Place 16 – Day 18: Bergen – Rabarbrakake

Last night we watched a film with the family. The film was called ‘Bølgen’ (The Wave). This was about a mountain that collapses into the fjord. It was a pretty good film and was in Norwegian, so that helped us with our Norwegian skills!

Curtis didn’t sleep too well last night as he had quite a bad headache and couldn’t breathe too well, so we will make sure tonight that we open the window whilst sleeping as it gets quite warm and stuffy.

We had a lovely breakfast again, Curtis had the same and Kim had cheese on toast but also had natural yogurt.

Curtis was feeling better after breakfast, so we headed off to do some more wood splitting!

The machine kept stopping again, but we changed the cable it was using and it seemed to improve so we got a good amount done and we can see our progress with the wall of wood we are building.

We did a little bit of weeding after Silje and Vetle (mother and son) came back from their time away and we met them for the first time.

Vetle helped us with the weeding and probably did a better job than we would!

We had a Norwegian dinner consisting of;

  • Salted Lamb
  • Potatoes
  • Swede
  • Broccoli
  • Sausages
  • Lamb Sausages
  • Gravy

The dinner was absolutely lovely!

For dessert, we had homemade ‘rabarbrakake’ (Rhubarb cake [crumble]) which was divine and we had that with vanilla ice cream.

After dinner, we relaxed for a bit and then played some Monopoly Deal with the children here, which was a lot of fun!

Place 16 – Day 18: How Much Wood Can An English Couple Split?

We woke at 10am for a special breakfast prepared by Simen this morning, but unfortunately he was unwell, so we had some toast with brunost (Brown Cheese), juice and coffee, of course.

We then headed outside to do some splitting of wood! The weather was nice this morning too, so that was an added bonus!

We were shown how to use the wood splitter and then we began splitting! Some were a little bit more difficult, so that meant we had to use the axe to cut them, which was obviously great fun!

We stopped for some lunch, a lovely sandwich with some beautiful buns. After lunch, it was raining a little so we had to stop with wood splitting as the rain was affecting our machine.

We swapped to doing some weeding, which is definitely more fun than you would think as there was big ones that we could take out with bigger tools, which was fun!

After work, we took a nice walk down to the shop, which goes past some sheep and some awesome Christmas trees!

Place 16 – Day 17: Bergen – I’m On A Boat!

We moved to another island in Bergen today called Askøy.

We had to catch the bus at 13:23 so had to leave the house around 13 to get to the bus stop. We had to do the same as before, getting a bus to one place and then a connecting bus to Bergen centre.

We arrived in Bergen and then decided to get a small lunch. We found ‘Los Tacos’ and halved a burrito, which was beautiful! This left us with just enough time to get to the port to catch our boat! Our host was collecting us at the port so we know where to go! He collected us and we got onto the boat and decided to stand at the top of the boat, outside, which was lovely as it was a really nice day!

We were only on the boat for about 15 minutes and then had to get a bus on the other side to get to the house. We got to the house and looked around and we must say, it’s beautiful! We have a lovely bathroom that looks like a bathroom in a hotel and we are sleeping in an awesome old wagon/caravan, which is awesome and actually a lot more spacious than you would think!

We got settled and then had some Tacos because it’s Taco Friday, of course!

We sat and had a chat with our host about our travels and his and then we cleaned up and were invited out to play basketball with Simen, one of the children here. It was great to get out and get some fresh air and have a run around, though we are pretty sure we are very unfit!

Place 16 – Day 16: Bergen – Row, Row, Row Your Boat (Badly)

We woke up a little later today, but didn’t have much to do. We just had 30 minutes of work to do before we could relax.

We decided that we wanted to go out on the row boat!

We walked around the corner to the small harbour and noticed that the boat was full of water! We spent a bit of time emptying the water and once that was done, we set sail!

Armed with just 2 paddles, we rowed and rowed but not much happened..We found ourselves stuck in the middle of two islands and, even when paddling, not much happened! Kim did see some jellyfish though, so that’s a bonus!

We panicked a little bit and then we just rowed for as long as we could and eventually found our way back to the shore. We had wanted to get to another island, but there was the incredibly strong wind sending us off course and also a boat in the way. Neither of these helped with our goal. We decided to turn back and got back safely.

We went for a short walk after this and now we’ve just finished packing for moving to the next HelpX place tomorrow and Kim is making Spaghetti Bolognese!

Place 16 – Day 15: Bergen – GoPro Pros & Sun

Our day off plans had changed as Espen had to work, so we changed our plans and decided to go to a hiking route we find the other day. To get to this place, we had to walk towards the shop and across the bridge.

The weather today was beautiful and way hotter than it seemed! Don’t get many days like that in Bergen!

We walked across the bridge and got to the area that had a sign saying there was a walking track in 3km. So, we walked the way it said to walk, but it turned out that it was just houses. We decided to walk the other way and there was nothing up there either, just a small farm with chickens and horses.

We walked back and we used the GoPro to film some stuff, which Kim edited together for a video which is now on our Facebook page, so make sure you check that out!

We came back and met the new HelpX guests that are here and then did a little bit of cleaning.

Kim is going to cook some food for the guests later and for us! Pesto pasta with chicken!

Place 16 – Day 14: Bergen – Digging Around Obstacles & A Woody Stroll

We finally had some good enough weather today to continue with the hot tub area. We’ve pretty much completed our water run off area and we just had to do a little bit more digging to get it to the correct depth. Low and behold, as it’s been since we started it, there were more obstacles! 4 massive rocks and a lot of metal. We managed to get 2 rocks out, but 2 were just too tough for us, and we,re going to revisit it on Thursday.

We finished up there and had some lunch! Kim made a wonderful egg, ham & cheese was delicious!

We decided that we would go for a walk after lunch, so we headed out down the hill and saw some excellent views!

We found an area of woodland and wandered around. It was pretty boggy in some places, but luckily, unlike the other day, we didn’t get a lot of mud everywhere!

We took some photos and videos around the area as we were surrounded by mountains, lakes and woodland. It was absolutely beautiful!

To get back to the road, we had to pass an abandoned caravan. We were certainly hoping it was abandoned and noone jumped out of it! Thankfully, that didn’t happen.

Once we got back, Curtis helped the host with pulling some cables through to the correct place whilst Kim made an incredibly delicious paprika-infused Mac & Cheese! It was georgious! Just look at that cheese!

Tomorrow, we have some plans with Espen as we have our day off, and then we have thursday to work and the on Friday we move on!

Exciting times.

Place 16 – Day 13: Bergen – Cycling & Being Incredibly Welcoming

We cycled to the shop again today, luckily there was some good weather! We decided that we’re going to film our cycle with the GoPro attached to the front of one of the bikes. This didn’t work too well as it was very wobbly, so we scrapped that and we’ll be using it in the future to get some cool photos or videos!

We had to meet the AirBnB guest today from the bus stop. He was very nice and we showed him around the house and then headed out with him to the swimming area (technically just the sea!) to show him where to walk/hike around the area. We also had some conversations with him, which is nice to do when you’re not really talking to anyone throughout the day!

We’re needing to start getting prepared for moving to our next place here in the Bergen area of Norway, as we leave here on Friday!

We’ve got 2 more ‘HelpXers’ coming on Thursday, so we’ll need to get things prepared for them as well. We are hoping to be off on Wednesday, so we’re hoping to do something fun then!

Ha det!
