a quick check of the meeting rooms and made sure that all of the chairs in each of the meeting rooms matched. She also hid all the older and broken chairs in one room.

After this Kim ran out to pick up some wine and a pack of beer for the Friday afternoon drinks. Then she had the great idea of doing Pokémon themed cocktails so Kim cut up some mango and some lime ready for later.

Kim then caught up on some admin and emails before setting up for the quiz. She set up the bottled drinks, got glasses ready and IT had already sorted the projector. As Kim was making the cocktails people started walking in ready for the quiz. It was quite a good turn out, about 20 people came for the quiz and another 5 – 10 came to watch and chat.

The quiz went amazingly and people loved the cocktails too. After the quiz Kim sorted out some letters and set herself up for next week by going through her emails again and setting up reminders.

Cheeky Chinese!

We both had a craving for Chinese food, so we ordered that and had to wait for 45 minutes for that to arrive. During this time, Curtis watched hockey and Kim watched some videos.

We got the dinner right at the perfect time and time flew by as we ate and watched some YouTube videos.

We ended up watching some more Vikings and actually slept quite early for a Friday. We feel very tired!

Place 72 – Day 117: Vancouver, BC – Lunchtime ‘Taco Friday’

Curtis’ Day

Curtis was busy right from 08:50-16:10 today.

Right from the get go, Curtis had some things planned and ready to get done.

He had to complete the cloning he did yesterday, which worked perfectly overnight.

He then helped someone having issues with Outlook on their new laptop. After this, he did some IT security work and then had to test the boardroom for a big meeting to ensure it was working and setup as required.

Once Curtis was done with that, he helped someone start a complicated purchase process and then began an onboarding!

A new person starts Tuesday, so Curtis had to get everything sorted out for them. (Monday is a day off in Canada)

Curtis took about 1.5 hours to setup their accounts and information, all whilst completing tickets and answering questions.

Taco Friday

Taco Friday is a ‘thing’ that people do in Scandinavia, for some reason, and we aren’t opposed!

We also do it from time to time, but this time it was for lunch.

We were lazy and couldn’t be bothered to make lunch, so we went do to Tacofino to have some tacos.

Kim got 2 chicken tacos and Curtis got 2 beef tacos. These were incredible. Spicy yet sweet yet meaty. Amazing!

We weren’t there long and then we had to walk back to our respective offices, but it was really nice to catch up briefly.

Curtis’ Afternoon

Curtis’ afternoon was just as busy as hi morning.

Along with doing tickets, Curtis had to setup a new laptop for the new person starting, as well as setup their desk and ensure it works.

After that, Curtis helped someone setup a couple of programs on their laptop and then he was able to get the fnal thing he needed to get done before having a drink with some people in the office.

It’s been a busy couple of days but he’s enjoyed it!

Kim’s Day

Kim spent a lot of her morning changing travel plans for 2 people. For one Kim had to change the 1 day trip for a visitor to the Ontario office. She also had to change a new starters return trip back to the UK, moving his flight to a week early and with a stop off in the states.
Kim also spent some time looking into the catering of large meetings going on the week after next.
Curtis and Kim had planned to meet up for lunch so she headed out to meet him.
Kim spent more time in the afternoon on the travel changes and finally started to get things approved and changed, which was great.
As we have a new starter in our UK office who is visiting at the moment Kim arranged to sort his business cards out while he is here. She added the info and sent it across for approval.
Kim then placed the order for the weekly shop to be delivered on the Tuesday for next week as it is a bank holiday on Monday!
As it is Friday Kim then went out to pick up the wine and beer for the Friday afternoon drinks.
When she got back it was time to set up the drinks and snacks for people to enjoy. Kim joined for a while and had a nice chat to 2 people over from the UK office before realising that she hadn’t sent across the business cards to be printed so she ran back to sort that. She then went back to join for a while longer before heading home!

Lazy Pizza Evening

We got home and Curtis played games for about two hours, some how, whilst Kim lay on the bed relaxing.

We finally decided to do something, so we watched a YouTube video and then had a frozen pizza for dinner as we had a big lunch, so we didn’t need anything bigger.

Place 72 – Day 81: Vancouver, BC – Hockey Kit!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis’ day was very quiet!

Curtis had some admin to do when he got to the office and then he completed a laptop setup for a laptop he started configuring yesterday.

Once that was done, Curtis had a meeting but it was interupted by needing to help people in the boardroom with the meeting they were having.

Curtis completed his meeting after helping people and then did a bit of project work.

Curtis got another laptop setup and then it was the end of the day!

Curtis received his hockey equipment at work so had to walk that home.

Kim’s Day

Today in the course they focused on Airway Management. At the beginning they went through patient positioning, this covered how you would manoeuvre a person from standing to lying on their back. From lying on their stomach to their back and finally from lying on their back to lying in the recovery position. Then there was a quiz to go over everything that had been taught so far.

The rest of the morning covered airway and breathing on a conscious person. In this they covered both partial and complete airway blockages and how to dislodge a complete blockage through hitting the patients back, using the abdomonal thrusts and chest thrusts. In this section they also covered CPR and the use of an AED / defibrillator. With each new skill there was a demonstration and then everyone got to practise.

In the afternoon everyone covered airway and breathing for an unresponsive patient. There were also assessments with scenarios where people would be called upon to preform CPR on a dummy alone while being watched by the instructor. The instructor said Kim did well!

Hockey Kit

Curtis got home and tried on his hockey kit. It all fit perfectly, which was excellent!

He got all of the equipment together and went down to the garage to put it there.

Kim did a bit of homework and studying for her first aid and Curtis made sloppy joe’s for dinner.

We watched some videos and then Kim did some more research.

We finished the evening with a bit of TV and then went to sleep.

Place 72 – Day 49: Vancouver, BC – Food Truck Friday & Ice Cream

Curtis’ Day

Curtis received an email stating that there would be a large meeting happening, so he had to ensure the boardroom worked and connected with all other boardrooms.

Curtis got that setup and then sat in the meeting to ensure it all goes smoothly. The meeting was 2 hours long and Curtis didn’t understand most of it.

After the meeting, it was lunch time and Curtis met with Kim to go to a food truck.

The food trucks are all lined up along Robson Street just next to Robson Square.

We looked at what was on offer and decided to go with a hoisin chicken wrap (the wrap was a green onion pancake!).

The food was really good and certainly filled us up!

We each went our seperate ways and Curtis was still busy when he got back to work.

Curtis sorted a new Mac for someone and gave them it and had to deal with a couple of tickets, too.

At 14:30, Curtis’ office had a big ice cream selection for everyone to try as a first day of summer celebration.

Curtis went right back to work at 14:45 and got a few final things done…it was a busy afternoon which was rare!

At 16:15, Curtis grabbed a beer and chatted with some colleagues as well as two friends of theirs from the UK.

Kim’s Day

Kim’s day was very busy but with lots of little things.

Unfortunately there were no dogs in the office today and it was Kim’s colleagues last day!

When Kim got in she had some time set aside for a catch up with a colleague who is heading out on holiday for a few weeks. They had a chat about all the training for the HR side of things to ensure Kim would be comfortable while she was away.

A little while later Kim got a call from the vendor that she missed yesterday and had a lovely introduction.

It was then lunchtime so Kim headed out to meet Curtis.

When Kim got back in the office she went through making the new business cards. It took a bit of trail and error and help from other people but Kim eventually managed to send out the drafts to people for them to review.

Kim then popped out to grab a few things for Friday afternoon drinks. The first stop was to a drug store, like Boots, to get some rainbow coloured sweets as this week we celebrated Pride month. Then it was to the liquor shop to pick up a few things.

Kim then attempted to get everything finished for the week with the final hour of work left in the day. Most things she achieved, there was one that was pushed to Monday so it was a very successful week!

It was then time to grab a drink and have a chat with some colleagues!

Toaster Attempt 2

We met in our usual spot and walked home together.

We got home and had to take out all of our rubbish and recycling.

Once we took that out, we relaxed for a while and then Kim went to get a new toaster as ours was rubbish, so we are sending it back.

We got our new toaster setup and then watched some TV.

We got a bit peckish but not hungry enough for a proper dinner, so we decided on some toast.

We ate our toast and then had some whiskey whilst catching up on our TV we have to watch.

Place 72 – Day 32: Vancouver,BC – Costco & More Kitchen Stuff

Curtis’ Day

Curtis woke up with a nose bleed, so not the best start to the day!

Luckily, he still got to the office on time.

Curtis began by configuring a Mac for a user getting a replacement and then had to go and look at the lounge area of the office and remove redundant equipment as well as plan what will be done with the area from an audio/visual standpoint.

Curtis had a quick 1 to 1 to check how he was going on and then he had to check multiple meeting rooms to check their visual equipment was working correctly and he gained a few future projects from that!

After lunch, Curtis completed a few tickets and then had to get some laptops and test them for donating.

Kim’s Day

Kim got into work and started by setting up some of the fruit.

When she settled down at her desk, Kim decided to rearrange her desk and organise some of the computers files. During this, a request came in for breakfast catering so Kim and colleague headed across to the fancy supermarket across the road to buy many pastries.

After a little while, Kim then headed into a meeting to finish off the rest of the orientation.

Then suddenly it was lunch time! Kim joined the rest of her team up on the rooftop terrace to enjoy some sun and have some lunch. It was lovely to just sit and have a chat with people.

After lunch, Kim headed to Costco with 3 colleagues to get some breakfast items and snacks for the Hackathon thats happening from Wednesday to Friday.

The team took 2 taxis back because so much stuff had been bought!

When they got back, Kim was met by a few other employees who helped take the many bags and boxes upstairs. Once they were upstairs, Kim helped empty and organise all of the food, including helping move a small fridge from one part of the office to another to store all of the cheese!

The unpacking room roughly an hour which left them with an hour left in the day so Kim managed to get some time to go through her emails and get a bit more practice with the systems she will be using.

Screws

We had to collect some screws from the guy we bought our TV from as the base requires certain screws. He was in Chinatown so we walked there together after work.

We got the screws and then briefly went to Costco to find out about the card and how to get one.

More Kitchen Stuff

We walked back home and dropped off our stuff and then went back out to get some more things for the kitchen. We tried a dollar store but that wasn’t great so we went to homesense and got stuff there.

We came back home and Kim made fajitas for dinner, which were incredible!

New Blinds

Our landlord came by in the evening to provide us with some new blinds as well as speak to us about anything we wanted fixing. He will be coming by sometime next week to put the new blinds up, which is great!

Swim

In the late evening, Kim went for a relaxing swim in the pool we have in our building. Kim really enjoys having a pool so she can swim when she wants!

We watched some TV and headed to bed. We have no plans for tomorrow evening, which we are very excited for.

Place 72 – Day 31: Vancouver,BC – Kim’s First day & Finally Wifi!

Curtis’ Day

Curtis walked to work this morning! The weather was pretty nice, even a bit warm. He got to see a beautiful view from the bridge.

Curtis got to work and saw a message about an issue in the boardroom, so went to sort that out.

Curtis had a colleague from the Winnipeg office visiting to show him some stuff.

Curtis got to see a lot today about how Apple Mac laptops are setup, so he went all through that.

As well as going through that, he looked at onboarding and offboarding people.

Curtis got some ginger chicken from the Vietnamese place opposite the road. It was a lot of food!

It was all of a sudden 17:00 and time to go home.

Kim’s Day

Kim got ready in the morning and then headed to Downtown for her first day at work. It was such a beautiful, sunny morning.

When Kim got to work she had a little tour and got a few things set up before heading into a couple of orientation meetings. The orientation went on until midday where Kim met with a few members of the team and learned more about her role and new company.

One thing that was cool was the kitchen! There are various types of coffee machines, including one with a milk foamer. This is very exciting as Kim will now be able to make amazing hot chocolates and coffees in the winter. There is also a massive soft drink fridge too!

At midday, Kim and the rest of the team went out for lunch at Zefferellie’s, a lovely Italian place just around the corner. Kim had a spaghetti with meat sauce, but only the half portion as the meals where huge! This was a really nice way for Kim to get to know the team in a relaxed environment.

When they went back, some of the team headed into a meeting to organise the company’s meeting rooms for the second half of the week as there will be an optional company wide hackathon, which is very exciting! This will give Kim a chance at getting to know lots of people in the company and really help out, a great way to start a new job!

After this meeting Kim continued on more of the orientation for another hour or so before heading back to get desk to do some reading and get a better understanding of the systems and apps.

Just before the end of the day Kim got a cool swag pack of a mug, backpack and laptop case!

Walking Home Together

We met after work and walked home together. Kim told Curtis about her first day and Curtis told Kim about what he did today.

The walk didn’t seem to take long at all and we even got more beautiful photos!

Wifi!

Once we got home, the guy from Shaw cable was there too, right at the perfect time!

He came in and very quickly set up the wifi and we were good to go. When we first tested, when nothing else was using the network, we got 320mbps download, which is excellent!

We then used this to setup the TV and xbox, as well as our Mac & phones.

We are now all connected and ready to go.

Walk

We went for a walk after the Shaw guy left, partially to look in shops for some things but also just to walk. The weather was still nice, so why not?

Grilled Cheese

We came back home as we got hungry and we just made some grilled cheese sandwiches and had some ketchup crisps on the side.

Curtis played some games in the evening and we watched some TV together, too.

It’s nice to have things set up!
