Place 74 – Day 1: San Francisco,CA 🇺🇸 – A Bumpy Flight, Living In A Garage & A Brewery

Train To The Airport

We had no breakfast left this morning as we ate it for a snack last night, so we passed on breakfast and just got showered and ready to go.

We were mostly packed, just the last few things to add, and then we left the apartment and walked to the train station.

We bought our tickets for the train and waited the 10 minutes for it to arrive.

We sat on the train for about 30 minutes and then arrived at the airport.

Seattle > San Francisco

We checked our bag when we got to the airport and went through security.

We were hungry, so were on the hunt for some food, but we had to get to our gate which was in the N section, so we had to ride the plane train briefly.

We got a breakfast bagel each and sat and waited for our plane to board. We were sitting right at the back, so were last on.

The flight was pretty bumpy, but it was just 1 hour 40 minutes, so it was no problem, really.

We listened to podcasts on the plane and we also got a free drink & biscuit.

San Francisco

We landed and walked down to the baggage claim, where our bag already was!

We then saw a sign regarding Uber, which said we had to get it from the top of the parking garage, so we walked there.

Once we got there, we were told what to select on Uber and actually got a small discount for doing it from the right place, which is quite cool!

We got a BMW 5 series, which was cool, and sat in the car for 33 minutes to get to where we are staying.

Living In A Garage

We arrived at our AirBnb and got ourselves in. This is in a garage in someone’s house, but it’s pretty nice! The main thing we have noticed about San Francisco so far is that it is obviously much warmer than Seattle, which is great!

We can actually see the Golden Gate bridge when we walk down the road a little, which is awesome.

Dinner

We went to a brewery for dinner as it is a 5 minute walk from our apartment.

The food was actually great and the beer was good, too!

We had the mac and cheese sharer, sweet potato fries and grilled broccoli.

The broccoli stole the show but the mac and cheese wasn’t as good as we had hoped.

Place 71 – Day 5: Portland, OR – Terrific Lunch

Finally, Some Sleep

We both slept great last night, so much so that we had 10 hours sleep and woke up a bit later.

Our flight out of Portland wasn’t until 19:00, so we had to find something to do for the day.

We sat and ate breakfast then we got ready, packed and checked out of our room.

We looked for some things to do, but we only had 3-4 hours so we couldn’t go too far.

Eventually, we bit the bullet and went to watch a film.

Isn’t It Romantic

We took the short walk to the cinema and bought our tickets for a film called isn’t it romantic.

Isn’t It Romantic

Our Rating:- 5.5/10

We hadn’t seen much about this film, so it was more just to kill time.

It was alright, but nothing to write about (literally!).

Amazing Lunch

We still had about an hour to kill before getting the train, so we went for some lunch.

We heard about a place nearby which is meant to be fantastic, but when we got there it was busy and they only had the bar area for food, which was a little cramped.

Luckily, they told us about another place just down the road which is where we went.

This place was called Cheryl’s and they had a lot of options.

Curtis ate an eggs benedict and Kim had a croque madam.

This food came with a side of a cheesy/oniony/potato combination, which tasted just like a cheese and onion pasty. Weirdly, this was topped with cornflakes.

The food was great and the staff were great also. We couldn’t have had a better last day in Portland!

Airport

We got a train to the airport which took about 40 minutes, and it was a quiet train, too.

We got to the airport and used the machine to check in. This printed something saying we would get our seat assigned at the gate, which worried us a little.

We were flying with Delta, so we went to their desk to ask about this, but they said that is normal for the cheap ticket we have purchased.

We sat and relaxed by the gate for an hour or two and then just before boarding we got our seats which were, luckily, next to each other.

Flight #1 – Portland > Seattle

Our flight was easy and fast once we got on it.

We were sat right at the back and had some good leg room.

Airport Antics

We landed in Seattle and had to take the plane train to the S gates.

We got to the correct gate and realised there was nothing nearby, so we went back on the train to B gates so we could grab a drink from Starbucks.

We got our drink and went back to S so we could go to our gate.

We got to our gate and then it said it was now in an A gate, so we got back onto the train and got to the A gate.

As soon as we got comfortable, we realisedthe gate has moved again, so back on the train we went and this time to a B gate.

We got to the B gate and finally boarded the flight!

Flight #2 – Seattle > Victoria

We realised we had comfort plus seats, which was great! We got to board first, had a charging port at our chairs, more leg room and a comfortable chair.

We had a fun time listening to a couple of passengers debate behind us, which helped pass the time!

Victoria

We landed in Victoria and once getting through immigration, we got the transfer bus we booked to the city. Our driver was very funny, cracking multiple jokes and funny lines.

We walked from the bus stop to a hotel which Linda kindly booked for us to stay at for a few nights!

We got in and then went to get a bit of McDonald’s as we were feeling a little hungry.

We got back to the room, exhausted, and went to bed.

Place 49 – Day 379: Auckland – Biometrics & Back in The Hostel Life

Waking at 05:45, we all hopped in the car with Kim’s family’s bags and drove to the airport. There was no traffic, but we did need to stop for some fuel on the way.

We got to the airport and it was pretty busy! We walked all the way to the correct check in location and left Tom & Maggie there. It was pretty emotional for Kim!

We deove back and we were very tired. We had a late checkout from the hotel, so we didn’t have to leave until 12:00.

We slept when we got back until around 09:45. Curtis then had a coffee and we got packed and did a bit of admin.

We eventually checked out at 12:00 and moved all of our baggage to the car. We walked to a coffee shop in the centre of town, got a ham and cheese croissant each and a coffee for breakfast.

We left the coffee shop and Kim did a bit of shopping around the city centre. Once Kim had finished, we walked up to the Visa Application Centre for Curtis to get his biometrics for his visa completed. We turned up 15 minutes early but were seen anyway and had it completed just after the original planned time, which was a result.

Once we finished there, we went to get Curtis’ hair cut. We went to his usual place and were told it would be 20 minutes. We waited for 45 and were then told it’s another 30 minutes and the were 2 people ahead. We didn’t want to wait any longer so we left and went back to the hotel.

We picked up the car and drove to our next accommodation.

We are officially back in hostel life! At least for the moment. We got to the place and no-one was there to check us in. We called and they said we cannot check in until 16:00. We spoke with them and asked which room we are in and we were allowed in. We went to the room and it was disgusting with bugs everywhere and also a lot of mould, so we asked to move to another room we had seen which looks nicer.

Once we were in the new room, we waited to get our key at 16:00 and then had fun with them regarding payment…we went to the shop to get some drinks as we were very thirsty!

Once we got back, we moved all of our bags in and Curtis started to feel a bit unwell so we relaxed for a bit until he felt better.

We went out for a late dinner at a cheap Italian place which was OK but nothing special.

What was special was the sky after our dinner during our walk around!

We got back and did more admin as well as catch up on some TV.

It’s weird, and certainly not as nice, to be in a hostel again, even if it is a private room (shared bathroom)!

Place 49 – Day 373: Auckland – Kim’s Parents Have Arrived

.After waking around 07:15, we set off at 08:00 to get down to the airport. Before we left, Curtis saw that the city had a strip of cloud through it, which looked incredible!

Before we arrived, we stopped at the supermarket and grabbed an orange juice for Kim’s parents, ahead of their arrival.

Once we got to the airport, we parked up and waited for around 30 minutes until Kim’s parents came through the doors.

We said hello and headed out towards the car. As we went to do so, the heavens opened and so Kim pulled the car up for everyone to get in whilst Curtis paid for the parking.

We waited in the queue to leave for a while due to the barrier machine being broken. We were eventually let through without even showing our tickets.

We drove back to our apartment whilst chatting away.

Once we arrived back, we stopped briefly to deposit bags and then went out to get breakfast. We drove to Honey Cafe but it was closed, so we went to So French instead, which was excellent as ever! We saw the owner again and introduced him to Kim’s parents.

We each had a coffee and they were only selling crepes so we had one of those each.

Once we ate, drank and relaxed, we walked back to the car (via the pie shop).

We got back home and watched some vidoes on YouTube whilst relaxing with a coffee.

Curtis watched hockey at 13:30 and, whilst watching, was contacted by someone wanting to buy the Xbox so Curtis agreed and got that sold, having it picked up around 15:00!

Everyone started to get tired so people had naps and then Kim made some delcious sweet chilli beef with noodles for dinner.

Post dinner, we sat and watched the film ‘The Owner’ based on McDonald’s which was a really good film.

We all went to bed fairly early, but we needed it!

Tomorrow is Christmas day here, so we’re looking forward to relaxing, eating and drinking.

Also, a thank you to everyone for viewing our blog posts over the years. We are now on 13000 views and there is so much more to come so stay tuned over the next few months and years!

Place 49 – Day 266: Auckland – Auckland Zoo & Family Goodbyes

Kim headed off to work this morning and Curtis got up and got ready for the day.

At 10:30, Curtis got picked up by his family to get the day started.

They went to The Bunglo Cafe which we went to on our first ever day in Auckland! The food wasn’t actually that great unfortunately, but the coffee was great. Curtis had an eggs Benedict.

They were all incredibly stuff so they waddled to the car and went to the zoo!

The zoo was very cheap at just $24 which was a good price.

The zoo wasn’t amazing, but the cheetahs were nice and close as were the monkeys, which were great to see.

They stopped for a drink and then went to the Tasmanian Devils where they were feeding and the keepers were there to tell everyone a lot of information about them.

After, the tigers were up on the agenda. There was just one tiger which was asleep but then woke up and ate some food.

After the zoo, everyone went back to our place and chilled out until Kim got back from work.

We then all went near the airport where we all got a meal before the family headed to the airport.

Curtis’ family went to the airport and we all said our goodbyes, with a few tears.

We drove home and went to Danielle & Josh’s house to drop something off and then we went home.

Kim spoke with her mum and then we slept! Curtis is back to working tomorrow but is working from home.

We had an amazing time with the family!

Place 49 – Day 248: Auckland – Family!

Curtis’ Day;

Curtis had plans to go to two clients this morning, so he did just that.

Curtis had a few things to do before heading out and just before leaving a large influx of emails came in.

Curtis left and popped to the ice hockey shop to see of they could repair his hockey skates, but there was nothing they could do, which was unfortunate!

Curtis left after a quick visit to the shop and went to the first client. Not too much was needed here, but it was good for Curtis to touch base and check all was good. He then left and went to the other client which was a 30 minute drive.

Curtis spent about an hour on site and helped a couple of people and then got back to the office and had lunch. During lunch, Curtis looked online to see what the damage would be for a new pair of skates!

Luckily, someone that coaches Curtis’ team had a spare pair of used, high-end skates which were his size! Curtis organised to meet him in the evening to try them on to ensure they fit.

Curtis left work a bit early to contend with the traffic due to a major accident. Curtis got home around the time he normally would after leaving an hour early!

Both of us;

Kim got home and we had some dinner. We had leftover sausage and mash, which was delicious.

Kim then went for dessert with Tabitha at the chocolate cafe.

Chocolate_Cafe_Takapuna

Kim met with Tabitha as Tabitha is going away for a few weeks and she is sad to not see her for a bit.

Once Kim got back, we went to the ice rink in Avondale to test out the skates. The seemed to fit perfectly and Curtis was even able to test them on the ice briefly!

We left there and headed for the airport.

We got a couple of drinks from the supermarket and then waited at the airport for Curtis’ family to arrive!

We surprised them at the airport and drove Max & Evie (Curtis’ siblings) to the airport whilst Lisa & Gareth took the free bus.

We met them back at the hotel and helped them with their bags and had a quick chat before leaving them to sleep and driving home ourselves.

It will be so fun to spend time with them and then we are both of from Friday, too for some fun activities!
