Place 72 – Day 17: Vancouver,BC – Reverse Shopping & Detective Pikachu

Great Britain Ice Hockey

Curtis was up at 07:00 to watch Great Britain play against France with the winner staying up in the top division.

Great Britain fell behind 3-0 but turned it around, got into overtime and ended up winning 4-3 and are staying in the top division!

Reverse Shopping

We got up and ready after relaxing for a bit and then we walked, in the slight rain, to the train station to get to Metropolis.

We started by doing some reverse shopping, in which we returned a couple of pairs of incorrectly ordered shoes.

Terrible Lunch

We were both very hungry so we looked around for somewhere to eat. We found The American Cheesesteak Co. Where they were selling a beef wrap for $1.99! That soubded like an amazing price, so we got one each.

This was where it got interesting…After a few bites, we noticed there were no beef chunks, but instead, beef salami! We asked about this, as did many other customers, and they said that is beef and that is what they sell…we were expecting chunks of beef, but it was cheap.

We ate quickly and moved on.

Homesense

We walked around homesense, looking at items we could potentionally get for our apartment once we move in.

We were in here for a while, but then wanted a coffee so we went to get one.

Coffee

We visited Blenz Coffee, which we find hit and miss, and Curtis’ coffee wasn’t great. It was just a cappucino, but it was WAY too hot and didn’t even taste good, which was a shame.

Detective Pikachu

We watched Detective Pikachu in a cinema which had vibrating seats and some, more expensive, seats even moved with the film!

We went into the film with low expectations, but we actually really enjoyed it. It seemed to keep getting better and the plot twists were excellent! The CGI was questionable but the general animation was fantastic.

Coffee Crisp

We came home and weren’t really hungry for dinner, so instead we had a coffee crisp each, which are coffee flavoured chocolate bars. These were quite nice, but we weren’t hungry enough to have a full meal.

We watched TV for a few hours and then got some sleep.

Place 72 – Day 16: Vancouver,BC – Central Park

Central Park

We wanted to have a walk today and it was a nice day, so it made perfect sense!

We took about a 40 minute walk down to Central Park, which is a large park here in Burnaby.

The park was incredibly peaceful, even though the was quite a few people enjoying it.

We came across a nice lake which also had some ducklings in.

The park was beautiful and calming. We walked around it for a while, watching all the squirrels and lookimg at all the tall trees.

We got to a certain point in the park where we noticed we wanted to have a coffee, so we stopped to find a Vietnamese cafe to get Vietnamese coffee.

Coffee

We got to a Vietnamese restaurant and they said they wouldn’t serve us JUST coffee, so we hastily left and decided Starbucks would be easier, which it wasn’t.

We went to 2 Starbucks but neither had seats. We couldn’t be bothered to keep looking, so we got our iced lattes and walked around instead.

Train

We had thought we would walk home, but it was an hour, so we got the train home instead.

We watched a bit of TV and then made dinner, which was the same as yesterday, followed by more TV.

Place 72 – Day 15: Vancouver,BC – Much Needed Relax

No Breakfast Requires Shopping

We woke up a bit later than we have been and then realised that we had nothing for breakfast, so we needed to go shopping.

We got ready and then walked for 20 minutes to get to the supermarket.

We got breakfast cereal and a few snacks but got distracted my Starbucks on our way out, so grabbed a coffee too.

We got back home and had some breakfast whilst Curtis watched the Great Britain ice hockey game.

Laundry

We then needed to do laundry and where we are staying doesn’t have laundry, so we went to the laundromat opposite us and got it washed there.

Unfortunately, we had no cash so we had to get some money out, meaning walking basically all the way back to where we went to the supermarket earlier.

We got back to the laundromat and put the wash on and then went back home and relaxed for the 30 minutes it was washing for.

We went back and got our laundry, put it in the dryer and waited the 45 minutes for that to finish…a highly exhilarating day!

Once that finished we brought it home and then made some dinner.

We had a similar thing to yesterday, but we had General Tsao sauce instead, which was a nice change.

Different TV

We have watched all of the latest episodes of our usual shows so had to watch some different shows.

We watched an episode of Gordon Ramsay and some different YouTube videos and then we watched the Fyre Festival documentary, which was interesting.

We followed that up by watching episode one of Chernobyl which was interesting for us as we have been there!

We then hit the hay, with no plans tomorrow.

Place 72 – Day 14: Vancouver,BC – Many Interviews & Night Snacks

Rushed Start

We woke up around 08:30 for Kim to have a phone interview at 09:00.

The interview didn’t last too long, but after it we realised we didn’t have much time to get ready!

We had breakfast and then both of us showered and got dressed into interview clothes.

We rushed down to the train station and got to where we needed to be with just a few minutes to spare!

Curtis’ Interview

Curtis is very interested in this role, so was looking forward to the interview.

He had to go to the 12th floor of a very nice building and the office was just as nice!

Curtis felt the interview went well and still has big hopes for the role.

Kim’s Interview

Whilst Curtis was having his interview, Kim realised her shoes were very uncomfortable and a bit painful, so she found some cheap alternatives that don’t hurt her feet so much.

Kim had her interview about 1.75 hours after Curtis’ finished, so we went to get some lunch before she went there.

We just grabbed a Subway and relaxed there for a bit and then we made our way to the building Kim was interviewing in, which was also a nice building.

Curtis grabbed a coffee whilst Kim had her interview.

Kim’s interview also went well and she is very interested also…and a lovely office! Neither of the offices are far from each other, either, which is nice.

Same Dinner Again

We got home and relaxed a bit and then for dinner we just had the same as the last few nights. The plan was to eat cheap and we have a lot of the pork, vegetables and rice left anyway.

Night Time Snacks

We got quite hungry around 22:00 so we walked just 4 minutes down the road to a place called off the grid which is a waffle shop.

Curtis got a strawberry milkshake, which came with a waffle stuck in it and Kim got a chocolate ice cream and brownie cup with waffle, too.

Kim also got a hot chocolate to take home.

Place 72 – Day 13: Vancouver,BC – Long Video Interview, Shoe Shopping & A Laundromat

Video Interview

We slept in a little bit this morning and then we had to get up as Kim had a video interview.

Kim had a video interview so she did that whilst Curtis relaxed.

The interview was 45 minutes long and Kim felt that it went well.

Shoe Shopping

We had breakfast after Kim’s interview and then went out to do some shoe shopping.

Kim had some shoes but they aren’t quite up to scratch for an interview, so we had a look in a few shops.

Eventually, we found some for Kim which are perfect, as well as a shirt she can use for the interview as well as work.

We headed back home, surprisingly tired.

A Laundromat

We needed to iron our shirts for tomorrow as we both have an in person interview but were we are staying doesn’t have an iron, so we had to get it done at a laundromat.

We went to one just across from our apartment, and it was expensive. It was $4 an item, but we needed them so had to pay for them.

We waited for them to call but after 4 hours they hadn’t called, so we went to check. It turns out that they had tried to call, but they were unable to reach us.

We got our things back and we walked just across the road to our apartment and had dinner. We had the same as yesterday which was still delicious.

We watched some TV and got everything ready for our interviews tomorrow.

Place 72 – Day 12: Vancouver,BC – More Interviews, Recruiter Meeting & Suit Purchasing

A Phone Interview

Kim had another phone interview this morning! It sounds like an interesting role and she has actually been offered an in person interview!

Recruiter Chat

Just after Kim was done with her interview, Curtis had a quick call with an IT Recruiter, who seemed very keen to get Curtis a good role. So much so that he wanted to meet Curtis for a coffee. As we were both going to be in town, he invited us both to meet him at a coffee shop and Curtis had a chat with him regarding work as well as other things. We finished the chat after 30 minutes or so and we left to do some shopping.

Suit Shopping

We spent around 5/6 hours today just doing some suit shopping! We looked around many places downtown and then Curtis found a suit he liked in H&M but they didn’t have the right size trousers for the jacket, so the store called another store and said they had them there, so they held them and we got on the train to go there. We got to the train all the way there and found out they had the wrong trousers on hold and they didn’t have any to match! After we looked around for another while, we went back to H&M and got a slightly darker blue suit.We stopped at Walmart for dinner items and then went home.

Dinner & Dog Walk

We were so hungry when we got home, so we cooked right away. We had some pork with vegetables and rice with a sweet chilli sauce. Simple and delicious. We did very little for the rest of the evening, but we did take the dog we are currently living with out for a walk, just as it started to rain!

Place 72 – Day 11: Vancouver,BC – We Have An Apartment!

Bank, Again

We made our way, in the rain, to the bank. We had to visit again as Kim’s account wasn’t working yesterday so they had to try again today.

We were able to get some Starbucks coffee from the bank, too!

They eventually got Kim’s account sorted, after a couple of hours, and then we went into the city.

Apartment Viewing…Or Not?

We got all the way into the city and then were planning our route to the first apartment viewing.

We started to head there, but Kim then received a phone call saying we could go and see another apartment right now. After some confusion, this turned out to be an apartment we had seen yesterday…Actually the exact apartment we wanted! They were actually offering us to rent the apartment, so we cancelled all other viewings and raced right over there on the train.

We Have An Apartment

We got over to the place and met the manager of the building. He went through a few things, got us to sign the paperwork and we paid the deposit. We chatted with him for a while and we are confirmed to move in around the 1st June, which is incredibly exciting.

The apartment is exactly what we wanted and is in a perfect location for if we get jobs downtown.

We now need to focus on getting work, and we both have interviews lined up, so we’re hopeful to get some soon!

Celebratory McDonald’s

We thought we better get some food as we were hungry, so we went to McDonald’s to get some food, having not eaten since breakfast. Kim had a chicken wrap and Curtis went for a fancy angus burger.

Back Home & We Can Now Relax

We got home and were able to get comfortable and just relax. Having an apartment sorted means we have a lot of spare time, though we do have a few things to get sorted still, other than jobs.

We did very little for the rest of the day, just relaxing, did a little job searching but for the most part, nothing, which was a much different day than we thought we were going to have, as we had 3 apartment viewings booked.
