Place 49 – Day 190: Auckland – Friend From England!

We had a bit of a lay in and then Kim made breakfast for us and Nicola.

We sat and chatted for a bit over breakfast and then got ready to go out.

We just needed to go to the shop to get stuff for the week, so we headed there and got that. We were very good and didn’t get a coffee from a coffee shop, though we did get an iced mocha and iced chocolate from the supermarket!

We left the supermarket and unpacked when we got home. Pretty much right after arriving home, we left the house again and drove to Curtis’ work where we were parking.

Our friend Tom is here in Auckland for work so we wanted to see him!

We met Tom at his hotel and it was great to see him again after so long!

We walked to the Sweatshop brewery (we like it there!) and had a drink.

We got a taster set each. Curtis got: Lager, APA & ‘brewers choice’ and Kim got IPA, Lager & ‘brewers choice’. The brewers choice was an ‘oatmeal stout’ which is very similar to Guinness. A very coffee flavour and aroma and Curtis really liked that one.

Kim wasn’t a fan of the brewers choice so Curtis drank hers. Tom got a crushed apple cider which was also excellent!

We sat and chatted for over an hour about all the things we have done and about what Tom has done since we have seen him.

We left the bar and walked for 20 minutes before getting to a place to eat!

We ate Asian fusion and it was incredible! Unfortunately, we were unable to get any photos as it was too dark, but we had;

  • Chinese pork
  • Pork and black truffle dumplings
  • Fried spicy chicken dumplings
  • Bang bang chilli chicken
  • Rice
  • Pork belly steamed buns
  • Picked cucumber

The food was absolutely phenomenal!

We walked Tom back to his hotel and then we walked back to the car and drove home.

We’re now going to watch some TV then head to bed.

Curtis has to fly to Christchurch tomorrow, which was meant to be at 08:30 but has (at the moment) been delayed to 11:50, so a bit of a sleep in for him!

This time last year!

Place 49 – Day 189: Auckland – Capitola Watches

We woke up and Kim went to get some breakfast for the supermarket. We had eggs, bacon, pancakes and beans.

Kim’s colleague dropped off a package for us around late morning. This package was exciting as it is our first brand ambassadorship!

We’ve partnered with Capitola Watches! We both got our own watch and also have a discount code that you can use at http://www.capitolawatches.com! When checking out, use the code: MRANDMRSHALE for 10% off!

We’re very excited to have a partnership and the watches are beautiful with a great quality.

Check out photos on our social media!

We watched TV for most of the day, then we had to drive to Avondale rink for Curtis’ hockey game!

Curtis’ team were pumped to play due to watching the USA/CAN game last night, and didn’t it show!

Curtis’ team took an early 2-1 lead, with Curtis being on the ice for both and assisting on the second (by hitting it out the air, by the way!).

After that, Curtis’ team held it very well and came out with the 4-1 win!

We left the rink and drove home, getting a pizza on the way!

We got home and watched far too many episodes of ‘The Bridge’ and then it was bedtime!

More awesome stuff happens tomorrow!

Place 49 – Day 188: Auckland – Ice Hockey Classic 2018

Curtis was at home for the morning whilst Kim was at work.

Curtis went to the post office to see if a package we have been waiting for was there, but it was not.

Curtis got back home and called the courier who told us where it was, so we will be getting that tomorrow!

Kim came home at 13:10 and we had some cheesy pesto pasta for lunch.

Once that was done, we got an Uber down to the arena, where our tickets were waiting for us.

We had to wait for a little bit and then we went inside! At 15:30, there was the West Auckland Admirals vs Botany Swarm game on as a precursor to the main event. For that game, we were able to sit wherever we wanted, so had awesome seats!

Just before they game started, we got given our Canada jerseys, too, which we got for volunteering!

Once that game was finished, we had to leave the arena for an hour before we could reenter for the main event. We used this break as a chance to get some McDonald’s!

By the time we got back, we were able to get to our seats. Again, due to volunteering, we were able to get complimentary tickets! We were sat right where the players came out, but the view wasn’t amazing.

We had the player introductions and the national anthems, sung by the anthem singer of the New York Rangers!

Then it was game on! It started pretty lighthearted but then got more serious as the game went on. There was also a hit or two to the head and almost a fight! A very entertaining game and an 8-5 Canada win with Peter Holland scoring 3 and most likely assisting the rest!

In the 2nd intermission, Curtis’ hockey team all met up for a quick drink before going back to watch the rest of the game. In the first intermission, there were kids playing hockey and it was awesome and cute!

Post game, we spoke with Peter Holland again and he remembered us! He also signed Kim’s jersey!

We then helped dismantle the rink! Once we were eventually allowed, we donned oue hard hats and gloves and got to work.

We had to take all of the glass out of the boards and onto pallets. The glass is very heavy so it was about 4 people per sheet. As well as that, the ice was being melted so it was getting increasingly slippery!

We helped until about 12:45 and then left the arena and got an uber home.

We had an awesome day! 2 hockey games, speaking with hockey players again and helping dismantle a hockey rink.

We get to do some awesome stuff!

Place 49 – Day 187: Auckland – Blog Improvements

Curtis’ Day;

Curtis took Kim to work this morning. Once he got back, he had some breakfast and relaxed.

Curtis was waiting on information for when the skating session is on. As Curtis volunteered with building the rink, he gets to be one of the first people to skate on the ice at Spark Arena!

Unfortunately, this had to be moved and is now tomorrow at 12:00-13:00, just before the first hockey game of the evening.

Therefore Curtis had no plans for the day and the weather was rubbish so it was a nothing day!

Curtis decided to get some blog admin completed.

Curtis added new header photos to the blog (the random photo you see when you go onto the blog) and they look awesome! Look out for some new ones in there!

Other than that, Curtis didn’t really do anything at all, which was nice but weirdly tiring!

Both of us;

Kim got home and we put on a wash. Neither of us were hungry, so we played a bit of fortnite before going to the shop to get some bread rolls and cheese for dinner.

We were having chicken burgers again, which we didn’t eat until around 21:00.

We watched one TV show together then when Nicola came home, Kim watched love island with her.

We finished the night watching another episode of TV and then got some more sleep.

This awesome week hasn’t finished yet!

Place 49 – Day 186: Auckland – Meeting NHL Players!

Curtis’ Day;

Curtis’ Day was productive today! Curtis relaxed for an hour or so this morning whilst having breakfast and then emptied the dishwasher.

Once that was done, he showered and then had to call the tax department of the government here in New Zealand to get some questions answered.

Once that was done, Curtis drove to Mitre 10 to get the incorrect lightbulb swapped out (and finally got the right one!). On the way back, Curtis got fuel and then went to the supermarket for bread and milk.

Curtis got back home and relaxed for a bit and had some noodles for lunch.

Curtis then ironed and brought the dry laundry up from the garage. Once he did that, he sorted out the cabling and added an extension cable to our room to make it a bit more manageable!

Curtis then went to pick Kim up from work and brought her home.

Both of us;

We got home, Kim got ready and then we drove to the city.

We were going to a bar in the city called Brew on Quay.

At this bar, thanks to our volunteering, we were able to have a drink or two with the players from the USA & Canada teams!

First of all, we were treated to a haka, which was awesome especially inside the pub.. The sound echoed even more.

Once that was done, we mingled. Unfortunately, Curtis was unsure of who any of the players were, other than two former Maple Leafs players!

Curtis approached one and started a conversation, which he then got Kim to join in on also. It was awesome for Curtis to speak with Peter Holland and we both thought he was an incredibly nice guy! We spoke for a while about why we’re in NZ, the fact Curtis is a Leafs fan and how he got into hockey and our travels! After speaking with Peter, we spoke with Byron Froese, another former Leafs player! That was a brief conversation but he was also very kind and welcoming! Shortly after, those two players and their girlfriends/wives left we followed suit. It was very busy and crowded and we weren’t sure who was who so we left to get food.

We went to the Korean place Kim had been to recently and got some chicken and potato waffles!

We finished up and headed home.

What an awesome day! Curtis got to meet NHL players that he’d cheered for on TV a few years ago and just had a normal, down to earth chat with them.

It was incredible.

More awesome stuff should be happening tomorrow and Friday too!

Place 49 – Day 185: Auckland – Dramatic TV

Curtis’ Day;

Curtis has no work at all this week, but also wasn’t volunteering today either, so it was a relaxation day! Kim went to work and Curtis woke up at 08:45 (for some reason!).

Curtis had breakfast and watched his usual movie YouTube videos, showered and turn played games all day!

Both of us;

Kim got home and we are leftover chili con carne and watched our new favourite TV show, The Bridge!

The episode was incredibly dramatic and awesome!

Nicola got home so Kim watched love island with her for a bit.

Kim then showered and we finished the night watching the series 1 finale of The Bridge. Such a good show!

Something awesome happens tomorrow! You should check the blog then too!

Place 49 – Day 184: Auckland – Building an Ice Rink!

Curtis’ Day;

Curtis woke up at 04:00 to get ready to get to Spark Arena for 05:30.

There is a charity USA vs Canada ice hockey game happening there, so the ice needs to be built within the arena! Curtis received an offer to volunteer to help with this process and he accepted the challenge!

Curtis was told that it started at 06:00 and to be there 30 minutes before, so he did.

Someone else that he knew also arrived then, but they then later found out it had been changed to 08:00 and they hadn’t been informed!

Curtis waited in his car until it was time to go in.

Once they got in, it was running a little behind schedule so all volunteers were taken to the green room of the arena to wait. Curtis had a coffee and waited.

Curtis and the team were eventually called out to start doing some work around 10:00.

There are metal sheets that go around the edge of the rink so the first job was to grab those and put them where required.

Once that was done, 9 large rolls of tarp were required to be rolled out and taped together, which is what Curtis and the team did for most of the morning.

A delivery arrived with lots of North American confectionary, which everyone took good care of!

Once that tarp was laid and correct, all volunteers had to get the piping that freezes the ice down and lay it (carefully!) across the tarp. There were 3 large pallets of these and they got them all done!

Once this was done they had a little break followed by helping with moving the boards and glass into the arena. Once that was done, it was home time! Curtis was incredibly tired, but happy with what has been achieved, though it doesn’t look like much at the moment!

The yellow looking parts are the pipes!

Once Curtis got home he chilled out and contemplated sleeping!

Both of us;

Kim got home and we had chilli for dinner. Kim then watched Love Island with Nicola.

Kim then went out to a restaurant called ‘The Elephant Wrestler’ with a friend and had dessert!

Kim got back home and it was bed time. Kim had a shower and then slept.

Curtis doesn’t have work or volunteering tomorrow, so it’s a free day! Wednesday there is no volunteering but an awesome event as well as Thursday and the (2!) games Friday! A Busy week but an incredible experience!
